I know I am old but I am not from the hoop skirt era.

I have been watching ads for back to school on television and from the merchants that sell kids clothing.

Wow, it is really hard to put your finger on the pulse of todays fashion for little kids. If you were a grandmother wanting to send an "I care" package to the grands for back to school...what would you buy?

I have seen red knit jackets with contrast banding like 90 somethings wear paired with ruffled chiffon skirts over pink tights and accessoried by lots of strands of beads. I see lace tops with jeans and a lot of bellies hanging out. The boys are pictured in plaid flannel shirts over tee shirts that say...I'm with Stupid..or Your mother wears..(never mind) and some little lads are paying as much for their sneakers as I did for my last car.

Now these kids all look nice, because kids do always look nice because kids are always cute and I understand that this is their time to shine and make their statement about fashions...but I do remember our girls wearing cute dresses back to school and then shorts and tops that kinda went together.

Alright. I just read what I wrote and I do sound old.

Anybody sending a package back to the grands? How are you doing?

Gracie,

I stopped giving clothes to my neice and nephew years ago. They always took them back with the gift reciept that I included in the package. At first it hurt my feelings, but then I got over it. Now I give cash, gift certificates to stores that they like. In their public school middle school they have uniforms. So when they came home they would change into their fun clothes.

When and if I ever become a Grandma, I'll give the mommies $$ to buy them clothes. Not as fun but......

I'm with you both! I have 4 teen grandchildren and I gave up buying or sewing them clothes a long time ago! I just send $ or gift cards!

I'm a proponent of uniforms for school! Two of my grands go to a private school with no uniform policy. They do have a dress code but from what I've seen it is very loosely enforced!

Another vote to give a gift card to a store they shop at.

I know it sounds impersonal but it is much more effective as they buy what they want. IMHO

I agree with the gift card. I would find out which stores they really like. Kids LOVE to shop and having a card from Grandma (or Auntie) is the coolest gift. There is no way I can pick out clothes, they have such specific taste. Actually though, if you think about it, we are the same way. When I go shopping with my daughters (or even my husband) I know they get exasperated showing me clothes that I don't like. Go with the gift cards and ask them to send you pics of what they bought (they also love to take pictures!)

Gracie. Bake cookies and send them with gift cards. Adds that personal touch.

You do bake Gracie, right? Maybe the Grands would prefer you didn't send cookies?

We break the bank buying dance outfits, average cost for our grand girl is $1800 per year....and you can't even wear them twice.:throwtomatoes:
