View Full Version : Why I actually like TV but will NOT move there!

Whoa, I just wanted to get your attention dont judge me just yet.
After visiting friends in TV a couple of times a year, my wife and I decided last December to pack up the cat and do a full blown LV. During our previous dalliances in TV we had always been at the mercy of our hosts who, while gracious, kept guiding us around all the while extolling the virtues of their fine village. Consequently, they never allowed us to just take the golf cart and go out and explore the place on our own. From what they had shown us and from what we experienced what was NOT to like?
The minute we arrived I felt like I was being taken care of and in a good way. We were taken to our villa and shown the gas golf cart and told to just have a good time. The housebound cat was now allowed to run free among the bushes in the courtyard and soon discovered the thrill of walking under the vertical venetian blinds. At least the cat fell in love with the place and it made us smile.
Our first excursion in the cart was to the supermarket. It turned out to take longer than in the car but driving the cart was fun and a new experience. Probably not going to take the cart to get ice cream even in December in fear it would melt. The market was wonderful and we purchased a few snacks and went to a rather short checkout lane that was occupied by a rather older gentleman. He appeared to be having trouble counting his money out to pay for his purchase. After a while the thought arose that this might be a rather fairly common occurrence but who cared we wouldnt be in a hurry if we lived there and it may be us someday. No problem
Next we went to the liquor store and stocked up. Arriving back to our villa we made our dinner plans using some coupons we were given. Fixed myself a drink to go and away we went. Upon arriving at the restaurant I found out that open drinks were not allowed inside and oh my had I broken my first rule? How stupid of me to think that just because they had stands to buy drinks on every corner during happy hour no one was supposed to go into an establishment with an actual drink. As a former Marine I know rules are rules. No problem
The next day we had reservations to play golf at one of the easier 9 hole courses handpicked by my lovely wife. As we checked in with the starter he gave me some sort of smart aleck remark that kind of took me aback. Oh well, having worked with the public myself I know how hard it can get answering stupid questions day in and day out. Boy glad those days are past and hope I didnt ever come across as bad as he did but I may have. No problem.
That afternoon we went to the Arnold Palmer course to hit some golf balls and had one of the most expensive hamburger plates I have ever had. Later, found out that the locals do not frequent the place as much because of the prices. Oh well, went to a more reasonable club house some one suggested and had a great meal. No problem.
Finally, we went to look at some property and I noticed someone mention on TOTV an address where she had just bought a place where we were looking that afternoon. So I wrote and said I was there and would take a picture of a sunset for her. Lo and behold after my msg two TVers advised her that it is NOT safe to post your address on the forum as you never know who is looking/lurking as I could be a bad guy. However, because I was called out on a public forum I never felt so humiliated in all my life. I have learned to not judge people by the actions of a few so No problem.
I honestly think that in TV there are enough nice people that they far outweigh the NOT so nice people that are everywhere. So I think I could probably find some great friends and then find a way to stay out of the way of the not so great people. However, I might get tired of driving a golf cart everywhere or happen to break a few more rules but they are not deal breakers. So why on earth would I NOT want to move to the Villages?
Simply put
I just cannot stand the oppressive heat and humidity!
I got sunburned in three days in December, for crying out loud.
I hope everyone gets the joke? No place is perfect but if you can forgive and forget every place is perfect.
Keep on defending your Village, enjoy your hot weather and do NOT let anyone tell you that you made a mistake moving there. If you enjoy yourself it is the right place for you and God knows you earned it.
God Bless and may you all have good health for years to come.

Like I've said before, TV is not the place for everyone. And it is a good thing it isn't, with 50 million seniors in America there is not room for all of them! Sounds like your opinions have changed since your lifestyle preview trip almost a year ago. Good luck in finding your paradise.

Never lived south of Atlanta in my life except for a month (SEP) in JAX with the Marines and even the summers here are almost too bad. I just never knew it was that hot in that part of the country most of the time until the visit and seeing how hot it was in December. I was just saying there is nothing wrong with TV as I can see. Happy HolidaysDifferent strokes for different folks. Sounds like this worked out well for everyone. MTHeineken avoided coming to a place that would so clearly make him unhappy. And those of us that love it here will be spared the complaints of someone who would obviously be unhappy about a wide variety of things.
Congratulations on a sound decision, one that will be beneficial for all concerned.

