View Full Version : Sonny's BBQ.... Never again

Dont know if anyone has dined at Sonny's BBQ at Lake Sumter Landing but I thought I would try it last night. NEVER NEVER again. Dont know how the Villages let such a dump occupy space at beautiful Lake Sumter Landing. Food, service and overall appeal was the worst I've experienced in the Villages. I'd be curious if I'm the only one. Not that it makes any difference because I will never go back and will tell everyone how bad it was.

This is one of the only resturants in TV that I haven't tried. I personally think their reputation precedes them across the country, so I've stayed away.

Their BBQ might not necessarily the best but we feel it's decent. Haven't really ever had anything that I'd classify as bad service. If we did, we'd speak with the manager on-site about it. They can't fix/address what they might not know about.

I tend to not settle for just decent,McDonalds is decent, and I've tried the " talk to the manager" route. I dont believe my experience was part of an isolated incident because I heard my waiter say "I'm sorry" over and over to 6 tables. Like I said I've had a ton of great experiences in Villages restaurants but this one really has me bent.

I hope this was only a fluke chance on a bad night. I like Sonny's, best sweet tea around and love their BBQ sauces. We always get the BBQ chicken special and love it. JMHO please.

I NEVER complain to the manager,,, they only see it as someone who wants a free meal,,,, I can pay my way in this world,,, usaully the manager knows if he has a problem,,, but he really doesnt care.. and he doesnt want to make waves with his employees... I am not going to beg you to do your job,, I just dont return.... That is the case with SONNYs,,,

Let's face it, Sonny's pretty much has a bad rep everywhere it's located. Must be a reason. Plenty of other places for BBQ - Oakwood is good. Cody's Roadhouse has very good ribs. If you're looking for the best, try SugarBoo's in Mt. Dora.
Personally, I wish TooJay's was open late. Not for ribs but for everything else.

Penguin.
I'd like to know specifics please. Did you call it a dump because it was dirty?
I am guessing that right now during the holidays help is not the best everywhere. Just would like to know WHAT exactly disappointed you?
I know a lot of people like Sonny's. We always go to Oakwood.
AND the developer only builds and rents out the buildings. They have no control of the quality.

Was the problem Food or Service? Was it dirty? We ate there about 1 year ago and Food and Service was about average for a Village resturant. It was clean the night we were there.:ohdear:

If the service was some of the worst you ever had, what was the waiter apologizing to everyone for ?

It sounds like no one was getting their food on time! If a waitress is apologizing, something has gone wrong. I've had some good meals at Sonny's and one or two so-so meals. I prefer Oakwood now, but Sonny's hasn't done anything to me that is so egregious that I wont go again. I just think their food and service can be a little uneven. And usually, if the service is off it isn't the waitresses fault (they have always been great), but it is something that goes wrong in the kitchen.

We ate there once about 2 years ago and it was the worst service I have ever seen in TV. In fact, our table of 6 got up and walked out before dinner arrived because we had been sitting there waiting close to an hour! No one came and refilled our drinks...never gave us a reason why it was taking so long. In fact when we all got up, our waitress just stood there and watched us leave. Terrible place! Go to Oakwood instead!

I've never visited the Sonny's in question by the OP.
But I have been to MANY Sonny's all over FL and GA and have never been disappointed in the food or the service.
Love the ribs, chicken, and garlic bread...pulled pork..not so much.

I have lived in The Villages over 3 years and have been to Sonny's at Lake Sumter Landing many times. Very good pulled pork sandwiches, great barbeque beans and excellent cornbread. Service has always been very good. I have no idea why someone would call it a dump. For a restaurant where you can have all you can eat barbeque for $12, it is a bargain and downright tasty bargain.
Personally, I like the ribs at Oakwood better, too.

Penguin, how about specifics. Was the sauce not to your taste? Maybe you like it less spicy. I don't know what "overall appeal" means to you, did you not like the decor or the waiters uniforms? Service is a relative thing, was the restaurant very busy were all of the servers out back taking a smoke break?? Your condemnation without specifics does a disservice to the restaurant.

