Hey, at least it's not another poop thread. But have you ever had this problem, and if so, what is the proper way to address it? For the last four days there has been a little dog (I can tell by the bark) barking incessantly. It sounds like the dog is either out in the villa yard or on the lanai. He is really stressing out, like those fear-aggressive issues some small dogs have. We back up to villa walls, and the barking is coming from over the wall. I could probably take a walk over there and identify the villa it's coming from. It starts early in the morning and goes on all day long. Frequently it gets the little dog a couple villas down going too, but his owners pretty much bring that dog inside when he starts barking.
I am hoping this is a temporary thing. The owners may be having work done or something similar that is causing them to sequester the dog outside. However, if it is going to be a permanent thing, I don't think we should have to listen to that all winter long.
Aside from going over there and politely discussing this with the dog's owner--which I doubt would work because what kind of personality type would leave their barking dog outside all day to bother the neighbors?-- who is the proper authority to go to about the problem?
Again, I'm not going to jump on this. I'll give it a couple weeks or a month. But my dog told me he's getting a headache... ;=]

Why put up with it at all ? Call the sheriff's office, they'll send animal control. You are entitled to the quiet enjoyment of your castle.

All posters so far are right in my view, and you presented your problem so nicely C.
Why can't we ALL try to think about HOW what we we do or don't do affects others???
I haven't called the cops on any neighbors in a lifetime. No one wants to do that. But C is entitled to the enjoyment of her outdoor space too.
Maybe talk to Community Watch or deed restreiction? I think we have noise restrictions on the deed restrictions but I could be wrong.

In my entire life I have never turned anyone for anything, I always try to cut people some slack.
Did these people just get here? One of my neighbors just got in for the winter and their dog is barking like a fool, I figure it will settle in.
When we first moved here, the people next door put in a big palm tree, mine barked at it.
I kind of figure that we're on really close quarters here, it's just not the dogs. I have a neighbor whose grandchild plays the piano FOR HOURS. I don't know what that kid did with the lesson money-I suspect she spent it on cigarettes and beer.
If it doesn't let up, and it bothers you do the right thing and talk to them, turning them in will just seems wrong.

Make a digital recording and anonymously send them a DVD. Just say that you thought they might be concerned about what their neighbors have to endure all day, every day.

Poor doggy owners! If all else fails go to WalMart and buy a "Bark Off" for 10 bucks. (They are usually right at the register). I only had to turn it on one time for my dog! It hurts their ears when they bark but you can't hear it! Now all I have to do is show it to him and he won't bark!

Why won't all the dog owners out there with the dogs that are pooping on other people's property and barking admit you are causing alot of distress to your neighbors and you don't care. It is obvious by the amount of threads and posts that this issue needs to be solved by the powers that be. A barking dog is like water torture. It goes on and on and that neighbor can't enjoy what they spent their life savings on. Fair? I don't think so. Laws? Rules? Something to help us all is needed. I just don't understand why there are so many dogs here. Empty nest syndrome? As a community we must come together and find a solution.

As a dog lover, I would be more concerned about what kind of duress the small dog is in to cause the stress-related incessant barking. It's not the dog that's causing the problem, it's the dog's owners. You would be doing the dog and the owners a favor by having a friendly chat with them.

The powers that be who make the ultimate decisions about stuff like this and all stuff are the developers. This is NOT a democracy... This is a CDD form of government and you can make petitions and gather in groups and discuss and throw your tea bags in Lake Sumter and this is how it is gonna be. I would guess that welcoming pets makes this place a more desirable place to live for more people, since the Morse's seem to be able to evaluate the demographics of the potential market very well and there is NOTHING wrong with that.
If you want to vote on something, or change something, you need to seek a place that is NOT a CDD. I am pretty much satisfied with things here for the price and given all alternatives. No place is perfect.
Just sayin'. That is how this place is run.

I just don't understand why there are so many dogs here.
There are a lot of dogs in TV because residents get a lot of enjoyment out of having pets. And Deed Restrictions in most Villages allow two dogs per household. I don't understand what you don't understand.
Back to Connie's problem, why not do as Patty55 suggests and knock on their door and tell them their dog is driving you nuts? Or if you feel too shy to make face-to-face contact, why not leave them a polite note on their door suggesting their dog sounds distressed about being left outdoors all day. And could they please consider a Doggie Daycare alternative or some other solution when they're away all day, because barking dogs interfere with neighbors' quiet enjoyment of their properties.

