Garmin has recently made a change in it's policy regarding life time map updates. Although the wording is fairly vague many are taking it to read that if your GPS has NOT had the maps updated in the past 24 months it will be determined "out of service" and you will not longer be eligible for map updates. May feel that they are referring to the actual North American maps and NOT the firmware / operating system of the unit.
Bottom line is for everyone with life time maps to update the maps to keep on the good graces of Garmin.