The food looked and tasted like a Swanson frozen dinner, The server did'nt know the difference between red and white wine, tables were left unbussed for a significant amount of time. Being busy is no excuse for poor service, I was in the service industry my whole carreer and my customers did'nt want to hear "I was too busy "to provide them with the service they deserved. My experience there has got me so bent that I'm moving on and going to patronize any one of the many many great eating establishments here in the Villages, and chalk up Sonny's to a real disappointing mistake.

I have to agree with Penguin... we went to Sonnys in LSL last Sept. and will never go back. The place was so dirty, there was mold on the floor and walls in the ladies room! Our food was IMHO not up to Villages standards... small portions and most of the food lacked taste. In defense of the wait staff, our waitress worked her butt of and could have had some help.
I have to say that I liked the BBQ night at Malory more.
P.S. Penguin... a 72 Cutlass is my dream car!!

Taste like beauty is in the taste buds/eye of the beholder.
I have eaten at Sonny's and Oakwood and neither overly impressed me.
Of allthe restaurants in and aroud TV I find bonefish to bethe most over-rated and over-priced. However I have friends that call it their favorite
So it is probably best to kick he tiresand test drive the restaurant for yourself.

Bingo. This past summer, I was judging a KCBS sanctioned BBQ contest. While talking to another judge, he mentioned that he traveled from Dutchess County, NY to judge the event. I told him that I really liked a specific BBQ joint up there in Wingdale, NY. He couldn't believe it. He hated the place. (He was wrong, of course.)

I am not a fan of Sonny's. We have had good service there, and I never noticed a cleanliness issue. I don't care for their BBQ sauce (I do like spicy foods btw) or the rib preparation. I could only wish for Famous Dave's, but will check out the Texas Stockyards.

Penguin - While I can understand what you are saying I agree with these past 2 comments. I know what I'm getting at Sonny's when I go. The best? Not in my opinion. But it 'is what it is' and what it is isn't that bad.
And you talk about letting them occupy such a beautiful place at LSL. How about Johnny rockets? Much better location and it is NO better than Sonny's and in my opinion MUCH worse.

We had eaten at Sonny's years ago...ribs were NOT good. Then my brother and SIL wanted to eat there when we were together here in TV....we were almost assaulted by the host....very loud and very aggressive w/his "hug"- his cologne arrived 15 minutes before he did....I'm not a prude, but I don't care to come chest to chest w/a stranger. Anyway, after that was over, we were seated - the service was okay....but the food was mediocre at best....then we found Oakwood....well needless to say we know where to get good, juicy, fall-off-the-bone ribs now...very ample servings and the sides are so good (limas, black-eyed peas, macaroni & cheese for example)....that's the place for us!!! (BTW, I don't agree with the comment that if you pay only $8 for a meal, then you should expect bad food...restaurants are in business to cook and serve you good food...Just my opinion...) don't throw umm tomatoes at me now! :throwtomatoes:

Perhaps you could be more specific on what the problems were.
A dump? I always found a clean attractive restaurant.

I think the characterization of Sonny's as a dump is completely wrong. It is not a gourmet restaurant but is a good barbeque restaurant. Oakwood is tastier, I agree, but Sonny's is HERE! Good service is the norm. Good food is the norm.
No one said that you should expect bad food if you are paying $8 for a meal. They said you should not expect gourmet food nor white tablecloth service for that price. If you want that, go to Victoria & Albert's in Orlando but be prepared to spend $150 per person.

