View Full Version : Please forgive my boasting on Christmas Day

I have been brought up to be modest, do not talk about oneself, etc. I need to put that aside for just a few minutes as I was touched on Christmas day by the golf gods. If I was younger I would climb up on the roof and tell the “world”. On Christmas Day my Dad and I play an executive course or two. Today we went off to Oakleigh up by his house before dinner. I started with a par, followed by a bogey, then a birdie, then a bogey and another par. Pretty good for me, one over after 5. Then the world shifted…….I was not prepared…. I was about to enter a playa’s zone….. I place I seldom venture….

I birdied 6, 7, 8 and 9. With each putt going in my Dad and I would look at each other and say…. wow ...:highfive:

Twice in my life I have birdied four holes in a row on ‘regular’ golf courses, never 5 in a row, so I told Dad we had to go another hole. Executive course or not, 5 in a row would still be a record… We went back up and found the first tee at Amberwood open. I hit a very good tee shot but just missed a 12 foot birdie…… oh well I thought, 4 in a row is quite special. We continued on as we still had time before dinner. I assumed the magic was over, but then I made birdie on number two. Man o man, what a day, if I only made that 12 footer on the previous hole ….

Time for one more hole before heading home. Number 3 at Amberwood plays about 180 yards as it is slightly uphill. I hit a nice shot which landed on the green. My Dad could not quite see where it ended up and asked the where-abouts. About ready to jump out of my skin, I calmly said, Dad, it is in the hole…… no words can describe that moment :MOJE_whot::MOJE_whot:.

This was not a golf game with which I am familiar…. In summary:

12 holes played
2 bogeys
3 pars
6 birdies
1 hole in one

That was out of this world….. I am in my mid-50s, my dad, just 80, but today I felt like a boy again doing something special with his Dad watching proudly. It was a very special bit of golf for me, made extraordinary on Christmas as I could see how much my Dad really enjoyed it. I can imagine him now telling anyone that will listen about the golf we played on Christmas….. priceless.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Congratulations. That was very cool. If only we could re-create that "in-the-zone" feeling on demand.

I'm truly at a loss for words for what your day was like. Life is about making memories, and that you did. First a wonderful day with your father and then to play a game like you described! I started to read this and then had to read it out loud for my husband. As I finished it... I became so emotional for you and your happiness I started to tear up. Congratulations Mr. Brown. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy! I hope this is a memory of your first of many more to come.

Congratulations!!! My dad was lucky enough to have one hole in one during his golfing years and he could tell the story over and over. We appreciate it now more than ever.

I just wanted to take a post to say thanks all for the comments, I am so glad I decided to post and very happy what made the day special came through in my post. After the hole in one, I asked my Dad if there was any storms in the area as I clearly remember the fate of the Bishop in Caddyshack. To be clear, I do not play golf like I did yesterday, I have never had a round like that, it was surreal…..

Anyone who plays and understands the game of golf knows that things even out. After the way I played on Christmas day when things do ‘even out’, it is going to be ugly, so AngieFox, if you want to see tears, watch me play next time :ohdear:.

PS. Mr. Brown is an alias used in the event I post anything so ridiculous I need a new real name :faint:. Please call me Alan.

Okay, so you feel better now? Are you satisfied that you made all of us who might make 2 or 3 birdies in the round of our life feel inadequate and ineffectual? Seriously, congratulations Alan, sounds like a memorable Christmas indeed.

Who among us would not want to share this great round of golf with the rest of the world? You are forgiven. Merry Christmas!
