GlaxoSmithKline was fined 3 billion dollars for deceptive sales practices, and bribery.

Actually thanks for starting this.....I have been trying to find out the HOW DO WE PAY FOR THIS THING and it seems that it is very much BACKLOADED and there is great concern over that. Seems like in a few years is when the !@#$ hits the fan. Very complicated but I offer this from 2010 in the NY Times..

"“The C.B.O. process has now been so thoroughly gamed that it’s useless,” writes Megan McArdle of the Atlantic. She’s concerned about how many of the costs have been pushed to the tail end of the budgeting period, and that the excise tax on so-called gold-plated insurance plans won’t take effect until 2018:

The proposed changes increase spending dramatically, most heavily concentrated in the out-years. The gross cost of the bill has risen from $875 billion to $940 billion over ten years–but almost $40 billion of that comes in 2019. The net cost has increased even more dramatically, from $624 billion to $794 billion. That’s because the excise tax has been so badly weakened. This is of dual concern: it’s a financing risk, but it also means that the one provision which had a genuine shot at “bending the cost curve” in the broader health care market has at this point, basically been gutted. Moreover, it’s hard not to believe that the reason it has been moved to 2018 is that no one really thinks it’s ever going to take effect. It’s one thing to have a period of adjustment. But a tax that takes effect in eight years is a tax so unpopular that it has little realistic chance of being allowed to stand.

And, she asks, when you borrow from yourself, have you really saved money? “A disturbingly high percentage of the revenues still come from insurance premiums for other programs. About $53 billion of the net deficit reduction is from Social Security taxes collected on the wages people will now be getting in lieu of health care benefits. But since those contributions raise the amount Social Security will eventually have to pay out, the Republicans convincingly argue that this is not true ‘deficit reduction’; it’s just deficit shifting. Ditto the premiums for the new long-term care insurance.”

“Obamacare’s worst tax hike is the imposition of a new 3.9 percent Medicare payroll tax on capital gains and other investments,” adds the economist Larry Kudlow at National Review Online. “What will this do? It will depress the economy, depress wages, and depress jobs. Washington doesn’t understand that you can’t create jobs without new healthy businesses.”

Here’s a more surprising critic: Gov. Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, a Democrat, who sent a letter to two of his state’s members of Congress, Senator Bob Corker and Representative Bart Gordon, explaining the burden the reform bill would put on Tennessee’s coffers:

http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/19/checking-the-math-on-health-care/

Note the concern on a state level so before we begin to chastize these governors for playing politics only, perhaps we should take another look.
And that concern is from a Democrat

Also this is from 2010 but to my knowledge no changes have been made to this bill.

This gives a lot of pause to me anyway

This is from the same as I posted before...

"– The Sustainable Growth Rate imposes automatic cuts in Medicare payment rates to doctors.

For several years, fearing a revolt by doctors — and seniors — Congress has suspended those cuts. The original draft of the House health care bill included a permanent “doc fix.” But that ballooned deficits, so Democrats dropped it, even though everyone knows Congress isn’t going to slash doctors’ rates. The C.B.O. has estimated a “doc fix” would cost $247 billion over 10 years.

– Student loans are included
Doctors’ payments are excluded from the health bill, but major student loan program changes are included? Yep. The reconciliation bill will end student loan subsidies to lenders. The C.B.O. says this will save $19.4 billion over the first decade, accounting for virtually all of the $19.8 billion in deficit reduction from the health care reconciliation bill.

Peter Suderman of Reason has another: “The score for the Senate bill includes $72 billion in revenues generated by the CLASS act, a federally-backed disability insurance program. But that $72 billion is just premium revenue that will eventually have to be used to pay out benefits. The score counts that revenue anyway, despite the fact that, according to the C.B.O., it would probably add to the deficit in the long term.”

“As expected, Democrats have maintained the strategy of delaying the major spending provisions until 2014 to create the appearance that the bill is cheaper over the C.B.O.’s ten year budget window, from 2010 through 2019,” adds Philip Klein of the American Spectator. “The bill spends $17 billion in the first four years, while the remaining $923 billion, or 98 percent, is spent in the next six years.

The last two posts are why for the last year or so I have been sarcastically saying about this bill that it is funded with a lot of "ifs, ands, and maybes"

And also the reason Obama had to pay off folks to get their votes because a responsible congressman (if they exist) would have trouble putting our country into this kind of situation.

Future does not look good

"The simple fact is that nobody knows what this bill will cost. That’s due in part to the guarantee that history will intervene, in messy and unpredictable ways, over the next decade. And it is due in part to the fallibility of the lawyers and staffers who wrote it, and of the accountants who scored it. And it is due, in no small part, to the baroque lengths to which Congressional Democrats have gone in the name of obscurity."

