Wed, Nov. 28 -- Tonight, at 10:59 ET, is the drawing of the Powerball winner.

This mega lottery contest covers 42 states (FL included), Wash. DC and the US Virgin Islands.

Odds of winning the $550 million jackpot tonight are 1 in 175 million. You are more likely of becoming an astronaut (1 in 12.1 million), or being killed by falling airplane parts (1 in 10 million).

So why do people buy Big $ lottery tickets? In hope of the dream come true. As they say in baseball, you cant get a hit unless you swing the bat. Accordingly, you cant win the lottery if you dont buy a ticket. Meanwhile, Forest Gump would probably say, Stupid is as stupid does.

ps: Kathy and I doubled are odds of winning Powerball this weekwe bought 2 tickets! <g>

If I win, The first thing I would do is buy a home in the Villages. To me anyone that ownes a home in the Villages is already lucky.

I don't play the lottery regularly, but when the jackpot gets really big ('cause you know, a few million really wouldn't change my life!), I always buy one ticket. Then, I spend hours thinking about what I would do with that money. Like others, the first thing on my list is to buy a house at TV, but I might get a slightly fancier one than I would otherwise! You can't win, if you are not IN!! Good luck to everyone!

We are in for a $20 investment split with a friend. It's fun and certainly won't put us in the poor house.

The odds with 2 tickets didn't change; they are still 1 in 175 MM, all you did was double your chances. Though if I remember my statistics class lectures, on a $2 investment you would need a payout of $350MM to statistically break even on the 1 to 175MM odds (e.g. it would cost you $350MM to buy one of each combination and thus have a winner.) So a $2 bet is is statistically a good bet with the current jackpot, assuming there are no splits. Then you pay about 1/3 in taxes .... so maybe not???:22yikes:

By the way, I bought one ticket and have reserved a Brinks truck to stand by. Positive thinking, you know :pepper2:

1 ticket, and you're in.

0 tickets = no chance of winning.

If you win, and if you only walk away with 300 million after taxes and if you can get a 4% return, then:

You will make 12 million a year interest
Just to spend the interest, you would have to spend 33 thousand dollars a day, or 2 thousand dollars every hour of the 16 hours you are awake each day.
All that money without ever touching the principal.

Maybe the Powerball winner from TV will become the new 'Parade sponsor' at the town squares!

I didn't win...again, but I don't buy tickets either.

Second time I lost this month.

But other than that, I'm good. Real good. I live in The Villages.

Winning numbers: 05-16-22-23-29, Powerball 6.

2 winners. Total jackpot: $587 million.

Also, 8 won $2 mil., and 58 won $1 mil.

To the winners, a BIG CONGRATS!

To the non-winners, join the Chicago Cubs in "...maybe next time."

Because I truly comprehend trying to beat 175,223,510 - 1 odds I wouldn't dare throw away any amount of money to prove this!! Just writing 10 possible combinations on a piece of paper (at no cost) and checking them against the winning numbers makes me a whole lot happier when I realize that I had 1 number on three separate ticket picks. I lost but I still have the bucks in my pocket. Just my personal observation.
