Out-of-the box with no modifications, I believe max speed is around 13 mph give-or-take. Depending on what the dealer does to the cart (high speed gearing, etc.), speed can be higher than that.

The cart we bought from The Villages Cart Store was set at the legal limit of 19.5 MPH.

Our 2013 Yamaha gas cart was also purchased form The Villages Cart store. Our max speed is under 20 mph. We are always being passed by other golf cart drivers. Sometimes we just pull over and let them pass.

They are running the risk of being ticketed for an unregistered motor vehicle. Let's hope the idiots get ticketed before they hurt or kill someone or themselves. Golf carts are dangerous enough at 20 mph. See the articles in the POA Bulletin.

One of the salesmen at a local golf cart store told me the governor is adjusted the same as the old ones. I don't know if this is accurate or not.

What's amazing is that some golf cart drivers, following you, seem to get irritated if you're going 19.5 MPH and they have to wait to pass you while other cart traffic is coming from the other direction.

Did read those articles about golf cart accidents. One article was a grandmother making a turn and her grand kid flew out of the cart and thank goodness the little one landed head first, in a large bush. Good for him it wasn't the pavement.

Some owners just replace the original wheel and tires with larger ones and do not have the governor reset. They may get a couple mph out of this and it is enough to get them around ones that have not been changed.

I pay attention to almost any cart that passes me and a number of times I see that it is the same make as the one I am in but looking at the tires almost 90% of the time they have been replaced. Then there are those that have really been juiced and fly by and that is a whole different story.

Use you Garmin or other GPS unit to check your speed.

A couple of years ago I was stopped by SCSO on a surface street without cart lanes. His radar got me at 24 mph. He asked if I had a cart or LSV. I told him it was a cart and he gave me a warning to have the cart serviced to bring the speed down.

Question: Has anyone seen or heard first hand someone getting a ticket for going higher than 19.5. In 5 years I can honestly say I have never seen a golf cart pulled over on our trails,and cannot remember one on our streets. How about it?

The point is not the speeding, but the fact that if you have a golf cart capable of going over 20, it is legally no longer a golf cart but an unregistered vehicle voiding your insurance coverage. Larger civil penalties in the event of an accident are likely since driving a modified unregistered vehicle is negligence.

If the cart is CAPABLE of exceeding 20mph, then you have voided your insurance policy.

I agree! My understanding is that if there is an accident that involves injuries, the insurance company may want to have the golf cart examined to see if there were any modifications which would enable it to exceed 20 MPH. If so, then your golf cart is not a golf cart anymore, but a street legal vehicle and not properly registered and insured. Your insurance company would probably not be liable to pay any claims for injuries.

Tough price to pay if you wanted a faster cart to get to Happy Hour 2 minutes quicker.

While traveling north on Morse between 466 and Spanish Springs yesterday, my wife and I saw 3 vehicles pulled over by police in 3 different locations. 2 were golf carts and 1 was a car. We suspect it was for speeding, but do not know for sure.

Just the other day the SCSO had one of the remote radar trailers set up in the front yard of a home on Kingston Way in the village of Winifred. This is the short cut that is just past Palmer and takes you to behind Laurel Manor. This was a nice stretch of flat open roadway that allowed you to check your speed. And of course the GPS always will work.