Just had to jump in the middle of this as we've visited The Villages 2xs and we've looked forward to Sonny's each time. As a frame of reference we are from the St Louis area were Pappy's rules, visit Memphis once a year and know Corky's, Rendezvous, and Interstate very well. Sonny's is good, we try not to compare. Eating out is more than just about the food for us. What we do is get there early for a late lunch/early dinner (Linner) around 2 to 3 pm, sit outside right there on the corner table top, prepare for the 2 for one, watch the world of the Villages go by, smile and enjoy the moment. Albeit only a few times, we've never had bad service, bad food, or a bad experience. Our hope is that we don't become jaded and judgmental of all the Villages has to offer if and when good fortune reigns on us and we become full time residents.

Penquin - I'm sorry about your experience at Sonny's. I agree that the Q is less than great. However, some of my friends love it and consequently I have been there several times. (good company is always more important than good food when eating out). The plus side is I've always had good service and cold beer.
Despite your first experience, you may want to give it another try. The outside bar is fun in the evenings.

We moved to TV in July 2011 and have eaten at Sonny's about 25 times. We used to eat at a BBQ chain back in Maryland called 'Famous Daves' for their wings. We found Sonny's along with Mallory CC have the best wings here, and Beef O'Bradys have the worse.
Lately at Sonny's we've been going at 1:00 for specials that kick in. I get pulled pork, french fries, corn on the cob and a large ice tea for about $6.99, I think it's great. It comes with garlic bread but I ask for a hamburger roll and make mine into a sandwich.
I've never eaten there in the evening, but at lunch time the service has always been great. They do get pretty busy. We've eaten at several of Sonny's in Florida and we have liked them all. Last August on our way to Apopka we ate at the Sonny's in Eustis, it's down Hwy 441 about 20 miles. It was lunch time and we counted 13 police cars in the parking lot. When we got inside they must of had every state trooper, Lake County cop and Eustis police from the area eating there. So the police like Sonny's too.

No doubt that Parker's BBQ is excellent - however - whenever I would drive the I-95 corridor from Silver Spring, Maryland to Florida, I would make it a point to stop at Weldon, North Carolina for Ralph's Barbeque. I considered that the best North Carolina barbeque possible. For around $9, you got the entire buffet and would come out stuffed with excellent food.
For all the non-North Carolina knowledgables, the North Carolina barbeque is 100% different from what is known as barbeque in Florida. It is not a tomato based sauce - in fact, there is NO tomato in the sauce at all. It is a vinegar and hot pepper sauce and is an acquired taste. Once you acquire the taste, it is what you will call barbeque from that point on!
I do love the ribs at Oakwood, though. I also do like the pulled pork sandwiches at Sonny's a whole lot. Great places and good prices!!

We have eaten at Sonny's a couple of times and have found the service very good and the management excellent and super friendly. I would never judge a place by the one time there as many factors go into making your time at a resturant. Was the regular manager there or some of the kitchen staff out with this flu going around? Try again in the future then if you don't like it then, you have reason.

Have never had a bad meal or bad service at Sonny's - have been in many other Sonny's - this one is the only one with a liquor bar. Sounds like your issue might be more with the server...........they do have some new ones............we prefer a lunch meal "Big Deal" sliced pork with their "Sweet" BBQ sauce.....umm good. Have been to many other BBQ restaurants & prefer Sonny's. Good luck

Nope you are not the only one. Even the salad bar was bad. There are much better restaurants that could occupy the space.

I am easy to please, like my sainted mother. I have always wondered why people who have discerning taste, IOW hard to please, are admired. It seems to me they simply choose to spend much of their life displeased. I once had a boss who seemed to relish sending his food back and refusing the wine - wonder how many "extras" he got when they brought back his food? I usually get good service, but I always kid around with the waitstaff and treat them with respect. On the rare occaision I get really bad service, I complain, but I never blame anyone specifically, and they usually make it right. Anyway, I really like Sonny's and Oakwood, and am looking forward to trying Burkes as it is very close to where we rent. BTW I am definitely not a pushover, but you usually get as good as you give. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff BUT sometimes people do not forget. Three or four years ago we went to Carraba's and got bad (yucky) service. The server actually was making fun of my husband up at the cooking area. I saw him but my hubby can not hear well and was seated away from the bad apple.
Bad dining experience. On our way out, my husband told the MGR- "We will never be back"!
Nothing happened and I want to go back but he says NO!! I know that server is probably not there anymore!

