There is a thing that looks like some type of sensor on the side of the roof at the eaves. Does anyone know what it is? It is white and wired.

It's the sensor for the irrigation system. It prevents the system from running when it's raining.

How big is it? Does it look like a small white cylinder? Quite possibly it is the rain sensor for your irrigation system. It is supposed to measure rainfall and turn off your system if there has been sufficient rain.

That's the theory anyway. I've never noticed that mine works. We can have three days of torrential downpour and the sprinklers still come on (unless I turn them off manually).

Government sensor. That's why I always wear my aluminum foil hat in the house.

I have found rain sensors to be unreliable. I run my system manually. I only turning it on when the lawn requires it.

Methinks that you have malfunctioning GAZINDA's and GAZONDA's.

The "little thingy" GAZONDA the side of your home.......
.......then there is another smaller thingy which GAZINDA the GAZONDA,
the GAZINDA is a cork like substance......when it deteriorates, the GAZONDA no longer functions properly and is therefore rendered KAPUT. ( KAPUT is a teknikle term which is "prununce-a-kated" KAPOOT )

If your rain sensor is not working, it is either set to bypass in the timer box, or it needs to be serviced.

As others have correctly stated, it most likely is the rain sensor for your sprinkler system.

They usually work well for years, but like anything else can degrade to the point of needing replacement. They are simple mechanisms and what some folks do not know is that most have an adjustment to stay off when you have a certain amount of rain, i.e., 1/4", 1/2", etc.

The common reasons I find for them not working is either not hooked up correctly, or having a break in the wiring between the sensor and the control box sometimes done by weedwackers, etc.

They need to be placed where rain will hit them to work. I have found them installed UNDER eaves or under trees or landscape foliage where rain cannot hit the sensor. They are inexpensive to replace and maintain.

They are good to have if you are one that does not keep up with watering issues yourself, or if you are not home a lot. Watering your lawn during a rainstorm can easily cause over-watering and is costly and wasteful.

I must have a built in rain sensor. I can tell if it's raining just by going outside.:a040::crap2:

Our rain sensor has never worked even thought they came out numerous times to fix it. We finally just went to manual setting of system. Our lawn was dead by the time we closed on the house because the sensor would never let the sprinklers go on. They did replace so but after losing more sod we over rode system.

Had the same question when we did our walk through with our builder.

He said, "It is a listening device that goes directly to the Morse's" then laughed and told us it was a sensor for the irrigation system.

I found our sprinklers operating once after a period of hard rain for several days. Fortunately, the prior homeowners had left us the manual for the rain sensor in with the other paperwork and manuals, etc. Turns out all the sensor needed was just a quick and easy adjustment. You've gotta be a bit careful with it when adjusting - seemed kinda fragile.
