Weeds, weeds and more weeds HELP!

Has anyone hired any of the individuals advertising their services to weed by the hour? I am tired of spraying round-up and with the recent rain things have once again gotten out of control. Feel like if someone could come clean up the beds I can then maintain them. My concern is they simply take of the top and not the root which will get me where. Any suggestions?

It may be time to pile more pine staw on. We put Preen down (a preemergent) and add pinestraw twice a year.

I've learned that weeds pull up better when the soil is moist, like right after a rain.

.Too labor intensive - have lots of rock - there is weed block down but it has torn and doesn't cover then edges where the biggest problems are.
Gracie will try Preen, but have to get a handle on the mess before I do that.

REAL weed pullers are few and far between. I had a great one but she hurt her back. I found another couple that charged by the hour but I cannot get them to respond to an email to come out again. Too bad because they were really good. The one in the today's Daily Sun declined my offer. I guess I wanted more than weed pulling.

I am still looking.

What's wrong with weed-b-gone? Spritz it on the offending weeds, just keep it away from your plants and bushes, and in a couple days the weeds are brown and dead. Then you can easily pull the dead stuff or just let it disintegrate into the ground. This is our method and it works fine.

Be careful with that RoundUp it will migrate to any plantings and do them in, as well as the weeds. The weed-be-gone is a better solution.

Weed-Be-Gone is actually good to use around landscape bed edges as it kills off the weeds but not the grass......unless you've got the Zoysia working its way into the beds! :D

My mistake, I said weed-b-gone (whatever that is) but actually meant RoundUp. We've never had a problem with it killing anything other than the weeds and grass that invaded the planting beds. We're just careful where we squirt it. Been doing it this way for over 5 years.

I've used RoundUp at our church up north for the last ten years to keep a long row of anemone and shrub roses weed free. It has never harmed the plants as long as I don't get it on them. Even if I get part of a plant due to wind or some other mishap, it has injured but not killed the plant.

Down here I used it to keep the zoysia out of the landscape bed back when we still had the pine straw.

Why not do one more round of that and then start anew pulling them as they emerge if you're tired of spraying?

Jim: I am with you on "no chemicals", but I would be a bit nervous that the flame on this piece of equipment would start a slow burning fire in the mulch. I have been piling on mulch twice a year for probably seven years, so it is pretty deep. Right now the ground is wet from the recent rains, but it won't be long before we are bone dry and into the wild fire season.

I have a CYV with rock and weeds. Because I have dogs and do not want to use chemicals, I put a tarp over an area and anchor it with rocks. After several days of being deprived of sunlight, the weeds die and are easily removed. I don't do this in front yard because it would be too ugly. In front, I spray Weed B Gone.

Non-toxic weed control (but be careful -- it will kill anything you spray it on): 1 gallon vinegar; 1 cup of salt; 1 tablespoon dishwashing detergent. Shake it up and spray away. You need about 3 times the amount of spray on each weed than you do Round-Up but it does do the job. Be very careful to not spray on a sprinkler.
