View Full Version : Why do fewer men dance than women?

Hi all, I'm at TV temporarily buying a place. As a dancer, I notice how many women dance compared to the men and it is usually so everywhere I have been. I'm wondering from the guy's view why there aren't more dancers? Is it intimidating? Doesn't seem fun? Too much social risk?
Maybe it's the responsibility of leading?

It's so simple. Women enjoy dancing because of the music, rhythm and exercise. Men like to watch women and drink and we can do that better by staying on the sidelines. So both win. :D

LOL! You could be holding her in your arms but you would have to put the drink down. I can see why that is a problem....

Men dance less because they have less wiggle room with more wiggle. Now, would you really like to see this dancing? If so, let me know when you'd like me there! :1rotfl:

At least for me personally, skyguy's picture pretty much says it all. Having always been large, it was always embarassing. One of my worst childhood memories is moving to a new school in fourth grade and the first week there being forced to learn to square dance in class. hey it was Arkansas. It was harder to dance because we didn't have any shoes.

Frankly, most men don't dance as well as women and thus are much more self conscious about it.

I would tend to think that women learn to dance at an early age as they want to be more socially acceptable. Boys tend to be into doing sports.
Most guys learn to dance when they get interested in girls. Some are not good at it and find it difficult to navigate. They don't tend to think like it's exercise as opposed to the traditional exercises.
Since women have started much earlier than men and, they are much better dancers. They are men who are the exception to the rule but certainly are no Fred Astaire's. Unfrotunately, That's why women are always looking for someone to dance with, (good dancing men are in short supply).

I just had a talk with chacha, who invited me to a dance at the Waterfront tonight (Monday) starting 6:30. The vest is nice, but probably some pants would be good should you decide to come.

Here is my take as a single guy. A married guy has a partner who he is comfortable with. Single guys just don't get enough practice. You never see two single guys dancing, but see two women dancing more. So, women get more practice.

I THINK...that not as many guys enjoy dancing as girls may be for the same reason not as many girls enjoy football as guys.
Perhaps it is a testosterone-estrogen thingy. A gender thingy...a sissy-macho thingy.
Sweetie will dance with me but I never see him dancing around the house like I do sometimes.
I think of the song..
I don't dance, don't ask me. Merci beaucoup.:sing::sing:

Old Dave,
I think you hit on something there and several guys hinted at it too. At the age we usually get thrown into a dance at the high school gym girls are about 2 years more mature than the guys. So I was 5'7" and taller than all the guys. The girls were ready to date and the guys had not yet pubed. Maybe the distance starts there.....??

Soooooo, if I start a weekly Two Left Feet Club next year, maybe some people would come? I can teach zero anxiety, absolute beginner and would MAKE people change partners teaching at a pace that leaves no one out. What do you think?

Like many things in our life its the environment you are raised in. My friends and I knew tha the way to wooo women was to be a good dancer. I was even more fortunate because my dance partner has been my mate since forever and we competed in local dance contest..even made television once.

Maybe next year I'll start a Two Left Feet Club?
Aiming to teach the terrified, traumatized, self-proclaimed ugly lefties how to dance with zero anxiety and how to ask each other to dance (not just guys)??
What do you think? ???

I think it's cultural. There are many country's where just as many men dance as women and they are just as good as women at dancing. Also in some of the countries of the world you would not see women dancing in public only men. The general culture of the USA has women dancing and men watching but if you go to some of the areas of the USA where different cultures group together you might see something totally different

I don't know about the USA, but in Canada men like to wash the car and do oil changes. And women like to dance. It's a gender thing.

add to that in the USA; play with mechanical things that burn gas and somethings that go bang or blow up, & hunt, & fish & get sweaty playing sports, & scratch & belch & etc. & tell jokes. And many women like to dance & eat out & go for moon-light walks: and, yes ladies, please accept it (no disrespect meant), it is a gender thing.
Thank goodness there are differences, or life would really be boring:mornincoffee:

I think I know the answer to this question !! For those of you that get the Village Sun, If you look in the classified section there has been an AD fpr the past week asking for available MEN to become Dance Hosts for Holland America and receive a free cruise. All the dancing men from The Vilages applied for the job.....and you see what is left!

Sad. But a lot of truth to this.
Single men say its 10 to 1 ratio (women to men). Most single women will say its actually only 30 to 1 ratio due to this problem (picture).

