I would not say stay away from these guys but they charged me $149.96 for an a/c filter which I just saw on Amazon for 2 for $46.50 for the exact same. Complained after I had paid but no luck. Villagers be warned!

I am just asking, did they come to your home and install it? If they did, they must have charged you a service call plus price of the filter. They are not hard to change yorself.

The money is not only for the filter but for the time it took to install, employee salary, company overhead, and profit margin.

Saying you saw the filter on Amazon.com for a hundred dollars less is like saying you can buy a set of spark plugs at Pep Boys for $12 but if you have a set of spark plugs installed at the Lexus dealer, they charge you $109 per hour labor plus the spark plugs at $63 plus the shop fee of $25.

Basically, if you want a service specialist to do the work, it costs a lot more than buying the part and doing it yourself. You did not get ripped off.

The charge is on top of the so called free service! If I had know I would have bought and installed myself. Installation takes all of 3 minutes.

What kind of filters are you talking about? I buy 3 for less that $10 at Lowes and install them myself. I do have a HVAC guy come once a year and go through my HVAC system for about $70 and he puts a new filter in as part of the inspection.
Having said all of that.....you're right about watching out for less that honest techs.

All depends on the MERV which I found out is to do with what it filters. Looking at the chart http://www.mechreps.com/PDF/Merv_Rating_Chart.pdf you should be wary of low (cheap) MERV ratings
