As the end of this growing season approaches when is the best time to give a final hedge triming?

I have a September 2007 Daily Sun article written by Jerry Potter, a Central Florida gardener. He advised that September is a great month to plant and prune in our area. Stop pruning after October 15th; resume March 1st.

And when you trim, do it severely. Us Northerners can't get used to that and our shrubs get too bulky and overgrown. Once that happens it's much more difficult to get them looking good.
