View Full Version : One of the Dangers of New Construction

Having recently moved into the new Village of Gilchrist, we are surrounded by new construction with home construction being started and finished every day.
We have unfortunately encountered one of the dangers of new construction - finding a nail and a drywall screw embedded in the tire of our car. Even worst, we found one of these items was so close to the sidewall that we couldn't patch the tire but had to replace it. Take time to look for these items in the roads around construction of any type, and if you can, pick them up to prevent anyone (maybe yourself) from running over them. If you must get a repair or a new tire, I highly recommend Tire Kingdom in Lady Lake on 441/27. They are courteous, efficient, reliable and have great products and personnel.
Other than that, we are having a great time becoming "Villagers !!"

Ouch! New tire - sorry to hear about the problem, Bob. We sometimes see nails and screws here and there in the construction areas. I always pick them up and ensure that they wind up in some type of trash container.

They do try to see that the debris is collected. In our new village I have seen trucks with a magnetic bar in front go through to collect nails etc. around the construction.

Gracie....when they were working down here we never saw anyone make an effort to pick up garbage, nails or screws. More than once I picked up handfuls and took them into the nearest house under construction and left them a pile .
Even our realtor was saying drive in the middle to avoid them...HAH. Told him that was where I picked up the vast majority!
Bob sorry about your tires. I know that was the greatest concern for me. Somehow we avoided it. Probably because of all those walks I took picking them up :( I wish you could charge the villages for a new tire.

I have an empty lot next to me in Sanibel and what has been happening is concrete trucks backs into the lot next and cleans their shoots making a cement mess all over the dirt. Sometimes the cement seeps towards the grass which we hope doesn't kill our grass or plants.

Same here in Charlotte every day I pick up trash, nails and screws. Got a flat on my golf cart and my neighbor got two on his truck.

It was the same over here in Sanibel after we moved in last January. I picked up a bunch of nails up and down the street. I too got lucky and didn't get any in my tires. Gracie says "boy howdy" and things get done!

I love cruising the new areas in my golf cart in the evening. In fact, I just got in from plugging a tire from my Tuesday night ride. I have yet to pick up a nail in my car <wood knocking>, but have had a few over the years in the carts. From Hadley, to Buttonwoon, to Sanibel to whatever is next. I have had nails from some of the finest places pop my tires:coolsmiley:

We walk nightly and more often than not we find nails and screws in the road. We feel that the construction crews are pretty irresponsible when it comes to keeping nails out of the road. We do pick them up as we see them, but there are so many areas under construction up our way, especially up and down Pinnellas where the construction crews travel to get to the new villages under construction. It will get better at some point, just have to be careful!!

You would think those pesky construction workers would pick up after their hammers.

Just look at the stop signs and lights were they turn you would not believe the nails and screws.Called the Villages once for the area at 466a was loaded with nails but they never came out with the magnet to pick them up.

Moved to Charlotte in January - one of only 4 houses completed in the entire area. What a mess! The construction workers left all their trash - both construction and personal - behind to blow all over the place. It was a nightmare (as anyone who knows me and heard me complain for more than 3 months will attest). Sorry to read that you had damage to your property. You must be very vigilant regarding the construction workers and their vehicles. It cost us almost $1,000 to repair damage caused, and the Warranty Dept. wasn't much help at all.