His piece was a backhanded slap at the Villages but what I fail to understand is why he would write such a long winded piece a year later about a place that in the final analysis he is moving to because he does not like the weather? BTW do you think the restaurant owner who males his living selling food and drinks is "big brother" because because he would-not allow someone to bring drinks or food (they sell hot dogs in the square as well) into his restaurant? How about the knock on the so called older gentleman who was counting his change? Was that nice? This guy or gal seems ti have had problems wherever he went. IMO he will always have issues no matter where he goes because he will always bring himself with him.

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Why does everyone have to love everything about a place?
Why can't people love 75% of it and not so much the remainder???
No matter where one lives, including beautiful bucolic quintessential Vermont, which for any of those who have seen it, know it is "God's country" with pure natural beauty.......and also has some harsh, at times, winter conditions.......icy roads, pot holes in the spring, sometimes several "mud seasons"........no place is entirely perfect.
None of us up here have our heads in the sand about the irritating things of living this far north............but we also can appreciate the glorious autumn colors, the uncrowded roads and the basic safety that abounds.
Florida IS NOT PERFECT EITHER. THAT'S FOR SURE. High crime rates in the larger metro areas. High heat and humidity. Sink Holes. Bugs. Alligators and snakes. Lots of things for folks to consider.
Anyone who thinks a place is totally perfect is living in a dream.
I guess it depends upon where one came from to begin with.
We always loved vacationing in Florida for two weeks in April and sometimes a week in September.............but it is INTENSELY HOT.
Saying that does NOT make a person unhappy or negative. It's the truth.
To deny that it snows in Vermont is a lie. ditto to deny that it is HOT in Florida is a lie. It's hotter than hell. Some people can take it , while some people cannot. That does not make them unhappy. However, moving round trip gets expensive, after one finds out they made a mistake and cannot tolerate the conditions........
I can't decide, and I kinda guess neither can you if you like it here or not. You have typed a lot of things on this forum to not be interested in this place.
I would never venture any opinion on living in Vermont unless I lived in Vermont. I can read about it, I can visit it, I can join a forum and read what others think and feel, but unless and until I live there, I cannot truly know how people act, react, interact and live. I cannot really make any valid decisions as to why anyone would say that it is perfect and bucolic.
I would be a bit sceptical until I, myself, had laid down the cash and adopted a place as my home place. So that it was mine to identify with and to grow used to and to enjoy and ultimately to defend.
I love The Villages. It is my home. You love Vermont it is your home. No place is perfect, but most people grow to love the place that is home to them.

If he was writing about the weather, he could have said it in many fewer words. It was not about the weather. I do not think anyone said it was not hot in Florida so no one as you said LIED about anything. This was a very transparent hit piece by someone that seems to have problems, even with the generous host family who put him up, no matter where he goes.

This is exactly why they changed their minds.........
They were just honestly explaining why as beautiful as the place is, they cannot take the heat and humidity, among other things such as rigidity toward someone having their own opinion which goes against the "group think".........and they are accused of drinking too much.
Go figure.
It's hard to put a finger on it, but anything that doesn't go along with the "Big Brother" concensus, is ridiculed.
It's so obvious for "outsiders" to see this. And so obvious that others are really afraid to say anything about it.
Besides the heat and humidity, the other concern, especially of my husband, is that the homes are TOO CLOSE TOGETHER......which leads to "lack of privacy".
I am confused. You have been a member since 2008 and have over 1400 post? Why do you care about what is going on here? Just curious

:throwtomatoes:You know, people are allowed to change their minds...........
Back in 1994, we sold our family home here in Vermont....the home we had raised our children in for twenty years.......to a couple who had survived Hurricane Andrew in Florida. The wife had been traumatized after their roof blew off.......she told us, "All I want to have is a breath of cool refreshing air".........we were the ones moving to the Gulf Coast of Florida (our second move to Florida.....the first having been back when the children were very very young; now they were both graduated from college and on their own).
When we returned from Florida, both times, back to Vermont, we also loved experiencing breathing in that crisp cold air.........it was refreshing and invigorating. We had missed the nice fresh air. We bought our third home in the same exact neighborhood.........back with all of our good old friends and neighbors......where we had all raised our families together.
Now, the lady who bought our home in 1994.......finally decided, after a decade in Vermont, losing her husband, her son growing up, etc. that she could no longer take the LONG COLD WINTERS.........so she had a home built in South Carolina........
This is a free country after all.......and people are allowed to change their minds. She did. We did. You have.
In my humble opinion, the ones who have "the best of both worlds" are the snowbirds who can winter in Florida for a spell.......but then return NORTH to their primary homes for the spring and summer and autumn months which are beautiful. A wise realtor in Venice Florida reminded me as we were selling our beachfront condo......"You don't have to buy in Florida in order to enjoy the winter season in Florida"......I'll always remember that............especially since I notice that MOST FOLKS return north no later than May.........to escape the oppressive heat and humidity.
Moving long distance, back and forth again........even if one sell all of their furniture........is still expensive as there are always personal items to move. Been there, done that. So better to BE SURE one way or another before acting in haste and repenting at lesiure.
GOOD LUCK. I do not think you are negative. I think you have a brain and use it.
Not sure what your point is but most people who make a move do not act in haste. Heinekens is a man who visits as a guest more than once and describes his probably free visits as being " at the mercy of his hosts" "not allowed to go out on his own" , gets behind an "older" gentleman in line and sees fit to mention it, orders a hamburger ( perhaps he was "forced" into this) then complains about the price and makes totally untrue statements about "residents not patronizing this restaurant", plays his initial game of golf and has a problem with the Starter, is surprised that a restaurant will not allow him to bring his own drinks ( Is this permitted anywhere, I would not have the gall to bring my own drinks into a restaurant), would not buy ice cream since the golf cart ride is "too long" and after all this he concludes, a year later mind you, that he would not move because of the weather. This was a very transparent hit piece. What I cannot figure out is WHY?

