Strange odors from Bathroom faucet water??

When we first moved in, the hot water smelled terrible, so did everybody in our neighborhood. You have to run the hot water for 30 minutes or more until the hot water heater is refilled. If your home is not new, then I don't know, we've not had any problems.

This is probably a very long shot but are you having ants around there? Reason I asked because in S. Fla one of our bathrooms smelled terrible and the exterminator said it was those odoriferous Ants (spelling?) Now they may not be in this area since the south of Fla is a very different climate. We had ants coming out the faucet when we turned the water on.

Chances are you are in a new house and the smell is the lining of the pipes that has not cleaned out completely yet. Run the water for at least 15 minutes on full force before using it as either washing or drinking water. Within 6 months to 1 year, the smell will disappear.

Maybe the irrigation water is tied into bathroom????? LOL Just Kidd'n!! More then likely, its just water that has been sitting still in pipes and water heater. It goes away after a while with usage.

That was funny and I know you are teasing, but it reminded me that plumbers do indeed make mistakes and we have a lot of nice plumbers up here that we consider friends........however.......they can get their pipes confused.

About 20 years ago, when our kids were still in college, we took them on one last summer vacation before returning up to UVM. Since we had to take a very early morning car ferry to Martha's Vineyard, we overnighted in Woods Hole, Massachusetts where the oceanographic institute is.
We had a motel right near it and also near the dock..........

After carrying our bags in, hubby and son and daughter put their feet up after a long drive. I went into the bathroom. When I came out, I told them that it was "very strange but the toilet was HEATED".......they all pooh poohed it and said that was impossible. I used it again and said the same thing. They just laughed at me.

Well, later...our son used it and came out and guess what?

Hubby then tried it..........and figured out that whoever did the plumbing had erroneously connected the HOT WATER to where the cold water to flush the toilet should have been...........so YES, THE TOILET WATER WAS STEAMING HOT.

You guys can picture the scenario...........hot steaming toilet water.

We all had a good laugh while spending our two weeks in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island..........and still remember it.

Shimpy that is a strong possibility. also the drains get clogged up with gunky stuff. I pull my drains apart and clean them thoroughly on a periuodic basis. a plummer told me to let the ho water run for 5 minutes or so a week to help keep the soap residue away from the pipes, especially at the opening in the wall beneath the vanity.

We might be overlooking the obvious. The faucet aerator may have accumulated plant matter which can rot over time. Yes, I admit it's a long shot but I'd take it off for a visual inspection. It takes just a minute.

You know that overflow hole in your sink? It's about an inch in diameter and is opposite from the faucet.

The inside* of the sink where the water drains through that hole can get filled with gunk which can have a vile smell. Try pouring some bleach down that little hole. May help ... did for me.

We used to have that issue when we lived up north. We finally figured out that the shaving cream my husband used every day somehow backed up into the sink drain overflow. Then when you turned on the water, there was a smell. It wasn't really the water but the drain that stunk. We solved that problem by periodically flushing the sink overflow with bleach water. And to be proactive, we started to use an enzyme drain treatment to keep all the drains running smoothly. Just follow the directions on the kind of stuff you buy. Look at Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. Hope that does the trick!

When I had our water system installed the house was a month old. I could not believe the sand, and other nasty material that the company flushed out of our pipes and our water heater.

May have just been our luck with that construction crew?
