View Full Version : Posh, me, our bet and The Daily Sun

I am not a betting woman. I really don't like gambling, I am too um, thrifty, some people call me tight.

But in the heat of things on TOTV, I sort of, impulsively, bet Posh, that The Daily Sun did NOT change hands.

He said that it had and he would streak naked through the square if he was wrong and I said it hadn't and I bet fifty bucks it hadn't.

Well, I could never find any proof of any kind of switch in ownership....

BUT..

as of late, I seem to be getting a different kind of feel from the paper. They are running more "out there" stories. This morning the HUGE headline on the sports page was" BEYOND REPAIR" and had a LARGE close up of Joe Paterna. (Very different for The Sun and slightly....controversial)

There have been several other kind of bigger emphasis on things of national interest and more coverage of shall we say, not positive local happenings.

OH I think that there is a possibiltiy that Posh may have been right. Now the ediitorial section still slants to the right, but the stories have had more zip and oomph as of late.

I am likin' it.

Do I pay? (Nothing is proveable, and many would like to see Posh run through the squares in his birthday suit)

Help me dear readers.

I am standing here clutching my fifty bucks in my hot little hands.

It does seem like a somewhat different newspaper. I can not find any hard evidence that it has been sold yet either just a rumor in the Villages, Wikipedia article.

I worked for Gannett Newapapers for 20 years. One of the things I learned is that in the end it is the relationship between the publisher and the advertisers, not the readers, that largely determines the editorial content of a newspaper.

There was a little story in today's paper reporting on some source's claims of doubts to when Romney really left Bain Capital.

Now, I don't want to turn this political. I only report this as it's one of the first stories I've seen in the Sun that's not particularly helpful to Romney, and thus antithetical to the normal Daily Sun slant.

There does seem to be some sort of editorial shift.

Who out there knows how to set up a survey? We could have the TOTV population vote on the question - should Mr. Posh08 streak through the squares to fulfill his part of the bet?

We can only assume that since no change of ownership was announced in The Villages Daily Sun, that it has not changed hands, right? It is promising to hear that the Sun is becoming more news oriented, but don't think I'll cancel any subscriptions just yet.

Seeing as there is no definite winner based on current knowledge and both have a right to expect compensation for the outcome, it only seems fair that they both donate $50 to a local charity and both streak naked through the square. Then all is fair. If the correct outcome is every determined then the winner can claim the original bet.

The Registered Agent is just the person who receives official paperwork and such for any FL corporation. www.sunbiz.org - Home (http://ccfcorp.dos.state.fl.us/)

I could not find anything definitive about just who actually owns the Villages Daily Sun. The papers actually filed look very vague. They name only a lawyer and Philip Markward but allow for other stockholders.

If you look at the Articles of Incorporation filed with the State under Philip Markward you see that since he is the only person on the board and the filings give him quite a bit of power to alter the board, who knows what is actually going on here? http://ccfcorp.dos.state.fl.us/

I did note the date and the name of the corporation.

All I am saying is that the vagueness of the Articles of Incorporation could mask just who owns the Villages' paper. Philip Markward is the only stockholder named but the Articles give him the power as Sole Director to bring in the usual suspects of the various past owners of Villages' entities as additional Directors/Stockholders. It just looks like business as usual in the Villages. Check the other filings for Philip Markward.

Try looking up "The Villages" in the Wikipedia and scan down to "Developer-controlled Media". Notice the parenthetical statement on that line.

It also states WVLG being owned by "the developer (or their descendants)" which is correct since Harold's great grandchildren now own the radio station, not The Villages of Lake-Sumter, Inc.

It looks like The Villages of Lake-Sumter, Inc. is the developer, his family, friends and business partners.

There could be more information coming though.

From today's paper, it looks like the publisher is still The Villages of Lake-Sumter, Inc.