The only time I eat at Sonny's is when I sit at the outside bar (Jimmy"s) and enjoy the dry rubbed chicken wings - they are excellent. Tried the inside a couple of times and did not like the service or the food. Oakwood on the other hand is excellent IMHO

Hi, this is Joanie from Bar-B-Que Management. We're the licensed franchisee for Sonny's in The Villages. I apologize that we did not meet or exceed your expectations. I would like to find out more about your experience so that we can use it as a training opportunity to ensure appropriate corrective measures are taken. I can assure you that we truly care about each and every one of our guest's dining experience and try to always live up to the standards of excellence set by Sonny Tillman. Would you please favor me with a reply and provide me with a detailed account of your visit, including your server's name, along with the date and time, and what you ordered. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Your feedback is invaluable, and I look forward to hearing from you. bbqm@heritagemanagement.net

I've been to Sonny's a number of times since January of 2009 and been quite satisfied. I have seen them on a less then great service night but nothing to bent out of shape over.
I've had the rib sampler with three kinds and found each different and would fit different tastes but nothing "bad" that I couldn't eat. The pork 3 ways was good and the pulled pork sandwich quite good. I had corn bread that was a bit dry and heavy but there are so many ways to do corn bread who's to say it's bad?
Personally, I like the all you can eat deals and when I get seconds I often have to decline the extra sides as just too much. The Baked beans are very good.
Next few times I'll have to try the different chicken dishes.
Now, if you like pulled pork you haven't lived unless you've had Kālua pork in Hawai'i!

Hi Joanie, recently moved here, so haven't tried Sonnys yet. I would like to....however, I am very allergic to MSG. Can you tell me if any of your food uses it? Thanks, and I look forward to trying Sonnys BBQ.

It's a BBQ! I never had a bad experience, but then I got what I expected, BBQ. I have to admit that the service is better when the snowbirds aren't in TV. If you want a interesting dinning experience, try Perkins, when the air is on, and your food gets cold before it gets to your table. Mention it to the manager on duty and all you get is " the AC has a mind of its own" Not a, can I heat that up, or let me fix that,,, I don't want a freebe, just a hot meal that i'm paying for. Now Perkins and Sonnys are not on the same level. But it just goes to show you that bad meals can and do happen.. I'll go back to both of them.. but at Perkins, I'll try and stay away from the air vents.. If I go often enough and things don't change, Then I don't go again... But maybe someone else may have a good experience. I try to find at least one good thing,,, in everything. Sometimes its hard, but I really try and make an effort.. love the insights here..

Texas Stockyard in Lady Lake (in the old Silver Slipper location) is the best BBQ in the area....light years ahead of Sonny's. And, I come from the BBQ capital of the world, Memphis. Many folks here think Sonny's is good, but they don't really know what good BBQ is. JMHO!!!!

Glad to see you reading the thread Joanie!
A couple years ago I had a bad experience at Cody's, posted a thread here and the manager there read it and responded. There were no lame excuses made but a fair explanation given and a remedy put in place. It was a very poorly cooked steak on special, not a service problem. Every restaurant will occasionally have a service slip-up, as will any business. I've never been disappointed by Cody's since.
Next time I'm in Sonny's, I'll make a point of saying hi!

As anyone can tell from this message thread, you cannot please everyone all of the time. Some people say it is the best, some say it is terrible.
Go to Tripadvisor.com and you can pick out just about any restaurant, hotel, or cruiseline and you will see the same thing.
I was on a cruise a few years ago that stopped at Tallin, Estonia. Some of the older ladies (from New York?) were complaining about the walking in the historic part of the city. It was 1,000 year old cobblestone streets and they were saying it should be blacktopped so tourists could walk easier! They also said that the directional signs in St. Petersburg, Russia, should be also written in English so American tourists could read them.
No matter what, some people will complain. Personally, I believe Sonny's does a great job with a pulled pork sandwich on garlic toast. Yea, Sonny's!!

