hope it is after I have my Starbucks!Starbucks employees will probably figure that with the world ending on Friday, and it doesn't make sense to get up out of bed and go to work. Sorry to be the bearer of this bad news, but apparently it's no Starbucks for you on Friday! You could, of course go and buy your Starbucks on Thursday and reheat it in the AM. Just make sure though that you get up real early since the Mayan Calendar didn't specify a TOA for the end! See you on the other side! :mornincoffee:

It will end just before the cocktail hour. That is, at 4:57 p.m., three minutes before it's OK to have a drink. Of course it's always 5 p.m. somewhere in the world.

It's a big world, so I'm guessing it will start at 12:01 a.m. and continue on until 11:59 p.m. Yeah, 24-hours sounds about right. It always takes less time to destroy something than it does to build it, you know?

Wait,

We must at least hold it off till we have the Chrispers luncheon done.Didn't you know that the Mayans also predicted that TOTV'ers would be getting together this Friday and set the end to come at 3:30PM? They allowed 30 minutes so the attendees could make a toast, whoop it up then hold hands and sing gooba-ya (Italian version of Kumbaya) until 3:30. It's expected to be a really big blast!

11:12am - UT Time Solstice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solstice)

To convert UT (or UTC) Time to Eastern Standard Time you subtract 5 hours. Converting from UTC to AM/PM: for both standard and daylight saving time (http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/maps/utc/frutc.rxml)

The Mayan Calendar ends at 6:12 am and you'll find my family and me up drinking Bloody Marys at that time.

As you may know the end of the world was scheduled by the Mayans for 11:11 UCT this Friday. You may also know that this time is linked to the winter solstice! Well I just learned that the US Naval Observatory, which determines the time of the solstice, has changed the time for the solstice. Winter solstice - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_solstice)

This means that the world won't end at 11:11 as originally thought, but has been delayed to the new winter solstice time of... 11:12 UCT on Friday.

So they had to use the International Atomic Clock to establish the Universal Coordinated Time. Since we're in UTC -5 zone here in Florida, it means that when the established doomsday time of 11:11 UCT arrives, it will be 6:12 AM here.

Oh well! I guess there goes the Crispers get together tomorrow as well as your 10 AM Beatles event at Odell. http://dustpitfollies.com/crits/images/smilies/frantic-smiley.gif

The Mayan calendar includes Dec 21. There is no mention of a half day so it would appear that the world will end at midnight. But, midnight where? Will it begin at midnight at the international date line and end every hour for 24 hours? Of course there was no international date line in Mayan times, but those buggers could see the future so maybe they could see that as well.

I've heard of people "preparing" for the end of the world. How, exactly, would one prepare for such an event.

If it doesn't end, tomorrow we'll all be talking about how silly the whole thing was. If it does end, who will care?

He's quite right. The Mayans simply invented a calendar. It covers many, many years and ends on Dec 21, 2012. No one seems to know exactly why. Now we're hearing that a newer version of their calendar has been discovered that continues after 12/21/12 but it's being kept under wraps until after the world ends.

I read this excerpt online this morning, it was embedded in an article on the Mayan End of the World ......................

"Hundreds of people were scattered around the vast central plaza of Chichen Itza, some kneeling in attitudes of prayer, some seated with arms outstretched in positions of meditation, all facing El Castillo, the massive main pyramid.

Ivan Gutierrez, a 37-year-old artist who lives in the nearby village, stood before the pyramid and blew a low, sonorous blast on a conch horn. "It has already arrived, we are already in it," he said of the new era. "We are in a frequency of love, we are in a new vibration."

But it was unclear how long the love would last: A security guard quickly came over and asked him to stop blowing his conch shell, enforcing the ruin site's ban on holding ceremonies without previous permits."

It sounds like the ends is here out side.
The winds, snow, ice, -4 wind chill

Ditto here in Vermont. All morning wind gusts of 60 miles per hour.
The trees look like they are swaying to hurricane winds.......
Very ominous feeling.

Our neighbors' shutters fell off their home and landed on our front lawn.

Several neighbors who use a recycling company to pick up their garbage "at the roadside" (rather than ours who come up to the garbage receptacle near our garage doors).......have seen all of their garbage cans, recycling bins, and literally all of their garbage thrown all over the neighborhood......
it's a mess.

Hubby had to go down into town for new safe batteries said it's a mess all over with Christmas decorations flying around, stuff strewn all over the place............NO SNOW and no RAIN.........just strong gusts of wind.

By now, normally we would have seen several snowstorms.
The one coming from the west is going to just turn to rain as our weatherman says it's TOO WARM.

We lost our power briefly, as well as our internet service.
We are so glad we are NOT flying today.

Now the sun is coming out but the winds are very strong.
A neighbor's piece of vinyl siding flew off the house.........
Tree branches down all over the place............

But we are all still here........it's balmy, humid and NO SNOW in December , very very very unusual. It may very well be another snowless winter for our Vermont grandchildren.............

It's only the end of their calendar.........
Another new calendar begins............

Mexican towns and resorts were making out like bandits with tourists......

Read below:
The buildup to 2012 echoes excitement and fear expressed on the eve of the new millennium, popularly known as Y2K, though on a smaller scale, says Lynn Garrett, senior religion editor at Publishers Weekly. She says publishers seem to be courting readers who believe humanity is creating its own ecological disasters and desperately needs ancient indigenous wisdom.

"The convergence I see here is the apocalyptic expectations, if you will, along with the fact that the environment is in the front of many people's minds these days," Garrett says. "Part of the appeal of these earth religions is that notion that we need to reconnect with the Earth in order to save ourselves."

But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete (http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/tech/science/2007-03-27-maya-2012_N.htm#) fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

Part of the 2012 mystique stems from the stars. On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This means that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time," Joseph writes.

But scholars doubt the ancient Maya extrapolated great meaning from anticipating the alignment — if they were even aware of what the configuration would be.

Astronomers generally agree that "it would be impossible the Maya themselves would have known that," says Susan Milbrath, a Maya archaeoastronomer and a curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History. What's more, she says, "we have no record or knowledge that they would think the world would come to an end at that point."

I was told at 9:42pm, just passing it along. :-)

I sure hope your right as I am dying, (no pun intended), to find out how things went at the TOTV luncheon at Crispers this afternoon.

Bill-n-Brillo was there and Shesamax and Swrinfla and John Heydt and CQuick and Village Dude and Village Bruiser and Jimwith numbers after his name and Virtual Geezer and our daughter Helene and Frank07 and two fellows that I only have their real name and don't want to post that... and The Administrator bought our lunch.

Thank you for such a lovely time. It was a GREAT group! But it would have been so much nicer if you had been there.

Hurry home.

Thanks Gracie, Your the best.

I met swrinfl at Crispers back in Sept, 2009 and he is a nice fellow.

I'm working on being in TV for 2013. Can't happen fast enough to suit me.

Dear ones.

It is not THE NEXT DAY. So here we are survivors with an opportunity to live another wonderful day and to try to make the world a little better place.

Peace.

As I always say, "the sun will come up tomorrow".

It's Saturday and all is well. Another day to make the world a little better.

Wishing everyone peace and happiness and continued good health.
