View Full Version : Cheng's not up to par

We went to Cheng's tonight really looking forward to a good meal. We were really disappointed and are wondering if the restaurant has been sold and under new mgt or if they got a new cook. The wait staff was also new to us. The veggies were soggy and the rice was dry and tasteless. The lo mein was over cooked and the wontons were starchy as was the spring roll.

In the past we have enjoyed our meals at Cheng's but after tonight I don't think we will return when there is a much better meal elsewhere. I hate to see a restaurant go down in quality and hope that others will post if they have a better experience.

After saying how much we enjoyed Cheng's on the Chinese Buffet thread, I felt I should say something about tonight's meal. We did say something to the waitress and we left half of it on the table so I think they got the message. Too bad, as we can't afford to lose good restaurants in TV.

Our family had dinner at Cheng's this past Friday evening. We're regulars at Cheng's almost every Friday. But this past Friday we were disappointed because the food was cold. The current cooks and wait staff were brought in temporarily over the summer while the others recharged their batteries in China. They were supposed to be back in mid-November but they're still missing in action. Let's hope they come back soon and restore both the cooking and service that made them successful in the past. We're not quite ready to write Cheng's off yet but how many bad meals can you have before you stop going to a restaurant.

We were heading to Cheng's a few weeks ago...got lost and never found the restaurant. We ending up at Bamboo Bistro and it was really good. Good atmosphere, good service and the food was great.

Cheng's is on CR 466 next to Verizon and NYPD Pizza in front of Walmart's. Bamboo Bistro is good but it's not a traditional Chinese restaurant. It would be a real shame if Cheng's doesn't return to its former self.

That explains it. Hope they get back before everyone goes elsewhere. Hopefully the snowbirds will keep the business going when they get back. Koyame is our regular haunt now and I love the Pad Thai.

After a 3 week absence, we all went back to Cheng's last evening. The originals have not returned and it doesn't appear that they will be coming back. The service was good. The food was OK but not as good as it used to be. We need to start looking for another Chinese restaurant maybe in Ocala. I worked in lower Manhattan and had lunch in Chinatown once a week. So in retirement I'm still going through withdrawal. My family is not quite as attached to Chinese food as I am.

- ditto - from us too. Love the choice of either Thai or Chinese, and the staff are great. We are regulars now.

Went to Koyame last week and the food was wonderful. The vegies were crisp yet cooked, the shrimp were huge, the soup was delish, the restaurant was clean. Also, the service was terrific.

I know exactly what you mean. I worked downtown for many years and got hooked on the fantastic food in Chinatown. I'm in NY now and whenever I'm here my first meals are pizza and Chinese, not necessarily in that order.

Where is Koyame?

It's on 441 just a bit north of the hospital. I believe it's in the same shopping center as Ollie's custard, which is also great.

I rented right near the Mulberry Grove Plaza recently and didn't find this gem until a few days before we left. It was the best Chinese I've had in quite a long time, and I did try Koyame while I was there. I felt the food at this place tasted quite a bit better. Check it out!

Pretty ambitious menu. Is this take-out only or can you eat there?

As I remember, it is small but does have a few tables for eating in.

This looks great. The menu looks pretty much like we're used to. I'll definitely check it out when I get back home in a couple of weeks. Thanks

Does anyone know why Koyame doesn't carry pork products, like spear ribs?

We ate at Koyame. Gave it a C grade. Rather tasteless, marginal service.
