It seems lately there have been quite a number of negative posts. While people will always have differing opinions and sources of information, I think (IMHO) there has been a certain amount of intolerance and confrontational posts. I can't imagine meeting any one of you and not liking something about each of you. To disagree about something in a post is one thing, but to have an argument is quite another. We have all worked long and hard to purchase our homes in TV and enjoy our retirement. One of the very best things about owning in TV is the fact that every person is on equal footing. The amenities apply to one and all, no matter our backgrounds, or where we hail from, or what we did before we got there. As TV grows there will be more people with more ideas and different ways of living. But in retirement we all strive to be happy and enjoy life, and isn't that the whole point? The forum is a wonderful way for us newbies to garner information and learn about what goes on in TV. I am so happy to have "met" some of you through your posts and truly hope to meet you all in person at some point. I probably am getting myself in trouble for this post, but I sure hope not! I am the consummate positive thinker and feel pretty lucky for my good fortune to be able to live (shortly) in The Villages! And to have you all as neighbors! Nuff said:)

Hotrodgirl, this is my first post and you have hit the nail on the head! I have read a lot of them and have had my jaw drop at some of the negative posts, from landscaping to pool music. You have stated it very well. I live in the new section below 466a, and after reading some of these negative posts I am almost wishing I lived somewhere else. One thing I know for sure is that I will NEVER post anything that can be taken out of context. You are so right that we have all worked hard to be where we are and we should all be considerate of each other, no matter what the issue is....most of us have had to put up with a lot of BS in our jobs and we shouldn't have to put up with it in retirement. So if someone posts a comment you don't agree with don't nail them to the cross, look at it from their perspective and just be considerate of each other. Ok, I didn't mean to go on, but that's what happens after a glass of wine:)

Well stated. However there are negative posts and there are differing opinions that are stated with respect. Aside from the political forum which embraces confrontation, people should be respectful of others opinions and state their differing opinion without malice. The problem with the internet is that everyone with a keyboard and modem can write anything as an "expert", whether they know anything or not. Another problem is you can't easily express nuance, or sarcasm, or humor without someone totally misunderstanding your intent. Best way to handle it is to not take it personally or seriously, and enjoy the good information you get and ignore the rest.

Well said. 99% of the people posting are really nice and helpful. It's that 1% that makes it bad. But if you notice, it's usually the same few names. If it is really offensive, just hit the small red triangle in the upper right hand corner of the post-- this lets the moderator/ administrator take a look at it. Let them take it from there. That being said, I have only been on the site for a few months but I have learned SO MUCH about The Villages and where to find so much useful info. This site is wonderful, don't let those few negative people get to you.

You wino! What do you mean you almost wish you lived somewhere else, in that case why don't you leave? NEVER post anything out of context......well aren't you just perfect! BS???? that is a thinly disguised substitute for a disgusting profanity...........................Just kidding - see, it is easy to take things out of context, but don't fear TOTV, it is a GREAT resource for all things to do with The Villages, and a LOT tamer and more friendly than almost any other forum I have ever participated in.

I haven't had a glass of wine----not yet. I just posted some comments on another thread regarding this subject and I hope not to repeat myself too much in case some read it.
We live in a negative world today. This year and especially in the next 4 months we are going to be bombarded with one negative commercial after another. Its election year! I'm already sick of these commercials. Its done because the "experts" say it works. People today believe half truths and "spin" that makes absolutely no sense. I am going to use some Southern Illinois hill country common sense and tell you that I believe this has an unconscious effect on all of us. No, I don't have a degree in psychology (only a minor in college many moons ago) but I don't think you need any degree at all to express a common sense observation on TOTV. Folks, I don't give up easily. I plan to "hang" and try my best to be positive and optimistic about TV and The United States of America. Time for that glass of wine. And right now, that's all I've got to say about that!

IMHO everyone just needs to lighten up. Some people like to b___h and I read those and get a good chuckle. That said I haven't been the target so maybe that makes a difference but it really should roll off our backs at this stage of our lives. I remember in my teen years everything bothered me, but as age and wisdom set in (especially when I hit 50) none of that really mattered so much. So don't take things to heart and enjoy this forum for what it is - people being people and a great source of information. FYI - went to Bonifay for lunch and did a drive by of the Sanibel pool, but didn't see any action. What fun we have in these retirement years. Loving life and hope you are too.

One of my favorite sayings is "I do everything for fun, if it ain't fun, I don't do it". I just want to have a good time.
It is such an awesome place here with so many choices. If someone doesn't like something, just move on to the next thing. I figure we have about 90,000 people here which means 90,000 personalities. That's one of the things I like. I love meeting people. :beer3:
Disagreeing is a good thing sometimes. That's how things blossom into great ideas.
It's the personal attacks that are sad.

I agree that humor, sarcasm, and dry wit sometimes do not convey well on a message board. At times this can lead to a great misunderstanding of the OP's intent and message.
I too have read many negative post's and wonder why some feel the need to attack instead of politely offering a dissenting opinion.

Aside from the political forum which embraces confrontation, people should be respectful of others opinions and state their differing opinion without malice.
You matter-of-factly state the political forum embraces confrontation. Is that the way it has always been? Is that the way it should be? Should being respectful of others opinions be limited to non-political discussions? Isn't it possible to discuss politics without resorting to personal, disrespectful barbs? Or are we so easily influenced by negative political ads that we all think it's the only way to discuss politics?
I enjoy a good discussion of political issues, but am completely turned-off by the most common form of televised political discussion best described as the 'shout fest'. Most of the political discussion I've seen on TOTV is merely a written version of the talk show shout fests.

The poli forum is not for the feint of heart, or for anyone who takes disagreement or confrontation too seriously, that is why it is an opt-in forum. I agree that it SHOULD be possible to discuss politics without resorting to personal, disrespectful barbs, but in reality it does not seem to work that way. I look at the poli forum as an amusing diversion, but not something I get too serious about, otherwise I would get either crazy or nauseous.

I read most of the posts daily but rarely get involved in those discussions that become intense. I am sure once I can put a name to a face it might be a bit easier to 'read intention', but I know I'm not confortable in confrontation and usually just hang back and read. One thing that can't be helped is the opinions formed about posters by what they write. I look forward to seeing if it holds true in person one day when I can finally meet all of you.

I'm hang'in with JustJim. We do live in a very negative (self centered, anti social society). These days, you can gas your car, grocery shop, see a movie and have lunch without ever looking in the eyes of another. "Swipe your card and don't ask me any questions", is the general attitude and it just floors me. This is one of the main reasons we decided to buy at TV. If just half of our expectations are realized, we will be very happy. No PhD here either but I do know that you get back what you put out. For some reason I don't understand (actually I do, but I won't go into it here), not everyone wants to be happy and have a good time. Stay happy, a positive attitude may not change the world, but if we can keep Village happy, that's a good start. :jester:
