I just got in from cleaning up leaves from this tree we have in our backyard for the second time in two weeks. Had I been more vigilant it should have been the fourth time in four weeks. I look up at the tree and it still has a lot of leaves and about half of them are brown.
I don't know what kind of tree it is but it is the only one that I see like it in my neighborhood and it is the only one on my block that drops it's leaves.
Bottom line is that I'd like to have it removed if the cost is reasonable. It's about 49 inches in circumference at it's base.
Can anyone recommend someone who does this?
Do I need permission from the Villages to get it done?
Do I need a permit from the county or town? (I live in Lady Lake)

Check your deed restrictions. I'm in Sumter and have to get TV permission to take out any tree 4" or greater diameter.

If a tree that big was left with homes constructed around it, it's almost certainly a live oak, a valued and extremely protected tree in Florida.
Your deed restrictions limit the removal of trees other than some immature ones. Removal of a tree as big as you've described would definitely require approval by The Villages, and it probably would not be granted. If it is a live oak tree, it would also require approval by one or more state agencies, also unlikely to be granted.
Violation of deed restrictions are legal restrictions not to be dealt with lightly. Violation of regulations protecting various kinds of trees is a criminal offense and very expensive. Be careful and do your research.

If and when you find you can remove it, here is the contact info for the people who helped us with a tree that was uprooted, Bonny & Ruben Rodriguez 352-308-7474. Call them they might be able to answer your questions. Of course, contacting the authorities before starting is the best advise.

You will find the 4" rule in your deed restrictions.

Be careful and do your research.Contrary to popular belief, no species of oak tree is protected by the State of Florida. My neighbors and I have confirmed this with the UF/IFAS Extension. We did so about a year ago because of our concern for mature oak trees behind our lots. Coincidently, I was at a meeting tonight with Lloyd Singleton from the Extension and reconfirmed this.
However, TV deed restrictions and county ordinances may require an approval process that must be followed.
