The Sumter County Sheriff's Office said it appears that a woman accidentally shot her boyfriend in the groin area.

Paula Staier, 64, initially was unable to tell deputies on the scene on how Gary Kress, 69, was shot at her Links Court home in The Villages on Sept. 14, according to an investigative report. However, sheriff's officials said Thursday they eventually determined that the loaded Beretta 9mm handgun was being moved at the time it was discharged and confirmed it with the victim -- and no charges will be filed.

"You should always unload a gun before moving it," said sheriff's Maj. Gary Brannen.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies responded to the couple's home just after 11 p.m. on Sept. 14 where Kress was lying in a pool of blood with his head being cradled by Staier.

He had been shot in the left hip near the groin area and taken by air to a hospital.

However, a "despondent" Staier told investigators she was tired and couldn't recall what happened. She added days earlier, she had found her late husband's gun in the attic and placed it on a TV tray in the garage and forgot about it.

Staier added they had lived together, moved apart and were preparing to move back in together when the couple were going through some personal belongings in her home on Sept 14. She said it wasn't until she picked up the cat in the garage that she noticed the gun still on the TV tray.

Staier said she picked up the gun to move it inside the residence. She told investigators she could only remember a loud bang and seeing Kress on the ground, bleeding, moaning and in pain.

Hmmmm.

Sounds like someone was mad at someone.

By the way in this mornings Sun, there was an article about a man found dead in his golf cart near both Paradise Lake and 441/227. It was an apparent suicide. The man was not named.

Since the gun belonged to woman's late husband, I wonder if it was registered?

If not could that pose a problem for someone?

Why would it be registered? Florida does not require that you register handguns or long guns or shotguns.

If ANYONE has a firearm and doesn't know how to unload it or if it's even loaded, send me a PM and I will come over and check the weapon.

I've been a firearms instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center for over 15 years, and I have a Florida Firearms Instructors License. I was also a small arms instructor in the U. S. Air Force.

PLEASE if you don't know, send me a PM and a phone number.

Due to the increased costs of ammunition, warning shots will no longer be fired.

I am with you on that, story is not telling the whole or is that hole, story. :a20:

A good move to break-up as I feel this is a crime of passion to shoot someone in thre groin area.

Then again, maybe I watch too many cops and robbers shows.

It’s one thing to have a loaded gun in the house but it is another thing entirely to have it loaded, chambered, the hammer cocked, and the safety off because that’s how a typical 9mm Beretta semi would have to be to have it go off by being picked up by a novice with their finger on the trigger.

I find it hard to believe her late husband would have left the gun lying around in that state because you’d have to be crazy or totally ignorant to do so.

Most Berettas can be loaded and chambered but they require a substantial and intentional double action pull on the trigger to fire the first round.

So I’m not buying her story either.

My beretta can be loaded chambered without being cocked, it is DA first shot. that's double action for those not familiar, requiring a strong trigger pull to raise and release the hammer rather than the light pull of a cocked hammer.

even though I and others here own guns, I am absolutely stunned by the number of shootings reported on an almost daily basis. almost seems to be a good argument for strict gun control. if you have no idea what to do with a firearm perhaps you should not have had one in the first place. and why was it loaded if she professed ignorance? hmmm?

What would have registering have done to prevent this from happening? Just for your information, gun control is actually people control, has nothing to do with firearms, but a lot to do with controlling people.

If she hadn't had a gun.............

And those three people who got shot at the VFW....

I don't like guns and see no need to have them in this quiet peaceful community. I haven't needed one so far in my 72 years. If other people want to have them, fine.

If I ever feel I need one, I will change.

We worked very hard and didn't waste our money and were thrifty in order to live in communities that didn't have a high crime rate. We didn't steal things, do drugs and run with people who liked to shoot people. So far that philosophy has worked.

I think that second amendment rights are good.

I think a lot of people are overly fearful. I think a lot of people with guns think they are protecting themselves and their friends

I think a lot of things and I am allowed to type them because of first amendment rights.

If we all felt the same way about things, they would only sell vanilla ice cream.

I agree with Gracie 100%, however, we live in a state where practically everyone has a gun of one type or another and it's a low crime state; perhaps the lowest crime state. Hunting rifles, etc. are the norm.

Sad to say, even in low crime states, tragedies do happen. I'm recalling an incident where our high school teacher shot his wife while she was sleeping (she was a librarian); he was soon diagnosed with a brain tumor.
He passed away before trial.

Usually, it's unbalanced people that kill.......and simply careless ones that accidentally injure.

Or, those without a soul or respect for another human life.

Also, guns aren't always needed to do great harm, as another poster just mentioned.

Most recently, two very very young 13 year old boys used a mallet and an axe (?) on their 78 year old great grandmother who pleaded for her life.
These were such innocent looking kids. That poor grandma......it took both boys to pull the blade out of her skull.

Had she known what they planned, would she have let them into her home? Who would not let their own young grandson in??

So, there is evil in the world today. Kids and adults today are influenced by tons of violent movies and t.v. shows. It's about all that there is.
We can watch it and still remain sane...........however, not all can.

After those two young boys got the grandma's money and little bit of jewelry, they went out and enjoyed a pizza.......then returned to try and clean up the crime scene. Scary.

On second thought, maybe grandma does need a gun to "protect herself".

I know this thread is about a shooting in TV, but keep in mind that not everyone that owns a gun here does so for protection. There are plenty of recreational shooters that compete regularly in scheduled matches with all types of firearms. Heck, there’s even several bowling pin shooting leagues around here.

Gun ownership is a male dominated activity because it was ingrained in us from childhood. While most girls were making outfits for their dolls and buying miniature furniture for their doll houses, the boys were building forts and fending off imaginary outlaws with our cap guns and Red Ryder BB guns.

When I was in the Smoky Mountains this summer, I took a shotgun lesson at a Sporting Clays shooting ranch called Fowler Farms (http://www.fowlerfarmssportingclays.com/). Sporting Clays has been described as “Golf with a shotgun” because when set up properly the shooting stands are scattered around a large piece of land and the shooters in a foursome walk through the woods from stand to stand with their shotguns. At each stand, instead if teeing off, a button is pressed and a clay target is launche out of the woods to shoot at. Some of the older fellows actually showed up with their own lifted golf carts with knobby tires for the rough terrain. It’s a gas.
