I have an iPad 1 and would like to take advantage of downloading eBooks, other than those from iBooks. For example, the public libraries. The message I get is that I don't have the right operating system. Are there any eBooks that are available for iPad 1?

Yes, you just need the apps.
Just go to the app store...search for ebooks....several apps will appear...kindle, nook, free ebooks and more. Once you download the apps to your ipad, you can go to the kindle or nook or amazon website and download the books.

I use the Overdrive app from The Villages library to download ebooks. Just go to library and sign up. As I am a fast reader I was spending a fortune on ebooks for my Sony reader. I use the library for my ipad. They also offer formats for other readers.

I've never personally used this before, but I have heard good things..
It's a program called Overdrive, and with it, you can Download eBooks and audiobooks from your library directly to your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch!
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/overdrive-media-console-library/id366869252?mt=8
If you need help installing it, setting it up, and/or using it, we can help you. We can actually(at your request) remotely control your iPad for you and do a remote session to help you with it.

CTGolfer, yes, your iPad 1 can be used to download ebooks from a library.
You need a library card from a library that has ebook lending.
Here are links to the Help section of 2 local libraries that lend ebooks:
Sumter County Library ebooks (http://sumtercountyfl.lib.overdrive.com/92D6B48D-507E-49E8-81E2-219289F3E984/10/1004/en/Help.htm)
Lake County Library System (http://mylakelibrary.lib.overdrive.com/DE275968-92F2-48E2-AE0E-E3371A1EF713/10/836/en/Help.htm)
Good luck & enjoy!!

There are tons of books u can get on torrent sites,,, many are free open source that the author is trying to promote his book to get the message out .... If u email urs elf the book in ePub format u can open it directly into iBooks without using iTunes...

I am a member of two unrelated libraries. I use the Overdrive App on my iPad to download books from one library. Can I add a second library or will that "wipe out" the first library stored info?

You don't really believe that, do you? Almost everything on the torrent sites is pirated!

Amazon Best Sellers: best Kindle eBooks
Amazon post 100 free books a day that can be downloaded. Also, you can become a prime member (very inexpensive) and download many books free or for a very low price.
I bookmarked this link so I can look everyday. Happy reading.

Happy to share, especially when it comes to ways to enjoy books! eBooks are amazing, although I still like paperback and hardcover too :-)) Libraries are icing on the cake with lending all types of books.