I probably will get a curt reply for posting this but it seems to me some people spend in inordinate amount of time posting and posting and searching for every little tidbit in favor or against their President or his administration.

It is good to be involved. Nothing wrong with that but The Villages is full of so many great things to be doing - get out and do them!

I had a full day today. Started out with some volunteer time at the Food Pantry, went grocery shopping, did errands at Lake Sumter Landing, played golf at Stirrup Cup, and still had time for a little computer time.

I imagine replies will come in criticizing me for making these comments but life is too short not to be fully enjoyed. Get out and have fun. You are not going to change anyone's mind with political comments.:spoken:

On the topic, though, Glaxo's fine was larger even than Rick Scott's - but not much bigger.

Since this was aimed at me, I will be glad to respond

First, I come here to discuss politics and to share information. It is a learning experience and I happen to love politics and love learning.

It is also important to me what happens in this country. This forum will not make a big dent at all, if any, but the country is made up of a lot of little forums like this where americans share points of view and learn. I learn here so that I can participate and contribute to intelligent conversation with others on current events.

My question to you after that....WHY DO YOU COME HERE. You do no research on anything...you avoid anything of substance and simply seem to come here to make snide comments to people and I suppose you then think you are a funny guy. Thats ok, but dont be crticizing anyone else.

If you come here for a different reason, then say so but I see nothing but what I said.

This particular group of posts may not be important to you...perhaps you could give a rats behind how this is paid for....how much it will cost us in the future, I DO.

I am not sure that your day was any more eventful than anyone else an wonder why you share it so much. I do as much if not more in the course of the day than you do but do not feel that anyone on here wants to know or cares.

As I said, why do you come here ? Do we entertain you or are you here to try and entertain us. Again, you come into a thread, twist it around and make your little cute observations.

Thanks for your criticism of me...I will surely keep it in mind.

you're right, buggyone, it really should be of no concern to you how others choose to spend and enjoy their time. i love bucco's posts and am grateful that bucco takes the time to make all of those posts. this may not be a friendly forum - but it sure is filled with information! sifting through it makes a better hobby for me than golf.

Well said. I think I've learned more from Bucco than any single poster on this forum. I don't often comment on them because I rarely have anything to add to Bucco's fine research and analysis. I should comment more though just to show I'm here, and reading and learning.

I wholeheartedly agree, Bucco.

@ The Buggy One...to each his own...live and let live...and have a great day doing what you do best! No need for constant criticism...we all want to live and learn...and learning is what I do best by reading Bucco's posts.

As I said, I was fully prepared for the posts that would be criticizing me for that post. Bucco seemed to think it was aimed at him. It was not.

I totally agree that we should live and let live and to have a great day at whatever we choose.

If someone wishes to sit in front of their computer all day, that is fine with me. I was only saying it is a great place to live here in The Villages and to enjoy life to the fullest.

I apologize if I assumed you were aiming that post at Bucco.

However...I only made that assumption because the op and Bucco were the only ones who posted before you did. I have never seen you criticize the op, so Bucco was the only other choice.

I guess you know what they say when the word "assume" is used.

To the original post. Why aren't people up in arms about this case? In all seriousness, what does happen to a fine like that? Where does the money go? I imagine it is already allocated for things like better education of physicians, advertising to report fraud and so on. Where will that money really go?

At the time you made your remarks only eweissenbach had posted and he simply made a one sentence blurb on something that just happened.

TO WHOM was your remark aimed then ????????

And again you make assumptions that I sit in front of a computer all day....you have no clue of what electronic devices I have or use and would appreciate if you could limit your remarks AFTER YOU EXPLAIN TO WHOM YOUR ORIGINAL REMARK WAS AIMED...keep your remarks away from me or anyone else for that matter.....if you can speak to the thread subject with information, comment or question, but stop talking about me personally. I have asked you this before when you were doing it in email and on here and I am asking you nicely again. You threatened to put me on ignore...PLEASE then maybe my life, on here or off here, will get the heck out of your mind.

Now, I am off to Tampa where I have a investment meeting, then wife and I enjoy a nice meal and then to the Tampa Yankee game where I have season tickets, then back the high rise in Tampa to watch the end of the Yankee/Ray game. I hope all of that meets with your approval.

According to today's Tampa Bay Times, Florida will receive $56.7 million from this settlement. Out of that amount, the whistle-blowers who were instrumental in the investigation will receive $2.4 million. The paper doesn't say where the remainder will go.

Bucco, anyone who reads the thread understands what is happening and who the remark was directed toward. I know it is sometimes difficult, but just ignore it. Enjoy your day with your lovely wife. Be safe. BK

Somehow it is connected with Medicaid and from what I'm reading, each state will get a portion of the monies. Thanks, janmcn. The Tampa Bay Times comment put me on the right path for my answer.
