Analysis: Why gun controls are off the agenda in America - CNN.com (http://edition.cnn.com/2012/07/23/world/americas/analysis-colorado-shooting-mann/)

Seems more about big money and big politics than about the US Constitution.

I didn't hear "Big Money" mentioned. Many good points made. If you want to decrease violence why worry inanimate objects, how about starting with the automobile which is responsible for more violent deaths in this country than any other inanimate object.

Let's get off the gun crap and figure out why Chicago was awash with thugs. Why every big city is rampant with thugs.

Let's find out what is causing the violence. Let's correct that.

Big politics usually involves big money.

Various youth see gangs as a quick and dirty way to earn large amounts of money and respect on the street. Unless you offer them different opportunities not sure what can be done in the very poor economy which you find in many US metropolitan poorer areas.

A few ideas:
Break the cycle of poverty. We know that if you graduate from high school and postpone having children until after that and until you are married the odds are strongly in your favor that you will never be poor or in jail. This requires phasing out AFDC over time.

Improve education. Public schools, particularly in the inner cities have failed our youth. In every case that I can find, parents of inner city children stand in line for a chance to send their child to a charter school rather than continuing to go to gang and drug infested public schools. The graduation rate and success rate of the children in charter schools lead those in public schools by light years.

Discourage dependency. Reduce the period of unemployment benefits and eliminate them for seasonal workers. Denmark determined conclusively that the greater the length of unemployment benefits, the longer people stay unemployed. Eliminate income tax refunds to people who have paid little or no income tax. If you earned a refund, fine, you should get it. If you haven't, you should not. This includes illegal aliens who claim a dozen or more dependents and send our taxpayer dollars back to Mexico.

What are your ideas todo something constructive for our youth and our cities?

Idess for your consideration:
-Eliminate your first three paragraphs from the realm of reason.
- Breaking the cycle of poverty is not going to happen
- Only Parents who care want to improve the lot of their kids. I
suspect there are, in inner cities, pitifully few of them.
- Tax refunds result from paying more that you owe. What's the problem?
-Upgrade our judicial system to effectively deal with all illegial
activities. How about an eye for an eye. Shoot someone, you die. Rape
someone you goto jail for ever, rob someone and get taken off the streets
till you're to old to rob again. If you go to jail you serve your full sentence.
No early release.
etc., etc., etc.

Specifically speaking the issue of gangs is going to be a problems because its cultural has been reinforced for generations. It has been sanctioned by Hollywood in the continuing gangland movies invoving several nationalities and races. How can you effectively deal with that when Hollywood glorifies thugs on those large picture screens. I believe it was John Gotti who on a continuum watched the three Godfather movies.

Secondly our eductionally system has been dumbed down so that logical thinking has been eliminated replaced by teaching kids about how they feel,

While being concerned about a kid's emotional responses it is in my humble opinion it is better to teach them that nature has its limits, life is not fair and just, and they sooner they accept that fact the better they will be able to cope.

Instead we have liberals in education and governement insanely attempting to apply an elusive fairness in everything and again insanely trying to eliminate all risks of living..like that is going to happen. Some people will alwyas be smarter, richer better looking more athletic, ettc Natural disasters will always occur. People wil always go to war over something people will die in accidents, people will go bankrupt But all helicopter parents, teacher and politicians do is enable kids reinforcing their insecurity indecisions etc that comes with being over protective.

As a kid my Dad expected that if a bully in the street picked on me I best stand up to him. Today a Dad like that is sent to jail for telling his kid to knock the bully on is butt

When my daughter was getting ready to nest she asked me this question: Dad if I asked you the one thing I should look for in a man what would you tell me? My immediate response was a man is not judged by the size of his biceps but by how he handles life's problems. In today's society politicians, educators, parents etc fail to take responsibility, fail to teach their kids responsibility and fail to be completely honest with them by telling then that life is not fair get over it and get on with making the best of it. If you think me wrong just sit back and observe what parents, educators politicians say and do.

I would modify the above to suggest observing what educators and parents do not do.
Our values have been so eroded by the useless self serving concept of political correctness (barfbarf....sorry it happens everytime I use those words), do not dare offend anybody by demanding what is right, permissive anything goes as long as it is not in my back yard society.

No discipline.

No spine.

Absolutely no concept of stand and be counted.

Ongoing deterioration of America and we the people first.

How about we try saying what we mean and mean what we say.

Of course all the above is double in effect if one is a politician.

Try standing and being counted for what you believe.

PS....for some that does require more than name calling and partisan snipping.

the only thing worse is a partisan supporter that parrots the politician of their choice....very little if any thought or questioning of wrong statements or doings.

There is no political loyalty that warrants loyalty and repition of known wrongs, lies or untruths....hence most of what they say.

The only true measure....show me where you did what you said you were going to do...and ask the question when? by who?

Never happens.
