Cats on the Lanai

I am renting my beautiful new home so it will be a while before I move to TV. But, I have a question about cats on the lanai.

Mom and I have two cats that love to go out on our patio. Of course, they are under supervision when they are out. They are both on their own 15 foot leash and go their separate ways. I had always put Frontline on them and recently switched to EasySpot per my vet. The vet said EasySpot covers more: fleas, ticks and chewing lice.

I know both of the cats are going to love the lanai. Do you need to use something like Frontline or EasySpot when the cats are in your screened lanai? Just curious!

No. Cat's haven't got fleas on lanai in four years and they love it.

Sable, I wondered the same thing but so far, after almost 4 years, we have never seen any evidence of fleas. Critters on the lanai is another story...

I've lived in Florida for 8 years, and my two cats have a pet door into a screened lanai. This past spring was the first time they ever had fleas, and I think it is because we didn't get a hard frost over the winter. Anyway, I have some Advantage in case I need it, but I only use it if fleas appear.

Fleas come in on people's pants legs or from friends and neighbors whose pets go outside. Even inside cats are not immune from fleas. This is from my Vet. Best thing is to thoroughly search your cats and treat if you find even one flea.

Omega, who has been with me almost 3 years, absolutely adores the lanai. Her predecessor, Beta, was here in TV for just over 3 years. He, too, adored the lanai.

Neither has or was treated against critters, despite my vet's urging!

So, I can't answer your question specifically, but I can say, "Why bother?"

That's what our vet said too. Rocomended once a month application as a preventative measure

My cats have been in and out on the lani for eight and I never had a problem here or in South Florida.

We have a regualr pest control service. They sprayed the inside of the house when we moved in, then they spray the outside every 3 months. They also spray the yard, schrubs, etc. I asked the rep, specifically, about the need to use a preventative treatment on our cat, and he said a lot of their customers no longer use it. Supposedly, their service will take care of anything, even if it does get into the house or onto the pet. Our cat loves the lanai, and we haven't had a problem.

We lived here 4 years and have not seen a flea on Duffy and he did take trips outside as well as the lanai. We never allow our home to be sprayed inside; too toxic for family and pets. Your pesticide people will spray a barrier around your home on the outside and that should be sufficient IMHO.

Do you guys get the Florida Lizards on your Lanai? How do the kitties respond to them? I have Kitties.

Yes an occasional gecko will show up on my lanai. The kitties chase and hunt but the little guys always get away (so far!) They are much quicker, more agile and smarter than the kitties

I feel that the animals should be treated 'just in case' as it is not fun to treat when they get them.
As for lizards, I have had 2 in my lanai and am grateful I did not have a cat. If the cat jumped and missed, there goes another screen for repair. I love cats and get a kick out of them. Very cool beings are those cats.

The 'critters' i referred to earlier were lizards on our lanai. We get them occasionally, and Baby Monroe catches them. He's very quick for a 3-legged cat. So far, he hasn't damaged the screen at all.

I'm not too worried about the screen as we have 4 patio doors in Michigan and the screens haven't been a problem. The screen door is something else. My little one just turned a year old and she will open the screen door if it isn't closed tight!! What can I say, she is a mischievous little kitty!

I don't understand why you put your cats on a leash when they are going out on an enclosed lanai. What's the purpose? :shrug::shrug:

They are on a leash at our home in Michigan! Mom doesn't want to move to Florida so I'm not in my new home yet!!

What's the name of your pest control service if you don't mind.I need the same done to my home when I buy it:)
