Perhaps someone can enlighten me with an answer why the majority of Villagers simply don't use turn signals. First it is the law when changing lanes or making a turn that a driver use his turn signal. And just as important is the safety factor. I just cannot understand why a driver chooses to not signal his intention. If I didn't know better, I would assume that most autos and golf carts are not equipped with turn signals, and I don't think most drivers have a left arm missing, or the effort requires too much strength. On the positive, for many. the turn signals will be the last part of their car to wear out. I ride a bike several days each week and it is so frustrating to approach an intersection an the same time as a auto and not have a clue what that driver intends to do. Jusy today I stopped my bike and did a mioni survey at the Morse/441 circle, of the 27 autos I was able to view as they exited, only 11 signaled their intention. Some of the drivers actually exited from the inside circle lane to the outside lane on Morse cutting off those autos only making a 1/4 circle to their exit. Scary to watch such poor drivers this when they do this.

They had just that type of accident in a circle at Stillwater and Morse today about 1:00 PM. Sherif there waving his hands showing the proper way to go through the circle and turn. I could tell from his sign language the proper way to navigate the round about. Expensive lesson for one of them.:cryin2:

I would guess people have fallen into bad driving habits. They seem and I am somtimes guilty of this too, act like a turn signal is not part of the car.

It's not just Florida but all over the USA. I seldom see people using their turn in CT.

I would say that the main reason is they come from another state in the union where we all know that most people these days, no matter where they are from, do not use there turn signals.
How are they suppose to drive, use their signals and use a smart phone!
Something had to go, and that would be the turn signals.
That would be my guess.

Have to agree - it's not just The Villages - moved here from Wilmington NC and I was convinced they sold cars without turn signals there. Can't explain it, don't understand it, but sure do not like it!

As a newbie, I found the roundabouts a bit intimidating, though the sequence of arrows was pretty straightforward. However, many others may find it a bit confusing at first and I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt. After a few times around, they will get the hang of it! But not using signals is even more problematic. I am always appreciative when people on the carts use hand signals as well as it reinforces their intent! As in any state, some are good, some not so much. It isn't just here, but everywhere we travel. Relax and enjoy the ride!

Gonna have to agree with the OP. since I've been here, about 8 months now, I've never seen so many vehicles not use turn signals. My husband and I continuously say " that model must not have come with turn signals". Why is that ok? It's very inconsiderate to you fellow drivers, not to mention a tad bit dangerous. Also, when the construction trucks have trailers attached, they don't have their lights hooked up on the trailer so you can't tell which direction they are going or even of they are slowing down. It's frustrating and dangerous. In NYS, if lights weren't hooked up on a trailer, you were pulled over and ticketed. The vehicle and road rules seem too lenient here.

But the same folks who don't know where the turn signal is can readily find the horn.

Exactly! Lady blew her horn at me twice today, and not just a friendly little reminder to go, which by the way was NOT the proper thing to do. I assume she could not see the traffic going in both directions, both cars and carts, but oh well.....I wasn't about to be prodded into crossing two lanes of oncoming traffic, when a little patience made it safer for all.

As for the turn signals, it's definitely not just in TV. It's everywhere. I often see people who do use the signal, but not until they are already in the turn....what good is that? On the other hand, I don't always "believe" the signal, so I usually wait until I see a definite slow down and/or start to turn before I act on their intention.

This time of year, I'm glad I live close enough to 466 to be able to go about my business, avoiding most roundabouts. I really dislike those inside lanes that have the right of way to turn right, crossing the outside lane. Scares me!

Speaking of traffic, did anyone notice the long line of cars this afternoon on 466, lined up to turn onto Morse, headed toward Sumter Landing? Way more than I have even seen.

I think very few use them in here in Massachusetts. It really bothers me when they cut right in close right in front of me to get off the ramp at the last second.

I gave a bit of consideration to a bumper sticker that says. "Welcome back. We all missed the sound of your horn." But Sweetie said that wasn't nice.

In Ohio people only use their horns in cases of dire emergencies.

We are all different, but if you read in The Daily Sun about a woman getting out of her car and squirt gunning a car behind her................well, I hope it isn't me.

I have noticed just the opposite. It seems that many if not most people driving golf carts not only use their turn signals, but also signal with their hands and arms. I've found that the vast majority of people driving, especially in golf carts are very safe drivers. Sometimes, I think that many are overly cautious.

I agree with you. I think given the different modes of transportation, roads, cart paths, round-a-bouts and the age of some residents, people drive pretty well in TV. There will always be the exception but on the whole this place is full of good drivers.

Then there’s the other side of the coin. People forgeting to turn their signal off after making the turn. When I found myself doing that with my new cart, I had a buzzer added to my turn signal.

Seriously, only each person that doesn't signal can answer why they don't, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for any answers. The best, and probably the only thing you can do is PYA and stay out of the way (if you can) until they clear the danger zone!

Good for you. It's rare and refreshing to see a positive post about Villages drivers! I've met cars on the golf cart path, I've seen cars going the wrong way in roundabouts, and it's common to see pre-teens driving golf carts. But perhaps they're the minority. It's nice to see someone looking on the bright side.

Well, we are a community of close to 100,000 people and that doesn't include the people visiting the Villages to shop, go to restaurants and whatever else. It would be very surprising if we didn't have some incidents.

I've never seen anyone going the wrong way at a round about, but I can envision that happening to someone from the UK or some other place where they drive on the left. Also most states in this country don't have roundabouts so I can understand some people's confusion.

As far as cars on cart paths, I almost did that once myself. We used the golf cart for about 90% of our transport ion. One day I had to use the car for something and stopped at Publix on the way home. I must have been on automatic pilot because I found myself taking the golf cart route home. I didn't realize my mistake until I saw the barrier at the end of the golf cart path in front of me.

I have seen some younger people driving golf carts, but I wouldn't say that it's common. You also have to remember that the age to legally drive a golf cart is 14. Some kids at 14 look like they are about 8. I saw the Neighborhood Watch pull over a very young looking 24 year old because they thought she might be under age. Ever notice that as we get older, everyone else looks younger.
But I agree that kids under 14 should be driving golf carts around the Villages. I even think that 14 is much too young. We are expected to abide by the rules of the road when we are on the streets. How cab we expect someone who does not have a license and has never studied the rules of the road to abide by those very laws?

After reading this thread I decided to notice whether folks are using their signals. You know there are those who don't?? On 466a today, I saw young folks (probably workers or citizens from Fruitland Park, Leesburg or Wildwood) not using theirs. I also observed a woman tentatively approach a roundabout...once in it actually stopped while I motioned she needed to keep going. Also you will notice there's A LOT more traffic now that the "birds" and renters are here...many of them are new, don't know the area so you may see quite a bit of weird driving. We actually have that all year round...it's just more obvious with more people out and about. We just need to drive defensively!

Gracie, your bumper sticker idea reminded me of one that I actually saw on a car once. It said: "Horn broke. Watch for finger!"

It was on an older 80s model Cadillac parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot. I was tempted to wait & see who the owner was, but didn't have the time. It would have been a hoot to find out it belonged to a senior adult.

To the poster who gave a little praise to golf cart drivers. If you want to have a laugh and still applaud golf cart drivers, I suggest you go the the Villages.org web site and watch some of the goofiest cart drivers (caught on camera) slam into the Delmar gate arm.

A good idea for a bumper sticker. I have been driving over 40 years and only get honked at in Jan,Feb, and Mar. in TV. Three times already this month. NO, I am not a bad driver. It seems a seasonal thing. LOL. Squirt guns sound like a good idea to me.
