Hi all:
I have an HP G60-243DX Notebook PC with 4 gig. It's about 1 1/2 years old. Lately I've been having problems with it. I ran a Norton virus scan, Malwarebyes, System mechanic. It found nothing. We have Comcast for internet high speed.
Our desktop computer is not having these problems so I don't believe it is Comcast. What happens is I go to type out an e-mail in AOL or I'll go into TOTV and try to click new posts and it just sits there. On AOL it will type a couple of letters and then stop. On TOTV I'll use the scroll bar and it will jerk and move very slowly.
I have tried a new wireless mouse and it didn't act any differently. I have checked for processes running and have disabled all that happen during the day so I don't believe any updates are running, but that could be an option. There just aren't any showing up in the tray. I tried alt, control, delete and looked at the task manager and nothing will be there except AOL. I am running AOl from the AOL website and it works fine on our desktop at the same time. Any ideas?:confused:

You might look at a hard drive issue with your computer. I cannot confirm, but it looks like your computer is running a SATA hard drive. I recently had an issue (like yours) and replaced the SATA drive with a SATA SSD (Solid State Drive) and found the computer was back up to normal speeds. With what you have done (all the right stuff) you have almost narrowed it down to the hard drive.
Your 5400RPM hard drive could just be getting old, and slowing down on its seek and reads. Hope this helps! I have some great software for transferring your data if I can help!

You could try to do a defrag on your hard drive as that might speed it up.

This happened to me and it was the windows indexing service. It's supposed to run during idle time. But then what happened, I'd be idle, the thing would start running and it would take up 100% cpu. When it happens go to the Task manager and click on the Processes tab. Then sort by CPU and you can see what process is using up all your CPU. You can see what file is taking up all your CPU. I think the index service was cisvc.exe. If you see this file in the process, you can stop it.

Forgot to mention that it automatically defrags every week. Thanks for the idea though as it was a good one.

could it be google chrome.exe? It's listed 7 times in the processes list. The reason I got google chrome is that I was having problems with internet explorer.

Run MSCONIG and start unselecting things (one by one) on the startup tab. Might help also till you find the culprit.

Do you have 7 google chrome windows/tabs open? Are those chrome.exe using up the CPU?

I have disabled Google Chrome, installed Firefox. Firefox does the same thing as does Internet Explorer. As an earlier poster said, I might be looking at replacing the hard drive. I am now checking into the costs and sizes of hard drives.

Seems everything you are trying is internet based....ie. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.
Have you tried any of your other programs that don't use the net? Do they also run slow?
Purchasing a new hard rive might not fix your problem....maybe you have a problem with your network card or wireless antenna...
I think you said it was a laptop, so worst case, take it over to Best Buy and let the Geek Squad take a look at it...
Good Luck!

Good point. I went into my computer and did lots of clicking on MS Word documents and excel and power point files. Although it's not as slow as it is on the internet, there is definitely a delay in opening some small files. I found that triple and quadruple clicking was necessary to get the file open. This is similar to what is happening on the internet sites. I also find that I can hear the operating system struggling as I do this. I think I can install the new hard drive myself. I have a neighbor who can help me if I get into trouble with it. Thanks again!

Does the laptop connect to the internet wirelessly? I was just having trouble with my wireless system running slower than normal. When I did a speed test I found the download speed to be 1/6th of what ir was in July. I unplugged my router power cord for 1 minute and plugged it back in and the problem was fixed.

I clicked the link and did a few of the suggestions. The network driver is up to date. I clean my cookies and trash every week. There are a few more things to try which I will get to a little later. My internet connection speed was tested and is running 75% efficient. The download and upload speeds varied so much on the various tests that it was hard to nail it down. The only part that makes me think this isn't an issue is the fact that we have a desktop attached to the same connection and it is doing great with no slow downs. I have to wait for a while for it to start slowing down again before I check anything else. One poster offered me hard drives to try. I'm appreciate it greatly. I have to first make sure I've checked absolutely everything then I'll go down that path. Thanks again everyone.

I found this answer on the internet. Sounds like your issue.
a few days ago i had a similar problem whereby 4 to 6 instances of explorer.exe would load every boot. I noticed HKCU and HKLM entries in startup from msconfig which i know is not right so i did some sleuthing. Ended up finding a directory "c:\windows\explorer" which contained 1 file "svchost.exe". Zone Alarm recognized it as virus but wouldnt remove it. Just kept respawning instantly. Had to boot into safe mode, remove entries from registry, then delete said folder. Entries found in "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" and also HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\Curren tVersion\Run". Also removed all prefetch entries.

Thanks for the info. That was the case when I was running Google Chrome, there were 6 or 7 exe files for it. Once I switched back over to Internet Explorer this was not the case. There was only one entry. I think I will keep Internet Explorer as I like the way it works better anyhow. I have uninstalled Google Chrome and made IE my default browser. Thanks again!

Can you do a System Restore to a date when the problem didn't exist? You could on XP, but not sure if 7 has that feature. Your laptop seems awfully young to be having hard drive problems.

Before you spend $$ on drive, try downloading Spybot a free anti-spyware program, run it and see if it can find any bad stuff.
Good luck!

Chances are you have a virus infection on your computer. VCC has techs who go to the home for about $35 an hour and clean up slow computers. In addition, if it's something else, they'll diagnose it. Why guess?
Look under the Tech Help Tab.

Hi All!
I wanted to thank everyone who responded to my post about my computer slow downs. It got worse before it got better. At the end of the day yesterday it crashed. This morning it booted ok. I began troubleshooting it trying to think of anything I could do. I decided to check on Internet Explorer and tried to download an updated version. That was unsuccessful as I already had the latest version. Then I typed in the help screen to "repair internet explorer". That came up with a suggestion to "reset internet explorer" to its defaults. I did that and it was like magic!! It's back to better than great! I'm thinking an internet explorer update was the culprit that was not compatible with my windows vista. I also have discovered that my mouse wheel is skipping and ordered a new one of those. Easy fix $24.00. Thanks again to everyone!!:bigbow:

Hi Don:
My computer is fixed. Note my post above. Malware was my first thought. I run Malwarebytes software scans about twice a month and it came out as a clean scan most recently. I also subscribe to Norton antivirus live and have no virus. I also disabled unneeded start-up programs with the help of System Mechanic. The problem was an update to Internet Explorer 9 that was not compatible with windows vista because when I reset internet explorer everything returned to normal. Thanks for your offer of help.

Thanks for the link. If you see my post above, the computer is now fixed. I normally run malwarebytes, but it never hurts to have two anti-malware programs. Thanks again!
