I realize of course that I am probably the only person that has gotten somewhat sedentary and lazy over the past couple of years but I was kind of hoping that I may have some kindred spirits out there. If so, did you find that moving to TV and getting involved and more active helped to get you back into shape (Please say yes!!) In my mind, I see myself riding my bike with the wind blowing in my hair, dancing in the squares, developing phenomenal skills on the pickleball court and golfing every day. This of course would enable me to buy a complete new wardrobe since everything I own will be falling off of my newly svelte frame. What was your experience? Did you get more active or were the folks that are active always that way? I know..it's an individual thing but just hoping to get a consensus.:)

Since moving to TV I've gained over 30 pounds! I am more active but that doesn't help because I eat more calories than I obviously burn. All activities here seem to be centered around food. I love to cook so I'm guilty of contributing to my weight gain.

Not happy about the way I look or how I feel, I have gone on Weight Watchers and am now down 16 pounds. But to do that I have had to stop eating out. I weigh my food and make sure I eat a lot of veggies low in calories. It's an on-going battle. I can't avoid all unhealthy foods. If I did, I'd be anti-social. So...I have to be cognizant of what I eat and stay true to where I want to be weight-wise. It's not easy!

As for the slim and trim...I tell myself they are born that way. I have to believe that or I'd go crazy!

I agree. Most activities have food stuck in there someplace. When I first moved here I gained 25 lbs. I went on low carb and lost it. Now I'm back where I was when we moved here but still need to loose more. Eating out definitely contributes to weight gain, but it is a social thing which I love participating in after golfing.

I am still in better condition that I've been in years living here. The stress from not having a job does me good for sure.

I go out to eat to socialize and enjoy the company of others, not to eat!

If you want new clothes eat to live, don't live to eat :coolsmiley:

The past two winters while in TV I have lost a few pounds. I am a male, so don't know if my experience relates. I think the reason I lose weight is I am very active there and don't sit around eating junk food.

I am constantly amazed at the portion sizes of restaurants in the past few years. My husband and I can barely eat one meal. We usually order one meal plus an extra salad and have leftovers. No wonder everyone has trouble with their weight. We were all brought up to "clean our plates" but our mothers would be aghast at the enormous amount of food we now have to clean up!

Down 60 pounds since April, 2011. Since moving to TV I go to the gym 5-6 days a week, paddleboard 1-2 times per week, and am active in the TV scuba club, diving every few weeks. I mow my own lawn and mow my mother-in-law's as well. Selling my business (in which I was primarily sedentary) was the healthiest thing I've ever done for myself.

I still eat too much, but my increase in activity level more than offsets this.

Trish, yes, you will be much more active than you are at home. But then you will be so busy you won't have time to cook, and there are so many nice restaurants here & the neighbors have potlucks & driveway parties, and a trip to the square always seems to include a drink or 2 or an ice cream cone...

I've heard that the Villages' Freshman 15 is real. I personally experienced the Freshman 10. When I had to buy a stretchy belt from the belt guy at the square I realized I had to take control. Now I have a predetermined number on my scale, and when I start to approach that number I stop eating.

Everybody is different, and I am sure there are 2 or 3 people who moved here who never gained an ounce!

It takes time to eat a lot, several times a day. I think having more time on ones's hands and being at home more after retiring would contribute to eating more. If you're out of the house and busy doing things like golf, classes, working out, volunteering jobs, etc., there won't be so much time to eat meals or big snacks.

And it's a great place to walk, walk, walk....year round.....no ICE to slip on and make yourself a wreck on that! We keep less food in the house here, too, which means we have to make the effort to walk or drive the cart to Publix or SweetBay to get something to fix at home.

It's also a good idea to stay away from Sam's when they are serving those food samples that are delicious and enticing.....and often highly fattening.

During my annual wellness check yesterday, my Dr. gave me the little "Senior Chat" for the first time. "You don't burn calories like you use too so cut back. Up the veggie portion and cut back on the meat portion." She was however very pleased that I was planning on moving to TV and had taken up golf again. Trish, I noticed when I was in TV that people would circle the block and parking lots looking for places to park. Park away from places and walk. Walk wherever you can and stay away from the famous TOTV pizza wars.

I lost 68 pounds before moving here. When I arrived people warned me about the Village 30. After being here two months, I think it is because most people are eating out every day and LOTS of happy hours. We won't go into about riding around in golf carts all day. They didn't say how many pounds were usually added on tthe second year. I brought two bicycles and going to mow my own yard just for exercise. It's a different world when your not carry that extra 50 or 60 pounds around.:gc:

I see this behavior in the gym parking lot all of the time, people circling the gym parking lot to find a closer space. It cracks me up--they're going to the gym to exercise, but avoiding walking the few extra steps from the car.