I don't understand the downhill comment. I've been there, not often mind you, since they opened and I don't see any difference. Not the best IMHO but the same as they used to be. I prefer Oakwood but every now and then I don't feel like taking the car:)

I love Oakwood. I love the cooked all day midwestern style GREEN BEANS and the sweetpotato all smushy with melted butter and the falling off the bone ribs with enough fat to make you think you shouldn't be eating this...for a second. I choose just a tad of the sweet sauce to eat with mine.
I love the sweet strong Southern iced tea.
I like the slaw.
I doubt if it will get the Mobil five star but it gets all five of mine.

Not that it makes any difference because I will never go back and will tell everyone how bad it was.
we have dined in sonnys and sometimes the ribs are great and othe times NOT as good. if you go early you get the senior special and you really can't beat the price. Not a favorite but a once in awhile type place.

McDonalds is NOT decent. They create fake food with fake flavor. You deserve better. I liked Sonny's ribs and my service was fine.

To me, Sonny's is no different than any other restaurant, be it in TV or wherever. Some people don't like the taste of their food - some do. Some people receive less-than-acceptable service on occasion - some have excellent experiences. Some people don't like BBQ - some do.
If a place even sounds remotely appealing to Sandy and I, we put it on our list and give it a try at some point. Maybe we'll like it, maybe we won't. But it's at least worth giving it a chance......or two. We'll never know without trying it ourselves. And if something's out of whack when we're there, we'll bring it to someone's attention before we leave. And if something stands out to us as being excellent, we'll let somebody know that, too. Otherwise, how would they know how we feel?
But that's just us....... :pepper2:

I so agree about places having a bad nite,, however my money never has a bad nite,,, just do what your paid to do,,, I never say one word about the quality of food or service it is not my place for them to instruct a person how to achieve what i am paying for! If you cant provide what the customer is paying for believe me,, your bottom line will indicate you have problems,,,,NOW FIGURE IT OUT! this is a chain restaurant,, the management knows what is going on,, so the numbers must be good,,, why change if we are making money regardless of the quality of the product,,,, I will NEVER eat at this sonny's again!!!!

This is not Southern type barbeque and that is why a lot of their sites fail. IMHO it is not barbecue. They do well in small communities that have few choices for eating places. They have failed in bigger citites where people know the difference and have choices. They failed in Columbus, Ga. in a very few months.

While I think that Sonny's is typically marginal at best ...... Sonny Tillman founded his chain of restaurants in Gainesville, Fl in the late 60's ...... not sure how it could be more "Southern" than that.
BBQ varies (sometimes wildly) within a very small geographic area. Carolina bbq is different than Memphis and Alabama is different than both of them ..... yet all of them are within the "south"

Never had a problem with the food at Sonny's in LSL. I move between the pulled pork, ribs and chicken. My wife likes the sliced brisket.
As to the service I had a one problem. I was seated in the bar area and the bartender was also the server. She was busy at the bar and kind of ignored us. Bothered my wife but not me because I was watching the sports on the TV and enjoying the conversation with my wife.
Lunch special is a great buy. Meat plus two sides. We always get the baked potato to go and my wife has a salad and we share my fries.
You cannot beat the price.
And I come all the way from the northern end of TV to enjoy the repast.

We've always enjoyed Sonny's at any location. It's one of those establishments I'm really surprised when I hear of a bad review but anyone can have a bad day. I'm really shocked when I read a complaint and find the customer never expressed the problem to the manager Any decent restaurant manager or owner wants to know if somethings not right. If they don't they need to look for another career

Wow, you are hard to please with restaurants, aren't you?
You posted on June 15 that you had a bad experience at Havana.
You posted on June 23 the same message as today (7-19) that you tried Sonny's three times and disliked all three.
You posted on June 24 that you had a bad experience at O'Shea's.
You posted today the same message as on June 23 about Sonny's.
Hope you find a restaurant that you like. Try Thai Ruby for an excellent choice of Thai food. Ask for it "medium plus" spice or it will be kind of bland as they have it that way for the older tastebuds around here.

