Just moved into the Village of Fernandina and will be living here on a temporary basis for a year or two (3 mos here and 3 mos up North, etc.). When I check the prices of a lawn service, they want to charge $40 a month year round or $480 a year. I find this ridiculous for a postage size lawn that only has to be cut during half of the year.

I'd like to put stone over the entire lawn. Anybody have any estimates for me. At the rate of $480 a year, I figure it could be paid off in no time.

Do you pay for lawn service up north? I have a smaller lot here in the Chgo area and pay 38 per WEEK. And that is discounted! At 10 bucks a week. I think you are getting a bargain! But as I have not yet closed on my house in TV, I don't know what is customary either. Have you checked with other neighbors? Perhaps they would have more insight to pricing or can recommend someone to you? I certainly will be doing the same in the very near future! I wish you good luck!

Thanks asianthree for info. Can I just have it on the little lawn between shrubs and street and keep the lawn in the back of the house? How do you happen to know this, because I wouldn't know the first place to look for info like this.

Would you know the cost of putting stones just in the front of the house?

Call Stellar! I have a cottage in St. James & am a snow bird. They do my fertilizing & outside bug spraying & for 6 mo. they use a push mower to cut my grass @ $40.00 per mo.
If U are not in favor of this put out another post for lawn maint.
Also talk to your neighbors, one of them MAY do it when U are gone for a cheaper rate.

I think the Florida State Plant folks can help get that done, it comes under water conservation.

Don't try the bit about mowing, say water conservation you'll get further under the FL state rules.

i think florida lawns need mowing all year...more often in summer but at least every two or three weeks in winter...that's the price of the lovely green we are surrounded with all year :) i pay $30 per month to a great guy who does our whole neighborhood but he does not have any more time for any more customers :) oct is the month to sign on again...maybe he will ask for more :( i think he figures he balances out the months that are harder with the months that are simpler....good luck!

I'm with you...we paid 40 per week in Atlanta and the 10 per week sounds fair to me. Oh, yes, Florida lawns get mowed all year long and weeds are prolific even in winter. Stone doesn't solve all your problems if you are seasonal. Weeds still come up and have to be sprayed every few weeks with round up.
