Safety in Garage with Gas

I will be a home owner in a couple of weeks and will need to buy a golf cart. Since I'll be back and forth for months at a time, I'm concerned about having a gas golf cart sitting in a hot garage for long periods.

Do I need to leave the cap open or closed? Should the tank be half full? Any other precautions that you can think of to keep things safe?

What do you think a fair price would be for a used (2008 & newer) gas golf cart and is one dealer more reasonable than another.

If I can leave my car in the garage with 20 gals of gas in it you shouldn't have to worry about a golf cart with 6 gals. I keep those and my motorcycle with another 6 gals in it and never has it been a problem.

I have a gas lawn mower, leaf blower, lawn edger, gas golf cart, and 5 containers of gas in the garage. I have never had a problem . When in NJ i had almost the same amount of gas items in the garage for 50 years with no concern. I therefore think it is safe.

if you smell gas in morning when you open garage door then you may have a problem with fumes escaping.

I agree. There have been more fires reported from electric carts than gas on this forum.

I am not an expert but have had gas for lawnmowers and similar equipment (NJ_ in my garage for years without a problem and know of no one who has had a problme. You can empty the gas cans into your car when you leave for the North, but I would not. I would fill the golf cart to the top to minimize fumes. Defenitely keep the gas cap on. Same for your gas cans. You might be able to stop by one of the fire stations and ask their advice.

Fumes from gasoline are what ignites. Empty regular gas cans can vent fumes unintentionally. If I were going to keep gas cans in the garage I think I would invest in the high quality, metal types that are rated to keep fumes from escaping.
