Like many other villagers I am from Ohio. Ohio IS the center of the universe and the place where people still smile at each other, stop at STOP signs, don't save chairs and stop so you can walk in front of them.

Ohio is called the Cradle of Colleges and folks from my family stand and cheer for Ohio State, Miami University, Ohio University, University of Cincinnati, Case Western, Kent State, and University of Toledo.

Ohio is known for it's hard working and ethical people, immigrants from Germany and many other lands, it's farms and farmers, it's industry and last but not least it's cultural facilities. Ohio has the number one heart hospital in The U.S., The Cleveland Clinic and a huge and enthusiatic bunch of football fans.

If you are from Ohio, stand up and tell us!

I am not from Ohio but I have lived here over 30 years (along with a couples of months a year in TV). I am from the dreaded state "up north" but I must say that Ohio is everything that Gracie has said and more, it is a great place to live! I love the drive from the Marion area through Amish country and seeing the Amish folks with their horse drawn buggies and their way of life, I love the drive around the beauty of Columbus and their OSU spirit. But my favorite place is Cincinnati with its bridges, the river, duck boat tours, great resturaunts, etc.

I visit long time friends in Waynesville and Wilmington and have cousins in Cincy.
I thought about getting a place there for summer residence (practicing to be a snowbird) since I like the area but this year it was hotter there than Florida.
What's a person to do?

PS. If Bill can learn to say Y'all, then I can learn to say Ahia.

Had a good friend from Ohio, Cheryl Z., while I was at the University of Denver who had gone to Ohio State U to study librarianship. She was getting a M.A. in Librarianship and Information Management the same time I was. Then she became a librarian for various libraries on U.S. bases. She did have time to visit me when I worked in the SF Bay Area after I left Denver.

We have a lot of neighbors here in the Villages who hail from Ohio. Very nice people.

I'm 50 miles away..does that count? I love driving through Dayton because the art museum area looks so cool..also absolutely love Cincinnati. I do have a question however, I just don't get the whole Skyline chili thing. We stopped there once and I'm hoping this wasn't representative of all the Skylines..we thought it was terrible..watered down. Maybe I'll give it another chance on our way down. So there..from your neighbor in the north, I do love Ohio..except for their state police, Skyline chili and college football team.:D (they do have really nice people down there though!)

Don't miss the Air Force Museum, it's an awesome and free museum. They have a great IMAX theatre as well. I'm originally from Michigan, but lived in Beavercreek for the past 20 years. It's a suburb of Dayton. It was a great place to raise our son and a great place to live.

Lived and worked for the last 15 years in Toledo, a great "small" town with lots of big city amenities including our great minor league baseball team The Toledo Mudhens, a great museum, a top ranked zoo, and many great restaurants like Matthews (sadly, now gone) and Fifi's. However, as many people who live near a great lake know, winter can be prozac season with month after month of gray and dreary weather. But we get through the winters by rooting for the Toledo Rockets and the Bowling Green Falcons.

Born in Cincinnati - love the goetta, skyline, graeters, kahns. Friends bring them to us when they can. We can get the skyline/graeters here. Listen to the Reds/Bengals every game on the internet. Also go to the artimis cameras to check out what is happening at the riverfront. But, The Villages is home now - and we could not have come to a better place.

What a great thread! We lived in Upper Arlington about 3 miles from the Ohio State stadium so we hosted many post game football parties. Kind of miss that. Mr. Jojo is from Ashtabula up on the lake. I worked in the Ohio Department of Education and traveled the state and grew to appreciate the tremendous diversity. Ohio is both very rural and urban. My favorite place is the Hocking Hills in southeastern Ohio.

because we missed Columbus and Ohio so much in the summertime. Don't miss the winter. Buying a condo in Worthington, a north Columbus suburb. Love all the stuff there is to do here in the summer. Nights and mornings are still a lot cooler, although this summer in Ohio and the whole midwest has been much hotter than usual.

I just like doing DIFFERENT stuff here (mostly) than we do in TV. Still love both places.

As a boy in the 50's we traveled from Up-state NY to Akron at least once a year to visit my Grand Parents. Great Memories. As an adult in the early 80's we traveled from Louisiana to Up-state NY going through Ohio once a year to visit my parents. You bet! I usually go up there about this time of year for festivals and nice weather. The Corn Festival was in Wilmington last week and the Shrimp Festival is in Urbana this weekend. Trish, when I first married, my in-laws lived in Bloomfield Hills so we made that drive to MI quite often.

