View Full Version : Bonifay is a Bad Neighbor

Recently the Bonifay Country Club has started to have a loud band playing on Two nights a week. The music is so loud that we can not sit on our lanai and enjoy the evening. We were told when we bought our lot that because Bonifay is so close to houses that they would never have live, loud music. Now that all the lots are sold they have gone against what they said before. Does anyone know who I should complain to?

I'm wondering who told you that Bonifay would never have loud music. :22yikes: Unless you have a written promise from a Village Official, I think you're out of luck. I don't think there are any guarantees if you buy near a Rec Center/Country Club/Town Square. Pickleball and line dancing in the early morning, music, parties and traffic at night. It goes with the territory.

When I was looking for a house 3 years ago, I looked at a great one near the Bacall Rec Center. I could hear the THWACK, THWACK, THWACK of pickleball games and the real estate agent said I would get used to the sound of it and not even notice after a while. Yeah, right! I decided not to buy that one.
Do not believe what real estate agents tell you - or don't tell you - about a property. I have friends who bought in Chatham and the real estate agent never told them the sound of the trains would be so loud. They moved to Caroline within 1 year.
As for a real estate agent saying that Bonifay would never have outdoor live music, my friend, you are out of luck. Unless you have some written guarantee stating that fact - absolutely nothing is on your side. Enjoy the music - dance - have a couple more glasses of wine - the music will stay.

but...I think those neighbors called the Sheriff and the music was shut down due to the noise ordinance. Someone correct me if I am wrong. There was a big fuss over the people who liked to go there and hear it and the people close by who didn't want to hear it.

Gracie,
When you lived in Hadley, did you hear the morning noise from the Odell Rec Center tennis and pickleball courts?

We live about 3 blocks from Odell Rec Center...when the windows are open one can hear the "twack, twack, twack" from the pickleball courts. We don't think too much of it. When we lived up north our lot cornered with a city park that also had a tennis court, which was right in that corner. We could hear the early a.m. players quite well. We never called anyone nor complained as we knew the park was there when we built our house there.
As for the Country Clubs...that too is a fact of life...the music. However, I think they stop it "early" as I recall. Say like 8:00 or so. I have to wonder about folks who live near the pools...I'd bet they hear folks (families) playing in those as well. That all being said...I've heard of folks moving once they figured all this out.

If you have a problem it seems you live close by why not go over and talk to the manager face to face. I know several days a week the manager is on property. As another poster said the music stops early which is in the ordinance.

There have been posts about loud music from the squares, the country clubs, loud noise from CR 466A cars ,the garbage truck making to much noise, the train whistle can be heard, golf balls hitting homes along the golf courses, the sirens etc. We live in a quiet community. Coming from up north I don't find this noisy at all. If I sit in the Lanai I hear the pickelballs,I hear the train, the garbage truck etc. Up north I heard it in the dead of winter in my house with the windows closed and the TV on. All I can say is be careful where you buy and look at what's around you.I wish I could have bought on a golf course or by the CC. I to like to listen to the music which stop early. I was all the clubs would have music. I know my next stop will be dead quiet and I'm in no hurry for that. So in the mean time I'll enjoy the noise we have hear. My last comment on this topic.

when we bought our cottage there was a house at the other end of the block with extended garage and 3 bedroom by 2feet. We didn't buy it because there is a rec center going right across the street, so that pickle ball noise was out, so we bought the house at the other end of the block with out the extra 2 feet

Jennifer Paar VP of Sales & Marketing. The only way to have any real impact is to have several other neighbors with the same complaint....what you were told by sales person + loud music + manager's response (if that is in fact what her response was).

I don't understand the fascination with complete quietness.
If the music was playing beyond a reasonable hour like 9pm, then I could understand your frustration. Plus, as you said, its ONLY 2 nights a week. Did you not go to the country clubs when you were on your lifestyle visit and see what was going on in them? The Daily Sun advertises the goings-on in all the rec centers & country clubs, so the noise should not come as a surprise to you.
People are out having fun -- dancing, laughing, enjoying their twilight years -- and you want to put a damper on this because you can't talk to your spouse on your lanai. Go inside and talk, or come out and enjoy the fun!

The Villages is not advertised as a quiet retirement community but rather an ACTIVE retirement community. We came to this one because it was obvious it was not a couch potato style. Part of the visit experience is music on the squares and packed country clubs etc.

I really don't have strong personal feelings about the loud music at the country clubs, but I bet I would if my house backed up to one and I had to listen to it while (1) trying to enjoy a quiet dinner at home, (2) sitting on my lanai to enjoy the peace and quiet of the evening, (3) trying to have a conversation with family and friends, (4) taking a nap, (5) trying to get to bed early on a particular night, (6) nursing a headache, (7) watching television or listnening to the radio, or (8) showing my home to a potential buyer. I'm sure all of us would feel the same as the Bonifay neighbor if, instead of a Country Club, it were your next door neighbor booming high decibel music on their lanai with speakers pointed toward your home. It would be incredibly annoying, and eventually you'd call the cops and be thankful for the noise ordinance. In the case of these residents, they just happen to be a neighbor of Bonifay.
Fortunately, there is a solution that can satisfy both. Keep the noise ordinance in force in residential areas, but allow people to party hardy, long and loud in other areas where there is no residential area, like the town squares, commercial areas, or special set aside areas just for that purpose. I'm like you in that I don't want to shut down the party at 8:00 PM, but I don't want a party in my back yard every night either, and I want to be respectful of all my fellow residents in The Villages.
I think it is possible to solve this problem so that everyone can be relatively happy.

