Respect for staff...

I'm just another Villager...but recently I've heard many people get angry with waiters, waitresses, or even hosts because they don't agree with the way a restaurant is managed, menu has changed, or because a coupon doesn't work on one item or another. It is not the employees fault...PLEASE have enough restraint to not swear at, or take it out on them...they do not have control of these things and certainly don't deserve to be talked to like garbage...these are human beings providing us with a service...most of them trying to raise families or get through college...show some respect please...we ALL started somewhere and should show a little gratitude, not be so "entitled." Just one's opinion for what it's worth.

You are so right. And if your service was good, tell that person. We all could use a little encouragement for what we are doing and it is good for our hearts to know that what we do is appreciated. It only takes a second.

i had the greatest waitress at Too Jays on Sunday.. I appreciated her and left her a tip to reflect her service and personality. usually it is not the servers fault if the food is delayed or yucky.. I used to be a server years and years ago ( we won't say how long ago.. haha) and the kitchen and I fought all the time when I refused to serve nasty looking plates.

That is why some restaurants don't serve Christmas dinner anymore. Our favorite restaurant told us that the diners were so RUDE to the waitstaff on Christmas last year (when the staff had to work!) that they decided to close for Christmas this year. "Mean as spit!" is how they described last year's Christmas dinner patrons. :(

I agree, It could be hard to work at a restaurant in the villages.I know I could not. Lots of talking down to the waitstaff and I think we all have seen it.Even on this site we have had dicussions and peoples bad comments.

I don't think it stops at just wait staffs. If you look around on any given day, most times you will find someone rude to others,whether it be a fellow Villager, staff, landscaper, mower, in their car, squares, store, or where ever. It isn't the vast majority but it is much larger than anywhere we have seen or been. Maybe it is because they feel they are owed now that they have worked all their lives; maybe because of where they are from; or just maybe they are ornery in their age. We have made it a game to watch how many we see acting that way. Even new guests have mentioned it although you will hear that they are sooo excited to be here......

I'l speak for myself as I never get upset with the wait staff for things tht are beyond their control such as the cook screwing up. It's not their fault as well as how is the restaurant managed. That should be taken up with management.

My son works in the service industry and I tip very well espaecially if the wait staff did an excellent job. I have never felt entitled because of my age as I know some people do.

I was standing in line at the bakery when a man walked right up to the counter to place an order. I informed him there was a line and he responded that he was a senior citizen as if he felt entitled. It didn't stop him from ordering without any consideration to the people in line. I had to restraint myself to tell him that I was a senior citizen also. Go figure......

Good post, LoriLind. My husband and I have noticed a few restaurant patrons behaving in a familiar manner and having worked as a waitress in my younger days, it's not pleasant.

If a waitress or waiter isn't extremely busy it's nice to engage in brief conversation with them other than food and let them know you see the person standing there. It's also nice, if one can afford it, to super-size the tip on occasion and not just wait for Christmas. It's very appreciated by the servers.

AMEN!!! I agree with how "some" folks here seem to have this type of disposition. I've often asked myself what these people did in their working/days/lives!!! From the people I'm meeting most were in jobs that had lots of responsibility. These folks have higher education as well. The behaviours I've seen and others (as on this thread are commenting on) are dispicable! I would have to say "no-one" is above anyone else no matter what they do in LIFE or how much money they make or have made. A relative just rode on The Villages Shuttle and stated that (I'll try to use their words)..."A southern princess got on the van and within the 1st 5 minutes had managed to tell everyone she had the largest lot in her community AND that she was traveling to south America". I'm sure just to try to impress the others, since the 'southern princess' moniker was given to her! LOL I've observed some of that as well here in T.V.---not all are from the south neither! We all put our knickers on, one leg at a time!

I do want to add however, that the percentages of really nice, kind and respectful people are higher than these negative ones. My parents used to say when people have to put someone down and not be nice and respectful to others----they're only trying to elevate poor self-esteem!! Think I would agree with that!

Well to those waitresses, golf staffers, et al take solace in that you only have to put up with these demanding people only a short time while their spouses are stuck with them 24/7. I had a guy verbally attack my wife at Sam's club because he thought she was in his way of getting a free sample. apparently he could only bully women because when I stepped forward warning him to speak to my wife respectively he ran a 5k in about a minute.

As the job market continues to improve, the waitstaff will be able to find better jobs, and TV may be left with all these fine restaurants and nobody willing to work there because of the reputation of some residents.

Restaurants could then have to resort to hiring only seniors to wait on seniors. Sounds like a great reality show.

I hope the people who treat others this way are in the minority. I deal with people every day and just commented today how amazed I am that people would talk to us the way they do. I can understand being frustrated at something, like a long wait, etc. but it amazes me that peoples action is to lash out. Do they think that will prompt better treatment from us? Personally, I never speak harshly to someone bringing me my food from behind closed doors.....

That brings up a good point. For those that want to continue to be obnoxious to wait staff, go rent the movie "Waiting". It's pretty raw but I heard pretty true too. There are scenes in the movie that remind of of the rude people here. After you see it I doubt if you will be rude to them again. What goes on behind closed doors. :smiley:

Lori, thank you so much for a wonderful post. Having been a server many moons ago and watching my daughter suffer through it today, it is nice to see someone appreciate how difficult the job is. I have never seen so many rude, abusive people as I have in TV when it comes to servers. Honestly, I would have dumped more than one plate of food on some of those folks. My daughter is much kinder and much more patient than I.