I still get goose bumps when you drive down the hill in northern KY to the river and see the Cincy sky line although the cool sign that said, "Welcome To The Queen City has been replaced.

Wondered why "Ohio Buckeye"

Quoting Wikipedia:

"Capt. Daniel Davis[3] of the Ohio Company of Associates, under Gen. Rufus Putnam, traversed the wilderness in the spring of 1788, and began the settlement of Ohio. Davis was said to be the second man ashore at Point Harmar, 7 April 1788, and he declared later that he cut the first tree felled by a settler west of the Ohio River, a "buckeye" tree. Additionally, Colonel Ebenezer Sproat, another founder of that same pioneer city of Marietta, had a tall and commanding presence; he greatly impressed the local Indians, who in admiration dubbed him “Hetuck”, meaning eye of the buck deer, or Big Buckeye.[4][5] Subsequently, the word is used as the nickname and colloquial term for people from the state of Ohio[6] and The Ohio State University's sports teams. The Ohio State University adopted "Buckeyes" officially by the school as its nickname in 1950,[7] and came to be applied to any student or graduate of the university."

Came very close to being called the "Hetucks"

I spent the first 63 years of my life living in Ohio and was always proud to say I was from there. Everything you all have mentioned are among my favorites also. I love going back to visit the family but don't miss the cold. I do miss my wonderful friends and family however. Evry time we go back I stock up on Ohio goodies and am happy to see that you can get more and more of it here in TV.

Love being able to call Village of Pinellas home but...have fond memories of Huron, Defiance, Bowling Green State University (1969-1973), Mansfield (taught at Crestview Schools) and 18 years as first grade teacher in Lakota Local Schools in West Chester. I'm a FROG with ties to OHIO!

Ohio rocks! I grew up in Mentor, about 20 miles east of Cleveland. I lived across the street from President Garfield's home and 30 minutes from Amish country. Extended family still live there and it will always be home to me, although I haven't lived there for 25 years.
Great thread...and great to virtually connect with so many from Ohio!

My husband is from Cleveland area (Garfield Hts) born, grew up there. I am from Akron. Met here in TV. Just coincidence, lived 20 miles apart. Miss Ohio, not the weather.

Gunner46 - I still have a lot of relatives that live in Garfield Hts. Ask your husband if he knows anyone from the Renz family or Sever family.

Funny story about Skyline Chili. My husband and I just spent Christmas near Indianapolis with our son and the first night there we were looking for a place to eat. He suggested Skyline Chili and I'm like "really?" as he would never eat chili at home - the kid doesn't even like hamburgers! He said it kind of had a sweet taste to it? True? Anyway, long story short, we didn't eat at Skyline Chili that night, but it sounds like our next trip out that way we should definitely give it a try!

BTW, my son's roommate is from Cincinnati and we had to drive across the entire state of Ohio to see them - does that count? ;)

You definitely should try Skyline chili and it sure does have a different unique taste. Also nothing like White Castle burgers.

Grew up in Lakewood and Rocky River and then on to OSU where I met my husband as I was moving into the dorm. We stayed in central Ohio until moving here in July. It was hard to make our last visit to Mirror Lake (where we got engaged) and see our final glimpse of The Shoe. Since we don't have any family in the area, it is doubtful we'll ever return there. I do miss some of the local things but not the bone-chilling weather they will have this week. I'll always consider myself to be a Buckeye no matter how old I am.

Born and raised on a small farm in Ohio (north of Dayton). Spent 37 years of my working career in Ohio (the last 32 in Cincinnati). Now full-time TVers...and love it here. As Gracie says, "TV is Paradise South." She should know...she's the Mayor!

Buckeyephan, We have a similar story. I met my husband when I was a freshman at Ohio State. He was treasurer and I was secretary of Block O so we met at the first club meeting in the Ohio Union. We lived in Upper Arlington for 37 years before moving here. We just went to the Orange Bowl - not a great endiing but we had a fun time. Our band is awesome.

It is a great museum. Love the aircraft nose art done back then. I've always liked the old bombers.

We just moved here from Wilmington Ohio. Miss the folks back home, but the weather here will have them all coming to visit soon. I know there are several people here from the Wilmington area. Give a shout out on here if you are one of them...it will be good to hear from you.

I do not know those families but did spend 19 yrs growing up in Garfield Hts. If you haven't been there lately the demographics have changed quite a bit. My wife grew up in Maple Hts...same there also.