Funny that I said I would never move to Florida because of the heat and humidity until I visited TV. I so not golf, dislike being told what to do, do not like group activities, am mostly a loner, do not drink much, and dislike conformity and yet here I am.
I think some visitors to TV tend to treat it like a Club Med and forget that it is our home town. I would not be allowed to carry a drink into a restaurant where I used to live so why would I think to do that here? The problems I see with occassional visitors is that they forget people live here, act like they are at a resort and forget that the workers here are also residents and will not smile to please the tourists no matter what is said or done. As for prices, food and clothing here are the least expensive out of every place I lived. However I never vacationed anywhere inexpensive so I have no point of reference.

I think that there is a place on this earth for everyone to be happy. In many words, the OP was stating that this would not be the place for him. I respect that. There are people who say they love living in NYC but It would not be the place for me to live, just to visit. Some people love being out on the country...sure the mountains are beautiful and the air is fresh but not for me. Some like the cold and snow....not for me any more. Is TV perfect??? Nope but it is as close to perfect for me and the way that I want to live so different strokes for different folks. That's why there is a whole wide world out there....there has to be a place that's near perfect for everyone.

People read these to get an idea of the "climate" and I do not mean weather.
Expressing one's feelings is not necessarily complaining. I really doubt if you've read all of my posts. It's a free country with freedom of speach and the right to express an opinion.
I've had enough private messages from people who are actually afraid to post their true opinions.
You should try living in New England sometime. People are allowed to have varying opinions.......it's welcomed.......and it's what makes the world go around.....not being "clones" of one another.
There is a stark difference between someone "having an opinion" and making vailed attacks. Calling people "clones" is not an opinion. It is a pretty unfair statement. I lived in the Northeast all my life and do not seem to see any difference in the people who live in the Villages. You seem to have a built in bias but why you and the Heininin continue to post here is compete mystery, especially if you don't live here.

I would venture to say that people who end up posting here WERE interested in purchasing property for their retirement years.
While reading the various posts, a "back story" seems to crop up again and again..........I think I'll have to dig up that book "Leisureville" and read it once again........I probably skimmed through it the first time....before passing it on for others to read.
It seems like there are an awful lot of YOUNG SINGLE PEOPLE looking to make connections on this TOTV..........we are all coming from a different background as far as family dynamics..........
I don't see the posters as being "sad"......I see them as "trying to make up their minds" before making a huge mistake......one way or another.
We have a close knit neighborhood where we've all been there for each other when someone celebrates a milestone or someone loses a spouse.
But yet we all respect each other's privacy........not sure if we could live in a place that was super busy 24/7 without some down time or couples one on one time. We are NOT looking for a resort. Again, wintering in Florida can be changeable.........one coast one winter, another coast another winter.........TV some other time perhaps.
Yes, perhaps "they" were interested and now they're not. DONE, MOVE ALONG. The posters that I said were "sad" are not the people who live here or the ones trying to make up their minds. What I think is sad is someone who has made up there mind, don't want it but just can't move along.

This is the oddest thread I've ever read. There seem to be several cries for help here but I can't be sure. I have to agree with Patty though...if you are a TV resident or want to be, this is the place for you. If you aren't, why don't you move on? Trying to convert senior citizens to your way of thinking is a giant waste of time.

