Sorry, no can do. The actions on the part of the perp in Connecticut are heinous and reprehensible and I feel terrible for the innocent children and their families. Banning something (guns, knives, cars, alcohol) isn't the answer IMHO. Someone intent on doing an act of violence can't be prevented from doing so by legislation or proclamation. If this were so then there would be no murders, drunk drivers or thieves because murder, drunk driving and theft is already against the law. God bless the families and the innocent children. Banning an inanimate object isn't the answer. Societies mores need to change or be changed. How you do that, I haven't a clue....

Well said. Too much attention to the instrument and not enough
to the cause (mental health).

I can sign it. I fully support everyone's right to own a gun, but I recognize a limit. I am not allowed to mount twin 50's on my car (although sometimes I wish I was). Similarly, I don't see the purpose of anyone owning assault weapons.

Thank you both for reading my post. I respectfully agree to disagree.
I realize this is a complex issue but I think that access to weapons of mass destruction should not be made available to the general public. I think limiting access to some assault weapons will lessen the probablity of another tradgedy of this magnitude, It's just one facet to a complex issue.
I fully respect your point of views as another facet is mental health.

Gladly signed. A ban is not the whole answer but it is a the very least a start. You want to add mental health and other options great, but this has to start somewhere.

So you're totally against the smoking ban in restaurants. And how about the government making us wear seatbelts or mandating that small children be in car seats? I'm totally with you on allowing smoking anywhere and getting rid of seat belts and car seats.
I pray that none of your children or grandchildren were among the dead in the Newtown, CT shooting. Now might be the time to start stocking up on ammunition...hide it under your bed and hope it doesn't explode while you sleep.
BTW...It's easier and quicker to ban an inanimate object than to change societies mores. We can work on that down the road, but in order to save more lives those inanimate objects have to go.

I've been signing similar petitions for years. Maybe something this time. Assault weapons are a little piece of the gun deaths although the weapon of choice for mass killers. To those above who say if we take away guns they will just use knives or baseball bats... that is IMO an apologists argument. We have 32000 gun deaths in the US per year. Do you really think if these killers did not have guns many would have substituted other instruments for lethal means with equal efficacy? I hear this fallacy too often and ask that those of you who believe it produce the data showing equivalent lethality or weapon substitution. On the same day as the school massacre in Newtown, a knife wielding man attacked a school in China. He wounded 22 kids before he was stopped. None died.None died. None died.

Sorry but as you can see - the difference is not in the gun but in the "dressing" of the gun.
No doubt the bottom weapon looks much more "evil" than the top rifle but they are the same gun.
These are semi-automatic rifles. You still have to pull the trigger for each shot.
Automatic weapons ARE banned.

the picture says it all!!!!!
Basically, there is no such thing as an assault weapon. It is a term made up by politicians who want to take away our right to bear arms. The assault weapons ban is a first step.

Remember when there were armed guards in every bank? That didn't deter bank robbery, in fact most of the guards were wounded or killed during a robbery. Having armed guards posted in or around schools can't guarantee safety of anykind.
Our society is wholey a soft target.
Indians at The Little Big Horn weren't supposed to have repeating rifles either, tell that to Custer and his trained soldiers. if someone is determined to do harm to innocent children or adults it's only a matter of time before another method other than firearms will be used.
If you want to remove certain kinds of firearms go right ahead. In the future, when attacks continue to massacre us using a different method can I ask for my guns back to protect myself and my family?
Fat chance........
