There is now a short stretch of road between Wildwood and The Villages, approximately 368 feet long directly in front of the new County Seat building, that has recently been reduced from 45 mph to 25 mph. The change is very poorly announced, two signs a short distance apart, no lights or flashers of any kind. The signs are easily missed.

A ticket in this area is $256.00.

Please pass this information along, if you wouldn't mind. Either through word of mouth
or better signage. Thank you for your time and drive carefully!

I've seen the 25 MPH signs that you've referred to on CR 466A near CR 462, but I think the signs say "unless otherwise posted...the speed limit in TV is 25 MPH." Agree the signs are confusing. When you pass them again, please let me know if that's accurate?

The 20 mph sign posted here and all over "The Villages" are only for reference of a new law passed in Sumter County in 2012. You will see this sign on almost every street when you enter "The Villages" boundries (and around the area). It just warns what the speed limit IS when it is NOT POSTED.

So if you see no posted speed signs, in "The Villages" within Sumter County, it's 20mph folks.

Matt and Gail, Thank you for posting this information. I will be back in TV in two weeks, but since I only get to visit TV a couple of times a year, I can easily miss information about changes in speed limits.

I drove west today on 466A from Canal St to Powell Rd. I looked at every sign I passed and never saw anything except 45mph signs on 466A. Past the intersection of Powell I could see a sign reducing down to 35 as you enter the residential area of Wildwood. But nothing on 466A. I also closedly watched on Powell and that speed limit was 35mph all the way to 44.

Are we sure this is not another Villages Urban Legend? Has anyone actually seen these signs that reduce the speed limit? I was looking and did not see them.

I did not come back that way so could not look east bound. Would they have two different speed limits for east and west bound in the same area?

MLBellis, what direction were you driving on 466A when you got the ticket?

I would definately take that one to court. If they're doing that with a posted 35 coming out of wildwood and 45 at the the villages then there is definately some confusion in there sign posting or the officers interpretation of. A judge may vary well agree and toss the ticket and issue you a warning. In reality I think the officer should have issued a warning as well, I drive through there regularly but haven't been since this post began. I'm just wondering also if its a zealous cop trying to make his quota. Definately challenge it. Or worse case get a traffic lawyer and let them do it in your stead. I had to fight one once and rather paid $100 to a lawyer who got it thrown out than pay them 256 for something I know I didnt do wrong and thats why I fought it.

I drive that area frequently. I agree with M&G comments.

Not knowing at what speed the OP was cited, I'd contest a ticket for any speed of 45 mph and under. If cited, however, at 46 mph or higher....

The below notice was in our neighborhood community email update. It was posted September 30. This does not seem like something you would see in TV.

WATCH YOUR SPEED ON 466A!

There is now a short stretch of road between Wildwood and The Villages, approximately 368 feet long, directly in front of the new County Seat building, which has recently been reduced from 45 mph to 20 mph. The sign says Speed Limit 20, with The Villages under it. It looks just like the ones that announce speed limits on our side streets within The Villages, without the “unless posted” part. Police have been seen giving out tickets with a cost of $256.00.

I don't recall seeing other speed signs in Sumter County with "The Villages" printed on the sign. Something strange here. Are we sure these were posted by the county?

There are signs when entering Sumter County from all roads into The Villages that state the speed limit in The Villages is 20MPH, UNLESS POSTED OTHERWISE. On those roads where these signs appear, there are posted speed limits and on that particular section of 466A, the speed limit is 45mph. The 20 mph sign is an advisory sign of what the speed limits are in TV if there are no signs stating speed. Why someone got a ticket if going no more than 45 I don't understand. There is the possibility that the ticketing officer was incorrect and if the ticket lists a speed of 45 or lower, I'd fight the citation in court.

I got this email today:

For those of you who have read the e-mail (which has been blasted all over The Villages) about the recent Speed Limit Change on 466A, the referred-to happening was about 3 years ago, when 466A and Powell Road were under construction, and in fact tickets were written at that time.

So maybe it is not true anymore.

I think 20 mph in the villages is a little to slow my vehicle in gear at a idle goes over 20 mph ,they must have shares in brake pads.or really need the money to support there pd dept.

No different than a school zone.
The key is be aware of your surroundings that includes posted speed limits.

This was my initial thought when seeing the sign, but someone always knows of a "person who got the ticket" Another tempest in a teapot!

That new 20mph unless posted impacts very few roads within The Villages in Sumter County. There was a POA meeting where this issue was addressed and if I remember only 11 roads were truly impacted. There are posted limits in most areas, including neighborhoods where limits could be 15mph. That's the speed limit within our neighborhood. It was a lot of upset by individuals who didn't really understand what the signs said. Being a good driver means that attention is paid to all posted speed limit signs. People are not necessarily crawling around at slow speeds here in our community.

That sign on 466A has been there a long time and it is not a 20-mile speed limit. The posted speed limit on 466A is 45. The posted speed limit within the Villages is usually 35, unless it is posted 20 or whatever.

Specifically, the limit is 35 on main roads where the cart path is separate, such as Buena Vista, Morse south of 466, Stillwater between Morse and Buena Vista, and El Camino. Main roads where the cart path is on the road are 30. Neighborhood roads are 20 if unmarked, or less if posted as such. The only exceptions to this I am aware of are Rio Grande and Del Mar, which are posted at 25.