[QUOTE=Happinow;592651]I think that there is a place on this earth for everyone to be happy.
I go along with what you said, Happinow, and I would add that if this is not the place for someone, so be it. Find your place. No need to blast it, for whatever reason, to the people who have settled here. Just move on and find your comfortable spot. Mine is here; so it is for many others. I understand it's not for everyone, but I don't understand running it into the ground just because one doesn't like it. To each his own... and go find your own.

Okay, I may be wrong here but . . .
I believe the OP was basically kidding and stating that he wouldn't move here because of the heat and humidity.
I also feel that he was sarcastically putting down those who post negatively on here.
He even goes on to say: "Keep on defending your Village, enjoy your hot weather and do NOT let anyone tell you that you made a mistake moving there. If you enjoy yourself it is the right place for you and God knows you earned it."
Just my opinion!

Before we wrap this interesting thread up I'd like to say that we probably like TV, hmmm, about 90% which happens to be about 90% more than we liked where we lived in NC. I'm not crazy about the heat and humidity but it was almost as bad in NC and being near the coast in NC, we certainly didn't have to contend with snow! I found Vermont and all of the northeast to be charming and absolutely beautiful in the fall but it never occurred to us to retire there. After all, I'm from the great state of GEORGIA and my husband is a native Floridian! HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A SOUTHERNER RETIRING UP NORTH?

The title of the long original post tells its purpose. It's a negative post with a negative title.
This is about the 80th time when I've said to myself, "I'm glad I didn't read this board before nor during our lifestyle preview stay, nor while renting for a couple of months when we bought a home here." We would have missed out on the time of our lives if we had listened to the tiny proportion of residents who actually comment here. This board has good info, but it is not representative of TV as a whole. Most people here don't even know what "Talk of the Villages" is when I've mentioned something I read here.

For goodness sakes folks, it was all in the last three sentences of his post:
I hope everyone gets the joke? No place is perfect but if you can forgive and forget every place is perfect.
Keep on defending your Village, enjoy your hot weather and do NOT let anyone tell you that you made a mistake moving there. If you enjoy yourself it is the right place for you and God knows you earned it.
God Bless and may you all have good health for years to come.

I kept trying to tell everyone it was a joke but no one believed me or were afraid of breaking ranks and acknowledge it until ugotme finally did it. I never thought anyone would really think that (other than weather) any of those things I mentioned were valid reasons NOT to move to the villages, I mean really? Just tried to show how some people can find fault in anything no matter how trivial.

Sorry... I went back and read the original post, and I did not see any "joke" in it. It was pretty negative, and I felt the mea culpas at the end were just put there to try to soften the original opinions. If this was subtle humor, it fell flat.

Oh Joyful...Someone funny and positive and witty to post to start my day.
Last night a small group of us went to hear The Villages Concert Band Christmas Concert. It was pouring rain and just not a pretty night...but the music from those 140 EXCELLENT musicians warmed our hearts and made our toes tap.. and afterwards all came to our house for soup and sandwiches and pie and with the tree lights on and the joy in our hearts... Well..There is no place like home for the holidays.

:throwtomatoes:
The post above is a prime example of how people can completely distort some ones words to fit their own agenda. Why did I write the seemingly offensive post you ask? It was to show that even though I clearly said something was no problem many of you on this board took offense and the post above happened to be my pick as the worst.
I will admit that my sense of humor needle went awry and I really struck a nerve and clearly infuriated some folks. I guess it was like someone coming into my house and making fun of it and thinking it was funny while I did not. Sincerely if I have offended it was NOT my intent as here are my true feelings about TV.
I do not know of one place in the country or the world for that matter that has as much affordable comfort, convenience and activities as you have in TV. What I thought was, a lighthearted look at TV was sadly misinterpreted as a drive by attack at your community for this I am sorry. I have seen the great lengths you folks go to as far as performing due diligence in moving to your paradise. However, for some unknown reason, it seems like some of you have a penchant for wanting to impress the feeling of living in your paradise on everyone you meet. If anyone should, like I did, poke some fun at your place it becomes a call to arms in order to protect the perfectness. People, you all very happy and are fortunate to be living in your paradise so why attack people who may not agree even slightly?
In my opinion, I received some pretty nasty posts over what I feel were some very trivial matters. So let me get this out in the open and you can flail away at me again if you choose but here is my go at the above post from my POV.
I was shown as ungrateful to my hosts for wanting to explore TV on my own in an effort to better do my due diligence like you all have surely done.
I was pointed out for mentioning getting behind an old man who I readily admitted would be me some day so as not to offend.
I was accused of saying "residents not patronizing this restaurant", which if you look I never said. I just pointed out that there are expensive places to eat in TV and mentioned that some people expressed their opinion that there are also more reasonable places if you look. I never mentioned anything derogatory about either.
I was accused of wanting my own drink rules instead I actually stated I am accepting of existing rules.
I was criticized for pointing out the obvious that it might be hard to buy ice cream using a golf cart.
Finding fault with me because I cannot function in hot weather even when not knowing if it is medically or health related.
In conclusion, the why of my post was to poke fun at the most perfect place to retire I have ever been to and have some fun with the residents. Hence a post title that was sure to pique everyones curiosity. I was not aiming for a backhanded slap or thinly veiled attack at your community. Do you think if I was trying to do that I would have pointed out more serious and controversial issues instead of trying to make a case for NOT carrying melted ice cream?
Nonetheless, I have once again learned yet another valuable lesson in dealing with human nature and I shall offer to never darken your doorstep ever again in repentance for my most grievous sin so aptly pointed out by the keepers of the TV flame.
Peace to all and to all a good night.