They may leave to dog out when they leave the house. May not even know it is barking all day. May want to stop by and just notify them about what is happening. I would also be concerned that the homeowners are OK.

Nicely said, a compassionate solution. If you come from a place of concern, the homeowners will be more open to your comments.

Had this problem with two of a neighbors dogs. They let the dogs out for extended periods in their invisible fence controlled yard and the dogs just barked away constantly. Sent an email advising them of the concern. They responded and advised they had two new dogs and aware of problem and working on it.
When nothing changed I referenced the Marion County nuisance animal ordinance. It states pets can be considered as "nuisance animals" if they bark more than 15 minutes at a time and it can be heard on adjoining lots. It would warrant a visit from animal control. That was the end of the barking.
I see Sumter County has similar wording in their codes. Here's a link. Not sure of Lake but if you live there check that also.

i was thinking the exact thing, in those few moments of silence when I could actually think. The dog is absolutely stressed out. It was crying as well as barking, and at one point it was snarling.
As an update, I have noticed the top of a new palm tree sticking up on the other side of the wall. You know, the tips of the fronds having been cut off like some are when first planted. I had heard some shoveling going on initially, and so now I'm hoping it was landscaping going on and things will now calm down.
I still can't understand why they would put their dog OUTSIDE with the landscapers when it was obviously causing him such distress. But oh, well. At least now I know where the dog lives if this continues.
But thanks for all the solutions. Many of them made my day, most notably the "throw an alligator over the wall" idea! If you can laugh at a ridiculous situation...

Here is my take on how people feel about dogs here in TV. 80 percent like them. Five percent fear them. and the rest have had some bad personal experience with irresponsible dog owners or just don't like pets.
I haven't had a bad experience so I am in the 80 percent.
The reasons we love small furry folks are varied. We may miss the kids or never had any. It is lovely to see people care for their animals and GOOD if they expect them to behave nicely in society. Pretty much the same as raising kids. Nobody likes a spoiled kid with no rules, be it furry or human.
I have a friend who doesn't like cats. We love our cats. I try to understand why she doesn't like cats. I have tried to explain it to Mikey who is hurt about it. Harry doesn't care and Hershey is annoyed.
I know. But I enjoy thinking they are people.

But, but... cats ARE people! Every one of our 2700 cats was a person. AND, if someone came to our house who didn't like cats, that's who they zeroed in on.
I love our dog, but our cats were so much fun to watch. So self-confident, and impossible to get the best of. If you're loved by a cat, you are truly a worthwhile person.

Oh, my nerves. The POOR POOCH! I wonder what is up if the baby is crying/snarling/barking, etc, all day long. Someone needs to get the hairy eyeball on the dog and it's living conditions.
I would like to know what, if anything, the owners are doing for the problem. I wish I knew where it was as I would absolutely observe, formulate and discuss.
The owner(s) need to know and if they already do, (likely), they need to know that further action will take place if this does not cease. Please don''t enable the already awful behavior of NEGLECT. I wonder what the physical setup is for the animals protection from the elements and YES, Virginia, there IS a Santa CLaus and our DOGS DO COME FIRST sometimes.

I think this is an otherwise very well-cared-for, small, bark-a-lot dog whose owners are irresponsible to the neighbors. When the dog was making too much noise for them to bear inside, they put it out on the lanai and ignored the barking (and the neighbors' right to peace and quiet). Since the landscaping has been completed, the incessant barking has ceased, only to be heard a couple times a day for a few minutes, so it's tolerable.
However, I heard the owners out in their backyard discussing their next project! I probably will go talk to them if this happens a second time. It's not good for any of us, dog included.

As an animal lover I read this thread with interest.
It's been my experience that you can judge a person by the way their dog behaves.
Most keep their dogs in check and they don't lunge or bark as you walk by.
But there are always a few that have never put the time or effort into teaching their dog how to behave. They let them bark at all hours and some even let them poop on your lawn...and they ignore what happens.
Those few don't deserve to own a dog and I personally think the animal should be taken away and a good home found for them.
I always tell people that there is really no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners.

Perhaps the person works and is totally unaware of the constant barking, thinking it stops when they leave. Our renters had a dog that barked when they left. A neighbor told them and they then had to rotate staying with him so he wouldn't bark in the unfamiliar home. One neighbor, bless her heart, even dog sat so they could go out together. Just saying, ask them if they're aware it does this.
