I have a rental modem from Comcast and want to buy and get rid of the rental costs. Anyone have a suggestion on best brand and model of modeum/router combination?

I use LinkSys by Cisco at both homes and have never had a problem.

I got a Netgear at Best Buy. They will install it also.

Just an FYI.. IF you go to Comcast telephone you need to use their modem.
The good news is that it has a built in wireless modem. But it is only rented.

If not, then Wal-Mart or Best-Buy would be two good places to look.

I had the same issue. Called comcast and the person on the phone recommended going to Best Buy to check out modems. I did and found the "Motorola Surf Board" model..I did get a better price on Amazon though. Had it quite a while and it works great. You have to work with Comcast to get it on line though. They were very helpful..

When we had Comcast set-up phone, internet and TV the technician said my modem/router would not work! Do I need to get the phone through a wall outlet instead of their box?

I have comcast phone w/modem and am using my own linkysys router. Used it in a previous residence in NJ, too. Just plug router into the back of the modem, and set up according to the linksys instructions.

I'm thinking they are stuck with renting the modem. If Comcast will help you hook up your own modem, that surprises me. They would be losing the modem rental fee each month. If you want more than one computer with internet access, then you have to buy your own router. We have wireless, so we didn't have wires running from my computer to the other two PCs in the house.

We don't have Comcast in Montgomery, but after we move down, Comcast may be our only choice in Rio Grande. If someone can confirm that Comcast will help you connect your own modem, please post back here so we all can save some $$$.

If you want to install a modem in the Comcast network - whether it is yours or theirs - you have to contact Comcast so that they can verify the connection. When I was renting from Comcast, I would go down every six months or so and get a replacement. I always had to contact Comcast so they could finalize the setup. It is not a plug and play setup. They need to know you are a Comcast customer.

We have it several years, travel with it all the time and use it in our home and boat.

Flat rate $60 a month unlimited

How has the speed been with it?

speed is fine, it's 4G, it may be just a bit slower than cable but a very immeasurable bit.

I have high speed cable in my office that is about the same speed.

It is secure also.

We have Century Link for home phone and internet. With the internet we have 10mbps speed with no moden. I plug the router directly into the jack on the wall. They call it "to the curb" setup. Our home phone has unlimited long distance, caller ID and call block and both together are $59.99 per month. I have never had any downtime in the one year we've been with Century Link.

Great to know. Thanks again. . . always learning something on TOTV! :024: Good idea too about getting updated modems. We had the same modem for years here and the technician had a newer one on his truck. Helped with the speed too.

I totally dislike Comcast - I have a MyFi unit from Verizon - About the size of a cell phone-We take it with when we travel - Anywhere Verizon has a signal it works great - Also use it at my home in southern FL - My Fi is great in TV - They have a tower right off 466A -Good luck with Comcast - Hope you have lots of patience and a big bottle of red wine -