I believe when Mallory CC had complaints they turned the speakers towards the golf course away from the homes and this seemed to help. If the manager doesn't care about his neighbors that's a shame. Try that approach, go one evening and see which way the speakers are pointing, maybe he would give it a try.

I have friends who bought a home close to Lake Sumter Landing because they wanted to be able to walk to the Square. Now they complain about the noise and traffic. If you buy near a noisy area, you should be aware that the noise may not always happen at times that are convenient to your schedule.

We bought a lot on Allaire Loop on the golf course across from the pump house. When we bought the lot the course was completed but they pumps weren't running. We came back for the design meeting 4 months later and the pumps were running all the time irrigating trees and were a lot louder than I though they would be. We stopped by the lot early morning, mid day, late afternoon and at night and they were always running. Changed to a different lot without a pump house in sight or within hearing. I won't mind the sound of the sprinklers or lawnmowers because I expect them and they won't be continuous. It's been almost 2 months since we switched and the old lot is still not sold.
When we were looking for a lot the distance from the pickleball courts was a consideration. Even if I take it up I wouldn't want to hear it all day. Same with music, I like it but I don't know if I'd like it every night.

I grew up in the country..My parents' home had 10 acres of land, and we were sided by farm pastures, so I was used to the quiet and I still enjoy it, so I can appreciate the poster's desire to have a quiet home. However if you're looking for a quiet space buying a home that's close to a club/saloon doesn't seem like a good choice. It's sort of like buying a home next to a fire station and then being upset every time the firehouse siren goes off.

Sometimes the weather is a factor. We are in Caroline. Most times we can barely hear the group at LSL. But when the weather is dry and/or there is a north wind, the sound carries to the extent we can hear it inside the house.

I once lived in a home with railroad tracks literally right thru the backyard. I got used to it and loved it after a while.

I once lived in a college town. The next door neighbor rented his property to a Frat House. Then we had a Garage Band move in across the street. Then there was the boom-boom music from the cars going by all day. We came to TV for peace and quiet because we are shell-shocked and trying to recover.

If you read the thread that Gracie linked to in post #9, you will see that a similar situation regarding outdoor music at Havana CC played out in 2009. And if you skip to the last couple of pages in that thread you will see that the end result was Sumter County officials decreed that the music was permissible until 10pm as long as it stayed within the ordinance decibel limitations.

If the original lease did not specifically prohibit music outdoors then there is nothing that can be done. The Havana lease did not allow outdoor music and that is what finally ended the music. As far as Bonifay is concerned, until what 'wee hours of the morning' is this music being played? I bet it is not after 9 pm!

I know I said I was done with this topic but, I've been there on music night and music afternoon. There is a LARGE crowd which brings in money for Bonifay and the Developer. The band sets up under the covered portion between the restaurant and the pro shop by the front entrance. The speakers point over toward the pro shop. I've sat at the far end seats at the bar and the music is NOT loud.It stops by 8:30 at night at the latest. As for you being told no music, well the people behind the new Medical Center on 466A weren't told that was coming and now there are 2 more coming. As others have said you buy by an airport the planes are noisy, you buy by a fire house the siren blows, you buy by a golf course you get golf balls. The squares play until 9PM and draw a lot more noise then the clubs do. I wish all the clubs played music as long as it stops before 9PM I don't see a problem. If you had a noisy neighbor or one who watched TV outside he to has a curfew and as long as the curfew is followed and the decibel level is where it belongs they're legal.

the useful info is make note of what is around where you choose to live.
A complaint tlike this in no way should have an effect on the decision to move to TV because it only represents less than half of one percent of 90,000 folks.
The other 99.75678 of us think the way it is is fine.
You want to be on a golf course, near a country club, near a pool near a paddle ball court or even a railroad track....you are opting in for what comes with such a decision.
By the way if it is in the wee hours of the morning you can bet it ain't a Villages owned, operated or leased establishment.
Enjoy the fact that you are still vertical and able to hear and if it is really unbearable do like so many other residents....now that you are educated in the lifestyle, move to a location that suits your needs.

The problem with that analogy is that you pretty much know that airports, fire stations, etc. will create noise. However, if one were to do due diligence about noise/music at the country clubs around TV, one could easily believe that outdoor music is not allowed. While I'm not familiar with every country club in TV, I can only think of one that has outdoor music, Mallory, and it seems to be only during the "happy hour" time of day. All other clubs that I'm familiar with (including Havana) either have no music or have it indoors.

