This is really classy....a super pac ad for sure, but a super pac run by a former aide in the White House so he is not separated by great distance....

"A new ad from a super PAC supporting President Obama ties former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to a family’s loss of health insurance and a woman’s subsequent death from cancer. "
It’s the fourth hard-hitting ad from Priorities USA Action that focuses on former workers at companies closed by Romney’s former private equity firm, Bain Capital.

I don’t think Mitt Romney understands what he’s done to people’s lives by closing the plant,” said Joe Soptic, a former employee at GST Steel in Kansas City, in the ad. He says he lost his health care, and then his wife became ill.

“I don’t know how long she was sick, and I think maybe she didn’t say anything because she knew that we couldn’t afford the insurance,” Soptic adds. When she finally went to the hospital they found out that it was stage-four cancer, he says. She died soon after.

Soptic concludes, “I do not think Mitt Romney realizes what he’s done to anyone, and furthermore I do not think Mitt Romney is concerned.”

That is the ad.......now...

"The Republican candidate left Bain before GST Steel’s 2001 bankruptcy; Obama’s team has argued that the story is fair because Romney was at Bain when the initial investment was made. Politico notes that Ranae Soptic died in 2006, long after the plant closed, and CNN adds that at some points during that time she had insurance through her own employer.

Romney spokesman Ryan Williams called the ad one of many “discredited and dishonest attacks” meant to “conceal the administration’s deplorable economic record.”

New ad ties Romney to cancer death - The Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/priorities-ad-ties-mitt-romney-to-cancer-death/2012/08/07/d723d8c0-e084-11e1-8fc5-a7dcf1fc161d_blog.html)

This is a pretty sick ad....over the top does not cover it....to tie Romney to this cancer is inexcusable, but we are finding what ths man is all about.

THIS is what will possibly put Romney over the top.....more and more people want to hear about the issues, not an attempt to destroy personally a man who by all accounts has lived an open, thoughtful, family oriented, successful life.

I do not know where the bottom is but this ad takes it close.

You and I may agree that that is a very negative ad and has a bad taste.

However, the ad writers and consultants are paid very big bucks to know what sells and what does not sell. Their knowledge of the voting base must tell them these disgusting ads will work with certain bases without turning others off. Lots of psychology and focus groups show what works.

GST Steel had been in business for 105 years before Twitt and his posse of corporate thugs took control in 1993. They squeezed every last dime of profit, lined their own pockets and put GST in debt.

Eventually GST declared bankruptcy. Workers were denied their full pensions and health insurance.

End of story.

Now, you can spin your little PAC ads any way you want - but the folks whose lives Twitt and his thugs destroyed will vote on November 6.

Joe Soptic was earning $52,000 annually at GST Steel. After he lost his job, he was earning $15,000 as a janitor. How much health insurance do you think one can buy when you're earning $15,000 per year? This ad is powerful because nearly everyone out there knows someone who lost their job because of corporate raiders like Mitt Romney.

FWIW:

gst declared bankruptcy in 2001
soptic's wife died in 2006 - while romney was gov of massachussetts
romney left bain in 1999 to work on the 2002 winter olympics

the five on fox showed a parallel ad that was used in one of ted kennedy's campaigns - axelrod figured it worked then and would work again

"UPDATE (6:15 p.m. ET): CNN's Brianna Keilar is reporting that steelworker Joe Soptic's wife was insured through her employer, Savers Thrift Store. She was laid off from her job in 2002 or 2003, Soptic told CNN, at which point she lost her health insurance. So it would appear that Joe Soptic's firing had nothing to do with his wife's health insurance."

"Sometime in 2002 or 2003, Mr. Soptic says his wife injured her rotator cuff and was forced to leave her job. As a result she lost her health insurance coverage and Mr. Soptic's new job as a janitor did not provide coverage for his spouse."

in one of the cnn articles i hilited above, mr. soptic's salary was reported @ $24,000 as a janitor - not that $7,000 more makes it easier to purchase insurance - but a basic health ins policy was cheaper way back then - and the family could have used the charity care/uncompensated care funds available for treatment thru emergency rooms/clinics.

what happened to the soptic's employment was unfortunate but it was not mitt's fault as this ad wants to paint - nor was mrs. soptic's death - that was a tragedy - but not a result mitt having anything to do with it.

the ad is powerful because those who are not "able" for whatever reason to find out the facts will believe its inference.

Some of these people just do not read anything. Facts appear to be totally foreign to them but they dont care about facts. They care only about what they are fed to say and nothing else.

None of them find the ad disgusting at all did you notice.....just a continuation of what the WH put out today in defense. This was put together by a crony of Obamas and it is getting some press let me say !

Not exactly the kind of press they envisioned but press

Red State blogger, Eric Ericson, said "OMG This could be the day that Romney lost the election" when he heard what campaign staffer Andrea Saul said in response to the new Obama ad. Words to the effect, if Joe Soptic's wife lived in Massachusetts she would have healthcare.

As I said in an earlier post, psychologists are hired by the political teams to figure out what strategy works best in the ads. The ads are run through focus groups. This is all very scientific and not a hit or miss thing. Lots of big bucks go for the testing of these ads and for making them appeal to certain groups.

Anyone who was paying attention watched the Obama campaign and staff run from this add claiming that they knew nothing about this family and it was an ad from the PAC......HOWEVER...

"BUT…. As Politico’s Reid Epstein reports: “When President Obama’s aides said they weren’t familiar with former Missouri steelworker Joe Soptic’s life story, all they had to do was check their own campaign archives. … Soptic also appeared, wearing what appears to be an identical shirt, in a May television ad for the Obama campaign. … [Deputy Obama campaign manager Stephanie] Cutter hosted an Obama campaign conference call in May in which Soptic told reporters the very story featured in the Priorities spot.” http://politi.co/Thjn3f"

Business as usual in the WH !!
