Laundry tub, how important is it to YOU?

When the kids were at home, I used the laundry tub many times. I washed off boots, kids toys etc... Also cleaned paint brushes and a few other things.

We have been in our latest home for 7 years and have used the laundry tub 5 or 6 times.

Thinking about not putting a laundry tub in our Iris, but using the space for a small refrigator.

Any ideas or thoughts?

We are getting a quote this week to have ours moved to the garage.....Not sure how to use the space once sink is relocated. Maybe a drop down Ironing Board?? Laundry Hamper?? Looking forward to my new laundry room!

I use my laundry tub after gardening. I find that if repot a plant or even just do the weeding, I end up with soil, leaves or twigs on my arms and legs. I leave soap and paper towels at the sink in the garage and clean up the gardening tools and myself before I go in the house. Beats tracking the dirt thru. But, if you have only used it a few times in 7 years, you probably can skip it.

Well that is the option that we are thinking of. On the other hand, can the outdoor hose work as well?

I think in the garage would be great if they will accommodate that change. The cleaning up from gardening and golf sounds good. Although I have one in my garage now and after five years in this house I have never used it! I'm just a TV wannabe, but I am already looking at not having the laundry sink because my husband has to have an ice machine - he doesn't like the ice refrigerators make - and that is the only place I think it will fit! So...to the laundry room for ice I say!

Since I thought I would rarely use the laundry sink, I asked Melissa at my Design Team meeting earlier this year if I could remove it and put a cabinet there instead. She said I could put a cabinet there (like the kitchen cabinets) but I could not close it off and have a door put on it!!

The area turned out great and there is a lot of space in that cabinet. Great for extra storage. I might even take out a couple of the shelves as it would be a great place to put the vacuum cleaner. I will see if I can figure out how to post a picture!! Never done that before.

I got the pedestal washer and dryer with the storage bins underneath for my Mom. She is 88 and it is much easier for her if she wants to throw in a load.

Just thinking that the outdoor hose could do the minimal cleaning that we need. Thanks for asking.

I love my laundry tub. I had it installed next to the laundry room door just inside the garage. Plans called for it to be over next to the water heater, which seemed totally useless to me. Why drip water all the way across the garage. I use it instead of a mop bucket for mopping the floors of if something is heavily soiled, I can rinse it out there and then put it inside straight into the washer. I keep pump hand soap on the back of the sink and we wash our hands there after cleaning the litter box and used to do the same after doggie poo cleanup when we had our dogs. I put one of the sticky hooks on the side of it to hang the litter scoop. We do the golf clubs there, wash out pet dishes....all kinds of things. I would not take for it. I'd give up something else first.

Missypie, if a Refrigerator is more important to you I would go that route.

Personally, I just finished a laundry room remodel for our home here that we are hopeing to sell, so we can move to TV. We went from a small utility sink to a double one, as we have 2 large dogs that shed on everything, and I run the new super capacity lg washer into it, and it strains out all the dog hair, which keeps me from having back ups, and plumber calls.

That is exactly our plan ... we move in 2 weeks from now.

Why not put the small fridge in the garage and save the "moving" cost? We have had a garage fridge for, uhm, I dunno, maybe 15 yrs and love the extra space for beverages and "stock up" items.

I scrub mine out well and use it to defrost a big turkey by immersing it in cold water.

Mine is inside and i use it to bathe the dog, mopping and various other things. I did buy the largest shelf I could find to fit over the sink when not in use. I can use that to fold laundry, etc. I put bumpers on the underside of each corner to keep the shelf from falling into the sink.

We use ours almost every day. Clean golf clubs, clean off golf shoes, clean sneakers. I'm a gardener so use it for cleaning tools and hands etc. I also use it to clean large pans after I have cooked. It is big enough to hold a huge electric frying pan which I use outside, and also a slow cooker which I also use outside; and we used to bathe the dog in it.

To me they are invaluable! Just my opinion of course.

Wish ours was in the garage. A small freezer would fit in the space. I think I will try to move it to the garage, but the plumbing will be quite a challange. If I was building again, I would put it in the garage if they allow it.:shrug:

Ok got great ideas here. So I guess in our iris we will have an additional cabinet built in and also add the second fridge in there. Then put the laundry tub in the garage. I will have to ask the design team for the best spot to put it in.

Ours is in the garage already (patio villa) but we kinda wish it was in a different location. It's currently along one wall of the garage, right next to where the hot water heater and air handler sit. If it was back in the corner by the garage door (would be more "out of the way" then), it would give us a little bit more room on that wall for the golf cart or whatever.

So if you're going to relocate your sink to the garage - or are planning it for the garage in a new build - you'll probably want to give some consideration to what would be most beneficial location for you.

That is probably the prettiest laundry room I have ever seen!

However, the folding table would be too small for me to fold fitted sheets, etc. I would die for an ironing board. Where do you hang garments that come out of the dryer and don't need ironed or those you just ironed? I don't see any of the various bottles of laundry potions I seem to accumulate and never fit in my shleves becaule they ar too tall! How do you reach those shelves at the top? I'll bet you put something up there and it stays for 15 years. I know because I just cleaned my kitchen preparatory to moving. Are those towels or sheets in the cupboards? Is the laundry a good place to store them? I don't see anything in the picture that indicates storage for brooms or vacuums or brooms/mops. One last thought, what if your washing machine breaks? I'll leave it there. I hope this photo was just an idea to kick around for maybe color or arrangement or style of cabinet.

I am just trying to play devil's advocate here. I hope you don't think I'm just playing devil. Personally when I'm making decisions like this, I'd sure like to find these things out before I make the decision than after. I hope you feel the same. Best wishes on your decision, whatever you choose.

We didn't have a utility sink at all when we first moved into our resale - so after we mopped the floor there was no place to empty the bucket of dirty water but down the kitchen sink...we also have dogs and I didn't really like washing out their bowls in the kitchen sink either, so we added a sink to our garage and I am grateful every day it is there!

During the design process of our Lily, we had the utility sink moved to the garage right outside of the door from the garage to the house. We had a utility closet built in the space. We ended up with a $65 credit. Nice closet for my upright vac, mops, ironing board, step stool and extra laundry hanging pole. The shelf at the top is great to store rags or really big bottles of Tide. I hung a bar across the back wall to hold the broom, mops etc. Hung an over the door hanger to hang a cloth bag which holds all my plastic bags from shopping. We put the wine/beverage center in the cafe/nook next to the pantry. I have the washer and dryer with the pedestals and I find the storage in the pedestals and the cabinets above the washer and dryer to be ample space for laundry stuff, light bulbs, batteries and vases and other stuff.
Fyi, I am 5/3 and can reach the stuff on the bottom shelf of the cabinets over the washer dryer, but must use a step stool for anything higher.

My Design Team Meeting was February 28th, 29th and March 3rd of this year. The price of the storage cabinet was less than the laundry sink. They didn't give me a credit. The price of my home was lowered by the difference in the price.
