We are wondering if we should apply apoxy or some other 'product' to our lanai floor after we build? if so, any recommendations out there? I know Lowes & home depot set apoxy type products you can put down on your garage floors and we were thinking of applying that to the lanai floor - but my husband was concerned that the lanai concrete would be too rough/bumpy to apply the apoxy (different type of finish than a garage floor). Would love some 'reasonable' ideas and thanks so much

We have Chattahoochee River Rock on our lanai and love it. No puddles when it rains, not slippery, and looks fantastic.

If you decide to do an epoxy project yourself, I would strongly recommend NOT purchasing the material from a big box store. The paint stores provide a superior product for sure, and can advise you on prep, application, etc. The paint companies create a cheaper line of paint for the big box stores, and that is reflected in the results.

I agree except the Rustolium products R very good, just need a wash with perhaps muriatic acid first.
Most of the paint store R now competitive $$ with the boxes like HD

The epoxy product for the garage will stick to the lanai better than the garage; however, it will fade quickly with the sun on it. Use the product designed for lanai surfaces.

Mine is stained with a tile pattern, very nice. Amy Newsome did that and the garage floor.

When we were in the build stage of our home, we had the "decking" applied when we designed our home. This is a type of epoxy that looks like the knockdown finish on ceilings. Very durable, and we are happy with it. Adds color and a smoother finish to bare concrete. Easy to clean.

Amy did our birdcage floor two years ago. We like her work. I recall Amy saying the floor needs a protective covering, but I don't remember the timing or product to use.

We used pavers to cover our bird cage and Lanai floors. There are several styles and colors available. The finished floor looks very attractive. The pavers were the 1.187" thick pavers.

Here is a website that has a lot of pictures. River Rock Flooring For Concrete Basement Floors & More - McKinnon Materials (http://www.mckinnonmaterials.com/river-rock) We had Mike from Midstate Stone install ours. Did a great job in about 2-3 hours. Call him and he'll come over for a free estimate with samples.

I like the looks of the river rock .
How do you clean it? Can you power wash it?
I'm guessing it requires very little if any maintenance .

Yes, it requires very little maintenance. But when you do clean it, you power wash it or use a stiff broom and a hose. Sweeping up is easy. The big thing I like about the river rock is the fact that it minimizes pooling of water. Even after a big rain storm, you can walk out there without puddles. The stone is semi porous and any water, to a point, drains down to the base level, like a hard sponge. Plus, it doesn't show the dirt like tile or pavers or painted floors.

Another product that the developer offers is called Kool Deck. Usually used around pools and on lanais.

I've noticed that my neighbor's cement walks and patio are dark with what I suspect is mildew or mold. If Chat. River Rock is porous, I would expect the base underneath would over a period of time be accumulate mold and mildew--much worse than the concrete walks and patio that are normally exposed to the air. Is mold and mildew a problem with Chat River Rock that has to be addressed?

I have to clean mold and mildew off some of my exposed concrete 2 or 3 times a year but I have never noticed any on the river rock. I think because the concrete has microscopic pores that allow the mold to grow but even though we say the river rock is porous, the individual pebbles are coated in the epoxy that binds them together and the epoxy is not porous.

Can you use this flooring on your driveway or is it just for lanai??

On occassion I have vacuumed, ( i have an old cleaner that I use for the garage or lanai) but mostly I just use the hose. If you really wanted to clean with a soap solution or a bleach solution you certainly could using a rag mop or or one of your own liking and then still use the hose to finish it off.

Basically this product is simply pebbles mixed into a clear epoxy, it's poured out and then troweled smooth.
So U get a clear epoxy coating with pebbles covering the concrete.
I think a cars weight may crack it, epoxy when dry is brittle like fiberglass.
I'll let others chime in that may have used it.

I have seen it in use on driveways but I do not know about it's performance. I would think if anything happened, that some of the pebbles might break free from the twisting of the tires. But you would have to ask a professional or, as you say, maybe someone who has this in their driveway could also chime in.

I have the stone on my drive for years last year I had a new 1/2 inch dressing put on it that was after 16 years of use. You can drive on it will not crack, in fact you would need a jack hamer to get it off.
It does require maintance and here is the problem on less you don't have it sealed ever 18 to 24 months that is where the problem lies or if you do try to seal it with the sealer sold at the big box stores (that was my problem) it adds at lot to a home. I have matt to my work on it he has done the work for years and his prices a very fair. I had an est of $3000 dollars from one Co for the half inch
Matt did it for $1200. Watch out for the rib off, some people think retire people have a lot of bucks
