I have Windows 7. Can you tab to get into your control panel and choose Mouse? You can tab to Touchpad properties and adjust. I also have a little button right above my touchpad to disable my touchpad and sometimes I accidently turn off my touchpad.

Is there a little button just above the touchpad, below the space bar? That disables the touchpad.
Oops, almost duplicate post.

I tried looking in control panel / mouse but couldn't find touch pad properties.

The touchpad itself may have gone bad. May I ask how old the laptop is? Any warranty left on it?
I have replaced many touchpads (35+ years in IT.....) and it is not to difficult to do.

Have you added any new applications or updated existing applications recently that may have impacted your computer?

Yes
Go to the start menu in the lower left corner. Click on the control panel and find the device manager and click on it. Then find "Mice and other pointing devices" and click on it. Click on synaptics ps/2 port touch pad.
Then you will see if the device is working properly. If not, you can fix it there.
