I just got a telephone call. The caller ID said Century Link so i picked up. A female voice said "You have a call from Albert Murphy, an inmate at Sumter County Jail." I hung up.
What kind of scam is this?

There are supposedly a lot of phone scams going on. I would notify the police and Century Link just in case someone is using your number for long distance calls. I don't know how one would do that, but I've heard something about this on the news.

More than likely, the jail inmate told the operator the wrong number. As I understand it, the jails do not have direct dial phones and all must go through an operator as a collect call.

You definitely did the right thing in hanging up.

Good thing jails here are required to announce when a prisoner is calling. I think I'd be pretty creeped out if I got a call from an inmate, especially someone totally unknown to me.

But maybe not a scam -- it's quite possible that the jails have CenturyLink phone lines and, thus, a collect call would show the company name since there is no individual calling, per se.

That is funny.

jblum315, I bet they dialed the wrong number from the jail. It would be creepy though.

Dialed the wrong number and got hung up on.

BTW - I wonder how long he has to wait before he can make another call.

My curiosity might have gotten the best of me. I would have, at least, asked who they were calling, but, on the other hand, if it was some scam, best to hang up as quickly as possible.

I got one of those forwarded emails today about another scam. Supposedly, you get a call from the county regarding your failure to appear for jury duty. When you tell them you never got a summons, they ask for details, such as your social security number, so they can figure out what happened. No idea if this is actually happening....like I said, one of those (hated) emails, but doesn't hurt to be cautious.
