Anyone know where the fire was today? About 11:30 the sky smoke was very intense - somewhere around St. Charles I think. I hope everyone was okay.

Probably someone frying a turkey in oil outside.

Maybe it was a fried turkey gone awry.

Whatever it turns out to be, there was a LOT of smoke and many firetrucks responding. We were downwind of it and the smell was burning wood.

the fire was to the right of the 3rd and 4th holes at Cane Garden/Jacaranda. We were playing golf out there when all the fire trucks went by. Don't know much more than that.

I was looking out over Southern Star and that would be about the right direction .

Do not agree with those who make light of incidents that they have no knowledge of, only speculation. The fire may be of no significance, or it may be of intense unhappiness to those involved.

An increase in post count is not worth it IMHO.

Bad house fire, burned through roof with tremendous damage. I feel very sorry for the residents. Definitely not a laughing matter.

2030 Markridge Loop was destroyed today by fire. Family was not home at the time. Children and grandchildren were here visiting for the holidays. No one was hurt and nothing was cooking at the time. Cause of fire under investigation. Homeowners are devastated and are year-round occupants. Please keep them in your prayers. Heartbreaking situation.

Was this another of those golf cart fires?

Thanks for the information. A relief to know that no one was hurt.

To Golf-Tinker: I don't think anyone meant to be insensitive, but this was clearly a major fire and the first concern was for the safety of the occupants. Secondly, since this is such a closely knit and caring community, what can be done to help. And, lastly, could the cause of the fire be something that we should be aware of to insure our own welfare.

Alluding to the desire for an increase in post count sounds a bit ridiculous to me. I wasn't aware that posting a message had become a contest to see how many responses it evoked.

Clearly not golf cart. Garage was fine and most of the exterior damage and hole in the roof were on the opposite side of the house.

I am sure that any cause that posters come up with is just pure speculation. One poster said the garage was fine so the cause was not a golf cart. The family was not home but children and grandkids were visiting. A candle left unattended like kids sometimes do? Again, just speculation.

No gas lines in that area of The Villages. Maybe an electrical short in an small appliance? Again, just speculation.

Glad no one was injured.

When you consider just how many of our electrical devices are actually on 24/7, it is almost a surprise that we don't see more of this. Even your TV, when off, is not really off, just standing by.
Thankfully the people were not in harms way.

This fire was on my street. Neighbors said the fire started in a guest bedroom near the back of the home. Family had left to go to Walmart to get something for the grandkids when the fire broke out. A neighbor called 911 and then the owner's cell phone to tell them their home was on fire. No cause established yet but insurance rep was at the home before 8pm.

Then a couple of neighbors stepped forward. The first told the homeowners that he and his wife were leaving today for a 10 day trip and told them to move onto their home. A second neighbor said they were leaving on Dec 10 for a month and offered their home for that period which would allow the fire victims to spend the holidays with family here in The Villages. As usual sometimes tragedy sometimes brings out the best in people.

In what village is Markridge Loop located? It seems there are more house fires per capita than in other places????

We have only been here since June and this is the 3rd house fire I know of. Does seem like a high number? Anyone have the facts on this?

In an area with 80,000+ residents, you will have fires. So, please don't think it's something that happens that frequently or is an exceptional high number.

Let's all be grateful there were no injuries. Homes can be replaced.

Markridge is in Pennecamp BUT we are off Abordale off St Charles .....the opposite side of St Charles from the rest of Pennecamp Village which confuses everyone including the newspaper today that printed a photo (of the side of the house that was not damaged which was weird) and the caption said we were in St Charles. We wonder if the reason it took so long for the fire dept to arrive was confusion of our locale. I've been concerned of mixups since an Arbordale (St Ave Rd Ct????) is in the villas down in either Tamarind Grove or St James and we are off of Abordale. Abordale/Arbordale could be a life threatening situation for Rescue.

I believe all anyone is interested in is whether or not that there is some common defect that maybe causing these fires. No one wants to see a house burn down. I don't believe that even though no one was hurt that the attitude should be at least they can rebuild. Stop and imagine if it was your house and everything you own for the past 40 years is now gone. It is a pretty horrible thought. See if you have that attitude at that time.

I thought the other 2 big fires were started in the garage either by a car electrical problem or gas cart charger. This garage has no damage and cars were not home at time of fire. Garage was not even singed. As of yesterday afternoon owner still waiting for report from state fire marshal. He was seen there Friday morning but owner was not there at the time.

We have successfully helped to re-house the owners and our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult transition.