Absolutely. If you see a country club, just assume there will be live entertainment. If you see train tracks, just assume trains will be rolling on those tracks. If you see a sink hole in your neighborhood, just assume your sinkhole insurance will be canceled pronto. That way you're never surprised or disappointed.

Can you imagine the audacity of that original poster complaining about such a minor thig as having to put up with loud music. There you go again anoher of those pesky resident whinners. The OP is probably one ofthose dum dhere fulltime residents referred to as elitist frogs. so what if the OP paid better than $600,000 to $750,000 plus for a home. I continue to find it troubling that so many people on TOTV are judgmental.

We live off Bonifay Path and hear nothing from Bonifay GC.
While we have not gone yet on a Friday night (but will in the future) our neighbors get a huge table for around 24 and enjoy themselves immensely.
Yes, depending on where you live ANYWHERE in the USA you might have traffic, airplane noise, trains, music etc.
Work around the music by enjoying it for free (no drinks/ dinner at the club) or go to a movie or out for dinner when the music plays.
Better yet; grab a few neighbors; go up and enjoy all the fun like everyone else.

Rodie: I think most of us appreciate your situation---plus the concern of your neighbors. I would get my neighbors that are concerned about the music and ask for an appointment with the manager/principal of Bonifay. Perhaps there is some compromise that can be worked out. Location location very important when you purchase in TV or any other community. Good luck.

That's great! I'll have to get back over there and check it out. Personally, I would love it if I could sit on my lanai and hear a live band...I'd probably plan my neighborhood parties to coincide with it.
Now, that's the kind of attitude I like..:crap2::pepper2::MOJE_whot:

Haven't read the entire thread yet, but I remember a few years ago when those that bought near Havana CC........did the complaining and I thought the same thing.......Entertainment brings people who spend $$$$ which keeps the CC people working........
I agree with you 100%

When my husband and I decided to Build on a golf course my mother in law said that we would not want to be on a golf course because of the early morning mowing and maintenance noise. We thought about and made the decision to still build on a course. Almost 7 months later we are not bothered by mowing or maintenance noise because we run a portable air conditioner in our bedroom so all outside noise is drowned out. Even if the air conditioner were not on we are still not bothered by noise from the course. In fact, when the course is closed a few days a month for maintenance, we really miss the sound of carts pulling up to the tee and people laughing and having fun with the game. The golfers even kid with us when we are out on the lanai about not watching their golf swing! We really enjoy being on the course. So, If we would have listened to my mother in law, we would have missed out on an experience of a lifetime. Everyone has to weigh the pros and cons of where they live. A kissing lanai would have been the kiss of death for us, but to some folks they have no problem with it. To each their own.

You would need a calculator to add up all the over 55 communities in Florida that are quiet and peaceful. The Villages is advertised as a loud, laughter filled, sports filled community, with constant music and dance going on right into the night.
I might also add that even on this site, you will see the offer from folks living in those quiet locations asking to trade for a village home.
My Point is: If you are not happy here, it is easier to get out than it is to get into The Villages.
I believe there are 10's of thousands of residents that came here for all these reasons that seem to annoy a very few.
I would ask, please leave for a more suitable QUIET location and leave this noisy place to vast majority of residents that truly love the chaos. LIKE ME!!!!

I would like to think we are all old enough, and maybe even mature enough, to have enough sense to look around when we are buying a home and determine what outside influences migh affect us and make our decision based on those facts, but.... guess it is easy enough to get caught up in the excitement of TV to miss something. I hope the CC can remedy the situation to both appease the neighbors and continue to play music for those that enjoy it. Compromise is the best for both worlds.

When we bought here, we were told it never gets cold.
It's 4 degrees in northern Vermont this morning.
Your "cold" is balmy to us. Enjoy it. Truly.

Hi
We are building in bonifay on a golf course lot and wondering if we will also be bothered by the loud music? How about other noises like pickle ball or line dancing. Has that been a problem? Where are you located in bonifay, we can actually walk to the club and thought that was a selling feature

The music plays two evenings per week and ends at 8:30. It is music not Karaoke. People dance, eat, drink and have fun, If it's country music you might see line dancing. As for pickle ball not from the CC. I live close to a rec center and when I sit in the Lanai I hear the pickle ball and I'm glad because that means someone is enjoying themselves and using the facilities we pay a fee for. I wish I could have afforded a lot by the CC, or golf course because I enjoy the music and then I could walk home after partaking of food, fun and beverages. Don't worry about it sit back, relax and enjoy life,

I posted once earlier and my only point was that the OP has every right to express an opinion and to assert dissatisfaction with loud music. While some may come here to party hardy many move here for peace and quiet.
I live on a country club golf course and most times its complete silence. I do hear the mowers on the course but then I hear the mowers cutting my neighbors lawn. I sometimes hear a train in the distance but I love the sound of trains. I love music and I loved to dance but I have outgrown much of that and loud music is well just loud. So I reserve my judgment here and offer the OP my understanding