There have been many classes like this before. Seems like we (especially single guys), don't show up. Too busy playing pickleball and sometimes golf. Maybe you might want to learn to play pickleball.

Well, maybe for you but I have never changed the oil in my entire life, did not even change a tire until I was in my thirties (I never had a flat before then), and wash a car.....the dirt keeps the paint lasting 200,000 plus miles.
That said.....I love to dance and am very good at it. Raced home from school to watch American Bandstand (when it was still in Philadelphia) and learned how to dance from that show and Summertime on the Pier (Steel Pier in Atlantic City) as well as Soul Train. To quote a great Motown song...'I haven't stopped dancing yet'.

One of the network magazine programs did a feature on this some years back and it was very interesting. One guy mentioned that at the end of the evening he had 5 room keys slipped into his jacket pocket. The men have a strict set of rules and the cruise line watches them like a hawk so that they don't get to friendly. All the guys they interviewed seemed to be VERY happy with the gig.

I have an opposite issue where my wife hates to dance and I enjoy it.
I am not particularly good but can hold my own. However the wife will not let me dance with any other women at a gathering.
Now I just go for the food...:mmmm:

Ladies/Girls tend to like to dance and to be noticed.
Men/Boys tend to not like to dance because they think they will be noticed.

Thanks, I enjoyed that ........... but, the big guy is the dancer, he had some cool moves.
Seriously, in our case it is the degeneration of joints which has brought my husband's dancing to an end, and he was a superb dancer. He was also a exceptional athlete, so may be the pounding on his joints is the result of his early years.
There are some very talented men who line dance .............

For me personally i have two left feet and no rythem. I think women just naturally have more rythem. most men would rather sit and listen to the music and have a drink and dance 1 slow one.

No, not true, men have rhythm. It's like anything else, some do some don't. I've seen women that move like Elaine on "Seinfeld", and I've seen men who move like Fred Astaire. What about Patrick Swayze (oozing sex appeal) in Dirty Dancing, Antonio Banderas, John Travolta .......... and on and on. Men have rhythm, it's finding one here in TV that's the problem.

I can dance after the 2nd gin and tonic, or at least think I can!
I figure if the lady isn't too embarrassed to be seen with me then it's OK by me to embarrass myself.
I wish I had taken lessons and do like slow dancing.

i think most guys are surprised how difficult and athletic dancing really is...a good dancer makes it look easy but when you try to take lessons, it is apparent that one needs a lot of practice, just like as in any sport....if men could approach dancing as an athletic activity, perhaps they could value it more and become more proficient... but most ladies do not expect fred astaire or gene kelly, they are just happy to get him out on the dancefloor!! i think some men think dancing is for sissys! it really is not! the guy who is sitting at the bar drinking while watching ladies dance is not the guy who will impress those he is watching! and he is probably a lot fatter! :)

I love dancing! But, you must remember, the longest walk for a guy was across the gym floor after mustering the courage to ask a girl to dance and she said NO!
Growing up in the 50's, dancing was the thing. I would even practice dancing at home with a door knob. Sounds weird, but as you practiced, you could swing the door to and fro to move around. The rage in Alabama was the "PC Bop", which we practiced a lot to learn "cool moves" so when we would go to Panama City Beach, we could "cut a rug" with the best of them from Georgia and surrounding areas.
What excites me about dancing in the Villages is I don't care what anyone thinks about my dancing. . . I'm out there to enjoy myself. . . not impress anyone.
Finally, one big hurdle for dancing with a new partner at the squares is you don't know how each other dances. Guess that's why line dances are so popular. I enjoy them, but love dancing with my honey better!! :pepper2:

Now that's what I'm talking about...dance like nobody's watching. I never say no to a dance request unless the guy has been obnoxious. I love just about every form of dance A to Z!
Glad to hear you and your sweetie are secure enough to not cling. good to hear some paired up folks dance with others.

I'm taking another stab at this...I know how awkward I used to feel wishing somebody would ask me to dance, but never daring to break the tradition that guys ask. I'm pretty much off the chain on that now as enough suffering from not dancing is enough.
Guessing that guys also feel awkward and don't want to feel rejected if the woman says no? I asked a guy the other night who said no, but I was asked by others. I have the attitude that a no isn't about me, it's that the other person just wants to look at dancing.
