Please everyone take a look at your pet. Don't let your pet get like Obie. Click on photo to watch this YouTube video. I cannot believe what some people will do to their dogs. This video is of a standard dachshund that weighs 77 lbs. Should weigh around 20 lbs. Thank goodness Obie is in good hands now. They say that the dog may need surgery to remove excess skin after it looses all the weight....just like people sometimes have to have when they lose an extreme amount of weight. Makes you wonder what the dog's owners looked like. Obie, the obese dachshund. - YouTube

If your dog gains weight and you know he's eating a reasonable amount, make sure to test him/her for Hypothyroid. It's very common in older dogs. I had two dogs with Hypothyroid. The first time it happened, I just thought I had an old fat dog, but when he was tested, he had it. Not that this is what the 77 lb dachshund has. Might just be overfed. But something to look for.

Obie had a lot of trouble walking. Imagine a 18lb dachshund who swallowed 4 12 lb. hams.

Obie could barely walk. Click on the photo of him in my original post. It should play the YouTube video of him. He is able to walk, but not far.

Thanks for that information. Might note that it doesn't mean your dog will be fat if it has hypothyroidism. I had one that had it, but she she was slim and trim (prior to diagnosis and after medication). But it would be something to have checked out.
