What do you due, if anything, to protect water pipes and sprinkler systems when the temperature goes below freezing? Does anyone know of a problem with frozen pipes?
Thanks

It has never gotten cold enough long enough to freeze the pipes in the ground or the garage. I don't do anything.

I certainly hope so! Thought we left all that behind in Michigan.

If house is IN the Villages...
..... your home watch person will ....usually just let the water trickle a tiny bit if a many day freeze is predicted. (moving water wont freeze.( up to a limit ...... ZERO F ..ok ....... 40 F below, not so much.)
Can't think of any time in the last 8 years The Villages had a HARD 72 hour continious freeze. (Day and Night). Plus your furnace would have to fail.

IF up North, Much different story ...

If leaving for extended period........
.................Terlits got RV anti freeze in the tank and bowl. After water was shut off at the source and terlits were flushed.
................ ALL faucets were left in a 1/3 open position.

All terlits and sinks and dishwasher had 5 gallon continious flow limit hoses from the wall to the fixture. That way the max water on floor was 5 gallons. Even if someone turned the water back on. Of course you do want to hire a home watch. MOST insurance companies will not pay if the claim is not reported in a certain period of time. These limit hoses are available at Home Depot. The dishwasher and Clothes washing machine gets a quart of RV anti-freeze in the bottom and a MOMENTARY (one second) start to get RV anti freee to the pumps. Then another quart on top. Unhook your washer and dryer hoses from the wall. Drain the pipes. Drain all pipes in the house. Plus ALL traps get RV anti freeze also.

DO NOT FORGET...... The ICE MAKER hose to refrig has to be drained. Be sure to pour a little vinegar in feed hose to ice maker and seal BOTH Frig inlet and pipe with blue painters tape....to prevent mold and bugs from nesting in them.

Irrigation was always blown out with Compressed AIR, one station at a time.

If we are going to have a hard freeze I usually throw a blanket over the pipes by the green box for the sprinkler system. I also have foam pipe insulation wrapped around those pipes. One year we had a freeze for a few days and half the neighborhood had the valve at the top split. When my guy came to fix it we had to wait for about a week to get the part because so many had split.

It takes more than an overnight lower 30's or upper 20's cold snap to cause problems with pipes and such

going on 9 years and during that time we have had a couple of winters with extended cold spells of dropping to the low 20's for a week or two. But that usually happens during the dark hours with the other 18 hours well above feezing. Never any problems with hose bibs or pipes.

New to TV residents with pools, make sure you run your pool and or jacuzzi during temps below 35 degrees. If you have a controller on your system make sure it is set with winter mode enabled. Then it will run the pumps that need to run and when.

Also related, when doing your landscaping be sure to ask for winter hardy plants. Yes tropical plants will grow just fine here.....until the temp goes below 32, then depending on how low the temps get you could loose them all.

we are new to this Florida weather here. Hot and cold minute by minute. But I hope we left the hard freezes behind.