We can't all agree. Some people live here and just hate it. They don't like the way things are done, the weather is too hot, they aren't allowed to put their cannon in the front yard, they find the restaurant food too expensive, and not good and the servers disrespectful and inefficient.
Some people live here and pretty much are good with stuff.
Some people pick around on a bunch of stuff I consider small stuff and worry about things that MIGHT happen quite a ways down the road.

Imagine not being able to take a drink from the outside into a restaurant. I suppose in Marietta GA you can. Right.

WE just moved to The Village of Amelia on November 1st. We have been coming to TV for 10 years. TV is not for everyone , I think in this case we are lucky the weather is hot so this individual does not make a mistake and move here and be miserable .For the most part we are all happy to be here and enjoying life.
What say you ?

Here you go Gracie according to Google:
Passive-aggressive personality disorder is a long-term (chronic) condition in which a person seems to actively comply with the desires and needs of others, but actually passively resists them. In the process, the person becomes increasingly hostile and angry.
"Comply with the desires and needs of others".....that sounds familiar.
More information..............read first hyperlink.......then scroll down.
Passive Aggressive Personality Disorder | Peace and Healing (http://www.peaceandhealing.com/psychology/personality-disorders/passive-aggressive/)
Earlier suppositions..........
* dissatisfied people who acted as if they were perpetually wounded (Aschaffenburg, 1922);
* fussy people with sour dispositions (Hellpach, 1920);
* depressives with ill tempers who were spiteful, malicious, and pessimistic (Schneider, 1923);
* people with irritable moods (Bleuler, 1924); and
* people who took everything hard and felt the unpleasantness in every situation (Kraepelin, 1913). (Millon & Radovanov, Livesley, ed., 1995, pp. 314-316).
The current criteria for the passive-aggressive personality disorder as proposed by the Personality Disorders Work Group for the DSM-IV includes:
* passive resistance to fulfilling social and occupational tasks through procrastination and inefficiency;
* complaints of being misunderstood, unappreciated, and victimized by others;
* sullenness, irritability, and argumentativeness in response to expectations;
* angry and pessimistic attitudes toward a variety of events;
* unreasonable criticism and scorn toward those in authority;
* envy and resentment toward those who are more fortunate;
* self-definition as luckless in life and an inclination to whine and grumble about being jinxed;
* alternating behavior between hostile assertion of personal autonomy and dependent contrition (Millon & Radovanov, Livesley, ed., 1995, p. 321).
MAKES ONE WONDER WHO IS PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE AMONG US.
Hopefully, not too many.
The problem folks have is they feel they have to CONSTANTLY EXPLAIN WHAT THEY MEANT.......and even those who can type quickly and are long winded enough to go into DETAIL........still are misunderstood, by a few naysayers and doubting Thomases. Most people who have lived long enough know that differences in opinions is what makes the world go round. How BORING it would be if everyone were the same.

Now I know why Gracie wouldn't know what passive-aggressive means... she is none of those things!
However, I DO wonder why Mikey, Harry and Hershey are only two cats...

They can't figure it out either, which may lead eventually to a lot of emotional conflict so we are trying to NOT let that happen by showering them with love. Their dependency needs are so fulfilled that they greet people at the door as if they were dogs and have to be " sent to their room".
I love you C France. You are the kind of person that makes me and everyone else happy here.
Merry Christmas.

Nah, if they were dogs they would just be dressed alike, it would be all good. I think they're conflicted because they are nudists.
