I have been on a gluten-free diet since mid-August, and have lost 35 pounds so far. I have another 15 to go. I have tried many diets, and this one has been the most effective, and after the first two months, cravings and bad habits disappeared. Now all I have to do is grow a "butt"!

nice job, quirky3! keep up the good work. it's a good thing when folks find a 'diet' that they can adopt as a new lifestyle of eating!

Congratulations!

Where did you get this diet from? Did you read a "Gluten-free Diet" book?
Did you buy gluten-free items at the grocery store, or did you just stop eating items that contain gluten? How did you find out that you're alergic to Gluten? Did you also stop eating items like processed desserts, potatoes and corn?

You only showed one picture; where is the "before" and "after"?

Recent news report on ABC World News stated, "only 1% of the nation actually have an allergy to gluten"...I was surprised...

Good for you! Did you find it challenging to make the change to gluten-free living? Is there a website you can recommend? Do you find most restaurants offer gluten- free options?

Actually, I'm not allergic to gluten. I read the book "Wheat Belly", and then went online to search for lists of gluten-free foods. There is a web site Food facts, nutritional information, nutrition, healthy eating, diet, food allergies, ingredients - Home (http://www.foodfacts.com) where you can search for any type of food or brand of food, and they have ratings that tell you the "bad" things that are in them. It is a little too critical, but a good overall guide.

My goal was to avoid products made from wheat and refined white flour, and reduce sugar intake. That eliminated many of the fattening foods for me.

As an added benefit, I don't get acid indigestion any more. Stores like Publix carry some gluten-free foods. I do eat popcorn without additives, gluten-free pasta in small quantities with pesto and parmesan cheese. Salmon with dijon mustard, rotisserie chicken. As a treat, I eat things like home-made rice pudding.

Some restaurants label things as "gluten free" but as long as it is made from protein, veggies, rice, etc. it is a pretty safe bet.

p.s. No "before" picture. Most guys know better than to ask!

I was just teasing. But you could have shown the before picture and said: "I'm not embarrassed because that's not me anymore."

Congratulations!

I just bought the same book but haven't read it yet. I've been juicing a lot more lately and have moved to a mostly plant based diet without refined wheat and sugar and hope to lose 50 pounds this year. Results aren't in yet.

It's good to see that someone is getting good results from this diet - that will be my inspiration. Now I need to read the book.

Good luck! It seems to work, as long as I keep the portions small. I have a goal too, which keeps me on track. (A high school reunion this summer!) p.s. I also have a fruit/veggie/whey protein shake for breakfast every day.

Great! Good for you!! Have you found it hard to stay on...especially with so many social events, going out to eat etc??? THAT would be the hardest I think.

I've heard of this book.....several times in fact.....so maybe should look into it! Up north, there are two different weight-loss programs that are multi-level marketing plans that promote shakes. I'm thinking I could do my own shakes with fruit, whey etc. and get somewhat the same results and not pay the BIG bucks to do it!!

I agree - anyone could do it themselves with persistence and small portions. It is a little hard to say "no" to some things in restaurants, but it helps to have a goal and think of saying "no" as an investment in getting there sooner. The other thing that helps is finding gluten-free foods that you really love. The up-front research helps with that.

I was wondering about your goal. In the past I have heard all kinds of goals: The most common is to get ready for swim-suit season. Another common one is to look good for an up coming wedding. Also, I have witnessed people losing weight after a divorce because they plan on getting back into the dating scene. The danger is: What happens after swim-suit season is over? What happens after the wedding etc..

Therefore, the way I see it, the big challenge is to still have the weight off after 1, 2, 3, or more years, or, hopefully, for the rest of your life. I think the best chance of keeping the weight off for good is to do it for health reasons.

By the way, it's not my intention to diminish your accomplishment. I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just trying to be realistic.

What you say is absolutely true - getting there is one thing; staying there is another. My goal is to help me get there. Hopefully creating new healthy eating habits will help me stay there. (Plus I have reunions every 5 years!)

I did see that, and if I were not (1) still working full time and (2) currently living two hours away from TV, I would definitely be interested in going! Thanks for the "heads up"!