None of the Sonny's scattered around Florida and Georgia have ever impressed me as great restaurants, but have never been to one that was really bad either. I'd put it in the same category as Cracker Barrel - fairlymgood food for a reasonable price. We end up going to Sonny's here about once every couple of months, and it's pretty much the same as the other Sonny's in the chain, maybe a little better.

Good post!

Have eaten at Sonny's across the state - always good at reasonable prices. Go after 1pm & get the Big Deal - a real bargain. Always pleased with food & service.

I'm from Gainesville, the original home of Sonny's (Sonny Tillman, I think.) Hate to see them trashed here. they do a good business in many, many locations.

Guess I don't fit into the Gourmet category.
Been to Sonny's 3 or 4 times - always enjoyed their food.

When people come from all over the country their taste are different. What one person consider excellent maybe bad to another. I for one have never found chain restaurants to be something I couldn't do without.. I did like County line Barbeque, but some days were better than others which I suppose it's like that about everywhere. IMO this is why you get mixed feeling or rating about restaurant chains. people have different taste.. Probably service is the easiest to pick apart. I like tex-mex, there is certain restaurant I love the food, but hate the service, but I put up with it and tip like there is nothing wrong knowing if I complain it will get worst. So I go there when I am not in hurry.

It only takes one trip to a Sonny's anywhere to learn that lesson.

This statement would be correct even if you took the words THE VILLAGES out of it.
I love The Villages and I enjoy mediocre chain restaurants and good ones too. I love a burger and shake at McDonalds every once in awhile. I consider Too Jays a GREAT chain. I ADORE Carrabbas. I think Colonel Sanders makes yummy chicken.
I stayed at a Holiday Inn once.

It is never again for me too- didn't feel like cooking one night (just one night you ask?)and Sonny's is a walk away. What a disappointment- even the salad bar was not good. I'd rather get a sub at Sweetbay.

And don't forget Bonefish Grill, one of the better chains out there.

We love to go to Sonny's. The Big deal meal is a good value. Many good sides to choose from. Waitress and waiters are always very friendly. We have been there many times with no problem .

Sonny's has the best 'Sweet Tea' around, and it's only a buck for a big glass plus you get refills. As mentioned earlier, get there after 1pm and the special is $6.99, I usually get the pulled pork, comes with 2 sides and your drink. The corn on the cob is very good and the baked beans or cole slaw aren't bad. The pork is served on the plate with garlic bread, I just tell them to give me a hamburger bun instead and I make a sandwich out of it. To me, the real flavor is the BBQ sauce, and Sonny's is really good. I've been to Burke's twice, and their BBQ sauce pours like water and has no flavor. At Sonny's I've never been disappointed and for $7 you can't beat it. They also have great Buffalo Wings, we get like 20 for $11.99 and that will serve two of us.

Penguin, I personally agree with your assessment of the place. Remember, however, everyone's perception of good service and quality food differs greatly. IMO if Sonny's had not opened an outdoor bar, they would have been out of business by now. We have tried it several times with experiences similiar to yours and like you, we concluded that there are better places to spend our money, particularly since there are so many good BBQ establishment throughout TV's.

Your absolutely right. Everyones opinion about their individual dining experience varies quite a bit. Some like their food a certain way and that's ok because its their preference. I'm still of the opinion like you and believe there are MUCH better places to spend my time and money. After visiting a great number of really good restaurants in the Villages, I was surprised that Sonny's was so substandard to me. All is good cause now I've taken a liking to the ribs at Codys. Oh no, now I am probably starting more #$%^!