Moved here in October and weighed 255. Now down to 220 but seem to have plateaued. The main reason for the weight loss is that I am outside playing all day. I have also seriously cut back on calories, which was pretty easy to do since I ate so much before moving here. Now, trying to eat lower on the food chain, have better portion control, and step up my exercise. Try to swim for 45 minutes daily, go to martial arts 2 days a week, and golf almost every day. As much as I would love a cold beer on some days, I stick to water to make sure I stay hydrated. I sometimes fall off the wagon (wings and yings the other day), but try to realize it's a process.

See, another difference between women and men....there is no way in h*ll that any woman would actually admit to her before or after weight...unless she was 107 lbs and managed to get down to 105...darn, that used to be my weight, now it's my ideal blood pressure.

It's not that hard to do, if you fill your plate with meat and carbs that will displace the room available for veggies.

You will not lose weight. Sure you can exercise till the cows come home but if you haven't been doing that for the past number of years starting now is tuff and for most folks not sustained lifestyle.
If there R 85,000 folks here count the number in the gyms, and other exercise related activities.

Changing your eating habits is a much more sustainable route IMO.
Not speaking of fad diets, just the portions as stated above help dramatically, then get active.

If your meat/carbs are reduced to a portion the size of your palm you can have a truck load of veggies, you will lose 5 plus pounds a month.

You can go out to eat as much as you like - just order right.

Ladies if you want new clothes and more attention from your other half ..........

Trish, my wife will admit her weight perhaps not on a public forum but in person, but then you won't need to ask.

Trish, that is so true. I'm laughing here. The only woman I ever heard tell her weight here in TV was someone who was complaining about weighing 118 lbs. (Well, honestly, I think she was bragging). :mornincoffee:

My family doctor told me to lose weight, you have to eat less and exercise more.

I found that looking at it like a lifestyle change as oppossed to a diet. Diets are a failure waiting to happen. Having several small meals plus snacks such as fruit worked wonders for me, (lost 37 lbs).

Two tips:
1. Physologically, your mother put too much food on your plate so you have to portion your meals appropriately.

2, Restaurants give you twice of what you need so ask for a doggie bags at the beginning of the meal and scrap off half to take home.

Good luck in losing weight, as it a hard thing to do as we get older.

Boy, you really nailed it. There's a guy on my street, a snow bird, who walks all the time when he's down here in the winter. Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk. But he has a huge stomach that never goes away. He always looks exactly the same. One day I bumped into him in the supermarket and when I saw what he had in his shopping cart, I understood exactly what the problem was.

Every time I come back to the village home I will loose 8 to 10 pounds the first week...Its because I am doing something everyday with friends and I hope when I finally retire and move there permanently the weight lose keeps me going...My one food sin is there is nothing like having a beer or two with golfing buddies after the game, discussing the shot or telling short stories , in my mind there is nothing like it...

I've always thought this was a hoot also! Yardwork and mowing ones own grass with a push mower helps too. Funny that people will pay to get in shape and lose weight but won't do the free things that will accomplish the same!
I have a lady friend that says she only likes to sweat in air conditioning! She does admit her overweight though (at least to me). Only female I've known to do that.

I have four activities and I do at least one everyday. Play softball, play golf, walking or 90 minute workout. Today it was 18 holes at Havana, tomorrow with be a 90 minute workout (in-home using resistance bands, medicine ball and hand weights), Saturday will be a softball game, and when I can fit it in the schedule I'll walk 45 minutes which covers 2-1/2 miles.

When we go to the square I'm usually amazed at the men that walk around with those huge stomachs. I'm 5'9" tall and 160 pounds and 62 years old, usually I can't keep weight on. It's all a matter of exericse, keeping active and not eating too much.

No, I have to agree with my Canadian friend on this. Heck my folks all live into the 90s, some the 80s. We have hearts like bulls and bellies like hogs. Appetites like Irish landlords. Now, the smart ones among us walk, walk and walk. We tend to watch the carbs (when the dear wife ain't a spyin) Hahaha.

Lol! Just count the leftover cans and multiply by 12 oz. Then divide by 16 and you have the number of pounds lifted during the workout. Of course this doesn't solve "left vs. right", but it's a start.

No conversation would be complete without a word on moderation. Ha!

Moderation doesn't work with any of the following addictions: Drinking, smoking, gambling, and marital cheating. That being the case, why do so many people insist that it should work with junk-food addiction? (Don't forget to include excessive consumption of starches and fatty meats.)

We might still be young at heart and feel young, but, lets face it, we are no longer young. We are OLD! Old........(rhymes with darts). At this late stage of our lives, moderate consumption of junk food doesn't work well, as if it ever did. So just stop the junk food (cold turkey) and don't look back.
