boy howdy defined

a post from another thread made me do a search for the meaning of the phrase 'boy howdy' since it is a phrase that is sometimes used here on totv.

none of the sites i checked indicated that is an unkind phrase; though a couple explanations did indicate that it could be used sarcastically.

My sainted Grandmother used it and she was born in a rural area of Illinois.

She used it as an exclamation of surprise, bewilderment and when other words would be too much.

I never heard her use strong language. Sometimes I do. I feel a strong word coming on.

I have only one thing to say about this thread: Boy Howdy.

The first time I heard the term, "boy howdy" was on The Big Valley. Heath Barkley said it as an expression similiar to "oh my gosh."

I figured it was something like that. Doesn't sound too "positive" to me.
A bit sarcastic, if truth be told.

If it was good, Vermonters would say it's "wicked good".
That's weird as well...........

Why not just use plain English.
