Just recieved a call from "Sumter County" FOP for donation. The phone # was 321-635-8055. Area code didn't seem right so I told them "sorry not this year". So I googled the number.

I've gotten calls from them, yesterday and today but when I answered nobody spoke.
Calls are coming from a "boiler room" which means that at least 100 numbers are being dialed by a computer. When one is answered, it shuts off the calls to the other numbers and a human begins talking. Doesn't matter if your phone is listed or not. Calls are made in sequence to certain area codes and exchanges.

That's enlightening. It would explain why there are multiple hangups during the day, and dead messages on the answering machine.

I'm not sure that it is the FOP. If you call Sumter County Sheriff's dept. they will tell you that they do NO telephone solicitations. Same goes for FL Highway Patrol and EMTs around here.
These people have even called the Sumter County Sheriff's office asking for donations.
Just say no or just hang up. They make a lot of money (for themselves) from people who like to help out if there is a need. There isn't in this case.

Haven't seen him lately but that "Marine" guy collecting outside Walgreen's sets off my Hinky Meter.
