A little while ago, our weather radio sounded an alarm. When I checked, it was for an "unrecognized" warning. Same thing happened last week. Haven't changed the radio settings, still for all three counties, for thunderstorm, tornado events. Can't see that the National Weather Service has issued any other type of warning....flood, tropical storm, hurricane.

At 10:05 the warning light is still on. ??? I've been warned, I just don't know for what!

I'm beginning to feel a little spooked! This weather radio thing happens to you and something unusual happened to us last night.

Yesterday we placed a Halloween decoration over our lamplight that looks like the giant doughboy in Ghostbusters. When it got dark the light came on at the normal time then.... for the first time it's ever happened, the light started switching to on and off on it's own about every 30 seconds or so and it has consistently done so without variation.

Today we went out and I temporarily removed the decoration and checked the light bulbs. Only one looked like it might be going so I replaced it and reattached doughboy!

Tonight at the bewitching moment, the light went on at the normal time then resumed the strange behavior of switching on and off!

Now you might think I'm getting a little premature in telling a Halloween story, but I'm not. It would made a good ghost story but this is really happening without explanation and if it stops after Halloween when we remove the decoration I'm really gonna start believing in ghosts.

Has anyone else ever seen a lamplight behave like this at any time? It's the first time I've ever seen it happen anywhere.

Thanks. Tomorrow we'll have to reset the radio and see what happens. Your time period corresponds to the time my radio went off and when the red alarm light finally dimmed.

Does sound a bit spooky! Does the doughboy light cover, cover the light sensor at all? I had a pumpkin head and a snowman head for my lamppost light, but the light fixture was just the wrong size a and that meant the cover was messing up the sensor. The head would shift with the wind, heck, with the breeze and the light would be on or off at the wrong time.....OR, you have Gozer hanging around in your yard.....eek!!!!!

My guess is that your lamp post light is controlled by a light-sensitive switch. When it gets dark, the light goes on. With the decoration over the light, there is enough light from the bulbs reflecting onto the switch to make it turn off. After about 30 seconds of dark, the switch turns on again. After about 30 seconds of light, the switch turns off again. And so on.

Mine went off early evening. I was in the room and it said that a weather station in Jacksonville issued a flood warning for Northern Marion County which is one of the surrounding counties I have programmed into the radio. It was listed as an "unrecognized" warning,

Scared the H*ll out of me as I was sitting right next to it when it went off.....

Here is a really neat weather program for free, that you can program for any state. Gives the location of the watch, warning etc.,

WXSpots - Severe Weather Now! Featuring WXWarn Free Weather Software! (http://www.wxspots.com)

When the weather radio goes off, check and see what is happening and where.

I have our other house location programed so that I can keep track of the weather where our renter is located. Works great.

My weather radio also had a warning of "unrecognized" . I first thought "missiles"?

A few months ago I was trying to reset my WR and pushed a few buttons. Thought I had it set. Next bad storm that come along it sprang into noise and action- Avalanche! Avalanche! Had to reset it
Who knew it came with all those strange warnings?

We are having the same problem. Unrecognized alerts are the only two we've had recently even when a bad storm causing power outages have been right on top of us.

I thought my radio had given up the ghost so to speak....now I'm thinking it has something to do with how the alert is being issued......and it seems to be for Marion County.

..."missiles".....very well could have looked like that.......

SpaceX launched at 8:35 p.m. Sunday Oct-07. from Cape Canavera,FL. The Cargo Re-Supply ( CRS ) Dragon Spacecraft is sending a payload to resupply the Space Station.

ONE of the NINE Stage 1 Merlin Engines lost pressure (Engine # 1) and an engine shutdown command was sent.....this caused the panels
designed to relieve pressure within the engine bay to be ejected at
one minute and 19 seconds into the flight.
In my humble opinion, the ejected panels MAY have caused an "unknown" weather warning when reflected on Doppler and conventional Radar.

...The Extreme heat of the 9 engines during Stage 1 liftoff MAY have returned "lightning" warning on some weather equipment. They have in the past . ( Lightning will show as heat on some systems ).

(On Septemer 29th a similar weather warning may have occured when these same engines were test fired .)
Just my "non-scientific" take on the "unknown" weather warnings.

There goes a good spooky story! Now if it continues when I remove the cover after Halloween, you're invited to the Ghostbuster's service call. If you get slimed by Gozer you can alway jump into our new pool and get deslimed!
