In my old neighborhood, there was the local town alcoholic named Louie "The Lump".

The neighborhood bar had a big glass window that you could observe everything going on outside.

Louie had developed the custom of taking a cab home even though he lived only a block and a half away. One night after heavy drinking, he called for a cab. The cab arrived and Louie got in. The cab driver must have been writting something down.

After a couple of minutes, Louie got out of the cab, gave the driver $5,00 and then proceeded to stumble home.

You can't make this stuff up.

I think we were culturally deprived in my childhood neighborhood in Columbus,Ohio. All of our stumbling drunks were called Karl or Hans or Franz. I don't remember any Louies.
;)
I grew up in the brewery district.

Yonkers, New York and he lived in the house directly across from me.

The bar was called Ernesto's, a block and a half way. A two minute walk if one was walking straight.

No, it's not you Joe.

BTW - Louie was a nice man. He just liked to drink a little too much,

My hometown was so small, we didn't have a town drunk. We had to take turns.

Small point - Yonkers is not exactly upstate New York.

Just over the Bronx line so technically it is, but never to be confused with farm after farm in taking routes to Cooperstown, (Baseball Hame Of Fame).
I know your from New York. I know some people don't realized that an hour and a half from the city and your in farm country.

For a short time New York was the largest dairy producing state but then Wisconsin took it back.

Happy, Ed?
