Queen Palms and Snakes

Has anyone heard anything about snakes being attracked to queen palms? My wife was told this by someone here in The Villages, but I had never heard of it. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know about snakes, but in California, rats do live up in the palm trees.

Not sure about snakes,but roaches tend to nest where the branches go into the trunk,it is damp and dark in there,if your queen palm is close to your home the roaches will crawl along the branches on to your roof,under the shingles and eventually into your home.I had this problem,got rid of the 2 queen palms,and in a month(some still under shingles) or so all roaches gone.

Our snakes seem happy to stay in the shrubs but we don't have any queen palms.

Don't know but it wouldn't surprise me. I watch the homes of a couple of snowbird friends. So far this summer I have captured five snakes in one garage and one snake in the other. The home where I captured five snakes has a huge palm in the back yard but not a queen palm. They came into the garage at the bottom of the garage door on both sides. I captured them with a peanut butter flavored "sticky trap".
I think the field rats around here live mostly in the wetlands and do nest in palms.

So what kind of a critter do I need to have so I don't have any of the three? Sounds like it needs to be able to crawl up a tree and under a garage door.:22yikes:

I live in Caroline and one of my neighbors had one of his Queen Palms cut down. When the tree fell over, two snakes fell out of the tree. The landscaper said it was common for snakes to nest in the Queen Palms.

They also nest in the oak trees.

Personally, I don't think snakes are more attracted to Queen Palms than to any other palms. We had 3 Queen palms in our front landscaping in Hunters Creek, but we never saw any snakes in or around them. My husband and I were both around them a lot, caring for the landscaping and my husband trimmed them, we never saw any snakes. We did see black racers in the butterfly garden in the back of the house.

Haaa, get mongoose or monitor lizard, it not a big deal they are harmless.

U can put soft aluminum around the tree about 24" high, they can't grip it to to up.

U can also paint it to match the bark color.

One other point about the garage is if it faces south and is warm, they will be attracted to it, where in a north facing garage it is less likely, but that just an opinion from a solar thinking person.

I don't have any palm trees, but I do have snakes - a few of them. Don't think you can avoid them here in FL. As long as they are harmless and not bigger than me, I can deal with them. :22yikes:

Snakes are no more attracted to Queen Palms than any other plant that mice like to shred and make a nest. You can see black snakes or rat snakes in any Palm. These snakes have no intent to bite you, and would like it best when you don’t see them, and will keep the rodent in check.

Just cut down all trees & shrubs, spray Roundup on any grass, drench all soil with DDT, pave everything with asphalt or concrete...and all those pesky critters should be history. LOL

This above, is right.

Scaring people out of planting palm trees, especially in front, makes for some barren, naked-looking streets. Palms are one of the reasons TV is so beautiful and resort-like.

We had 10 Queen Palms in Orlando and no rats or snakes however we did lose 7 trees within 8 years due to a fungus that no one knows how to cure.
Botanists at Leu gardens figure it came in with Hurricane Charley bvut no one knows for sure.
Once they start to die it will happen fast.
